Four different internationally recognized maritime regulatory agencies: RINA, Germaischer Lloyd from Germany, Lloyd s Register Quality Assurance from North America, and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in the UK, issued certifications to the company in recognition of Carnival s commitment to preserving and protecting the environment. Celebrity Cruises President Named ASTA s Allied Member of the Year Celebrity Cruises president, Dan Hanrahan, was honored by the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) during the opening ceremonies of ASTA s The Trade Show. Hanrahan was recognized as Allied Member of the Year for his significant contributions to both the domestic and international travel industry community. Dry Dock Brings More Magic to the Disney Wonder Following two weeks of dry dock this month, the Disney Wonder will provide more options for the whole family. These enhancements include modifications to each pool, the addition of an Oceaneer Lab, a computer simulator allowing children to experience steering the Wonder, as well as poolside movies on a new LCD screen adjacent to the family pool area. Hon Promoted to Director, Reservations Planning and Administration for HAL Holland America Line (HAL) has promoted Robert Hon to director, reservations planning and administration. He will report to Brendan Vierra, vice president, guest programs, and help Vierra establish the future direction for the department, including account and group services and reservations development. NCL to Build up to Three New Third Generation Freestyle Cruising Ships; New Brand Identity Launched NCL Corporation Ltd. entered into a contract with Aker Yards S.A. last month to build up to three new cruise ships, totaling 12,600 berths for delivery between 2009 and The contract price, comprising two firm ships and one option, is approximately $2.8 billion at the current exchange rate. NCL has unveiled a new, allencompassing brand identity created expressly to capture and articulate the company s unique Freestyle Cruising. The marketing plan features a new Web site, as well as a multi-faceted advertising campaign.

This service will provide the earliest cruise documents available to passengers. Princess etickets gives passengers 24 hours/7days a week access to print out their cruise details and boarding passes. Royal Caribbean Purchases Pullmantur S.A. Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCCL) has signed an agreement to purchase Pullmantur S.A., a Madrid-based cruise and tour operator. This acquisition will further expand RCCL s European and Latin American operations, and is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of SeaDream Earns Condé Nast Reader s Approval In the just released Condé Nast Traveler Cruise Poll for 2006, SeaDream s SeaDream II scored a perfect 100 in Dining and Service. SeaDream I, scored only marginally lower in these two important ratings. It s all about focus and spirit, says Larry Pimentel, president & chief executive officer, adding that it is, not bad for a little operation like ours. Silversea Cruises Offers New e-brochure in 5 Languages Silversea Cruises is now offering its corporate and incentive travel e-brochure in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. The full color brochure can be easily navigated online or downloaded from the Charters and Incentives section of Pre-Book Windstar Shore Excursions Online Guests sailing with Windstar Cruises may now book shore excursions online prior to leaving home. Since these trips are a large part of cruising, over 200 diverse shore excursions have been carefully chosen and vetted for selection. Associate Member News Amadeus Recognized for its Leading Role in the Travel and Tourism Industry At the 2006 World Travel Awards ceremony held on September 20 th, Amadeus won two prestigious awards. For the third consecutive year, Amadeus won the World s Leading Internet Booking Engine Technology Partner. Additionally, Amadeus won the award for the World s Leading CRS/GDS System. Fidelio Cruise Stays Busy in has proven to be a very busy year for Fidelio Cruise with 10 new vessels now installed with the Fidelio Cruise Ship s Property Management System (FC SPMS). Vessels include Pullmantur s Sky Wonder and Blue Moon and Norwegian Cruise Line s Pride of Hawaii, to name a few. In addition, other systems such as Fidelio Cruise Materials Management System (FCMMS), Silverwhere Dining System and FC Fleet Management System have all been rolled out on board various ships this year. Gard Acquires Control of New York Operations Gard has purchased the shares in Trimar Defense Services, Inc., (Trimar) which will now be a fully owned subsidiary and be renamed Gard (North America) Inc. According to Claes Isacson, chief executive officer of Gard, this purchase enables Gard to further build, the business in order to continue to deliver the highest levels of service, to its customers. Hamworthy Adds Desalination Specialist to its Portfolio Hamworthy has acquired Serck Como GmbH, a market leader in desalination plants for cruise ships. Through this acquisition, Hamworthy gains improved access to the German market, and is in a better position to capitalize on the growth of the cruise sector. Maine Port Authority to Develop a Bar Harbor Destination Management Plan Maine Port Authority recently contracted with Bermello-Ajamil & Partners for development of a destination management plan for the town of Bar Harbor, Maine. The project team will provide an analysis of Bar Harbor s existing cruise industry conditions and growth potential. Goals of the plan include: on-site conditions and local traffic-activity analysis related to cruise operations; regional cruise industry market study; cruise operations assessment and strategic recommendations; environmental review; and economic benefits and cruise satisfaction benchmarking.

