4 The project develops a Motorway of theserain thesouth Atlanctic European fachade linking the ports of Algeciras, Vigo, Saint Nazaire y Le Havre. It s coverage falls under the priority no. 21 of the TEN-T Guidelines: Motorway of Western Europe Acciona Trasmediterránea and their partners have submited this proposal to the French Spanish joined tender for MoS in the Atlantic.

5 History The route Vigo Saint Nazaire exists already for 20 years and was mainly a service for finished cars and also car components supported by PSA. When Trasmediterránea took over the operation in 2005 with two RORO ships the intention was to grow trailer traffic. Since the Spanish and French authorities started the preparation of the tender in 2006 to launch a Motorway of the Sea in the Atlantic we have focused on such project. Starting January 2007 the service capacity was increased 80% deploying bigger vessels, increasing speed and number of sailings (4 weekly departures from each port). Commercial promotion was then started to attract third party cargo from Galicia, North of Portugal and France. Growth of 38% in 2007 and further 10% forecasted for 2008 Still, the high volume demand from the tender required to extend the service to new ports and the inclusion of Algeciras and Le Havre came into place.

7 The Service Starting with two vessels, the plan is to deploy 5 vessels over a period of 5 years. The capacity of the Motorway would reach the trailer per year.

Al routes from Vigo result in less transit time. Road route from Algeciras to northern Europe normally implies the driver needs to spend his weekely rest away from his base. Unacompanied multimodal transport has proved a better return on the utilization of the resources: tractors, semitrailers and drivers. The cost of the multimodal alternative can be as low as 20% less than the road only mode.

13 Conclusions is an ambitious proposal with it s feet on the water : Operating from Vigo since 2005 Backed by a company Trasmediterranea with a long history (91 years) in the maritime business part of the ACCIONA a top industrial group whose mission is the leadership in sustainable development The service would benefit from competition. The higher the number of services the región the bigger options for the transport companies and higher the dispostion to change into multimodal. Backing this projects, the Spanish and French administration will fullfill thre key the objetives of TEN-T: Reduce external costs Avoid the geographical bottleneck of the Pyrenees Increase cohesion of the peripheral regions