Industry News Port Canaveral Wins Award of Merit from AAPA While in the process of revealing its Smooth Sailing All the Way branding awareness campaign, Port Canaveral won an Award of Merit from the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) for the television commercial produced for this campaign. The commercial was one of 184 entries from 40 ports, and is part of Port Canaveral s efforts to spread awareness of its customer-friendly, hassle-free and pleasurable atmosphere for leisure and business. Port of Baltimore Displays Security Upgrades U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner W. Ralph Basham and Brooks Royster, executive director of the Maryland Ports Administration, announced last month the deployment of a mobile radiation portal monitor device, only the sixth such device deployed at a U.S. seaport, at the Port of Baltimore. This technology is able to detect dangerous radiological devices or materials that might be smuggled into the U.S. via sea, land or rail. Scotsman Ice Systems Recognized at Western Foodservice & Hospitality Expo This year the Western Foodservice & Hospitality Expo offered over 135 of the newest and most innovative products introduced into the marketplace this year. After 1,400 attendees cast their votes for their favorite new products, Scotsman Ice Systems energy efficient and self-monitoring cube ice machine won the Best Equipment Award. SeaMobile Partners with HAL SeaMobile has signed an agreement with Holland America Line (HAL) to provide wireless cellular phone and PDA services for HAL guests throughout the world. Installation of wireless broadband communications equipment will begin onboard Holland America s entire fleet this year. Congress Votes to Delay Passport Implementation Deadline On September 29, the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate approved the Homeland Security Appropriations bill, which included a provision delaying the implementation date for cruise and land borders to as late as June 1, 2009, under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. The prior deadline for cruise travel was Jan. 8, This provision also calls for the development of an economical alternative to the passport called a PASScard for travelers entering the United States by sea or land. The extended date gives the Departments of State and Homeland Security time to develop the PASScard and the necessary technological infrastructure. Should the government meet the standards set forth by the provision, the deadline will be accelerated. President Bush signed the bill into law on October 5, The cruise industry applauds Congress efforts to increase security at our borders, but to do so reasonably, said Michael Crye, ICCL president. We will continue to work with the government to raise awareness of the requirements and encourage the traveling public to secure proper identification. Compromise to be Presented at IMO on Athens Convention In a major boost to ratification of the 2002 Athens Convention, the ICCL, with the International Chamber of Shipping and the governments of the United Kingdom and Norway, authored a paper providing a compromise on the amounts of liability that a shipowner could be exposed to for an incident. The question of liability in the event of a terrorist act on a passenger ship has stalled the ratification of the 2002 Athens Convention protocols. The compromise solution paper submitted to the IMO Legal Committee would limit the liability of cruise ship operators to $500 million. This would allow for traditional P&I insurance to provide certificates of insurance for nonwar risk liabilities and a new insurer to provide certificates of insurance (up to $500 million in coverage) for war risks. The paper will be discussed at the October IMO Legal Committee meeting and the ICCL is hopeful that the compromise will be approved.
