3 CMCS Chowder Chatter October, 2017 Page 3 Commodore Sandy Canning Ahoy sailors, As I write this, I am sweating, still without power after Hurricane Irma. I m sure that we are all very happy to have dodged that bullet and the 9-10 storm surge predicted did not materialize, due to a more Eastward track. Hopefully, everyone has recovered and things are back to somewhat of a normal routine. The only CMCS activity that occurred since last month was the Gypsies in Paradise Cruise to Naples, which was a fun time with great margarita s! The South Seas Kayusa Cup regatta and cruise were canceled due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Irma. The last Board of Director s meeting was one in which a proposed 2018 budget was developed and dues set for next year. A little history first, before launching into what was accomplished: In 2011 CMCS had approximately four times the annual operating budget in its bank accounts. It was decided at that time that, as a 501C(7) Club, best practices were to reduce the reserve to two times the annual operating budget. To do that, dues were reduced and some activities were subsidized to allow our membership to enjoy the excess. We have been enjoying those activities for several years now and just this year achieved a reduction to that two times level. We have also had a reduction of membership numbers since 2011, accelerating the reduction. That brings us to the Board meeting Sept. 18, where the Board had to make some big decisions on what action to take. We can not continue to operate at a deficit. The options discussed at the Board meeting were to cut some of the Club s programs to reduce expenses, raise dues enough to maintain all of our great programs, and ways to find cost savings. Already this year, anticipating this financial situation, we have cleaned out our storage unit and moved to a smaller, less expensive unit. Our Commodore s Message Racing Commodore, James Gallagher, kindly offered the use of his conference room for Board meetings next year at a zero cost. So, the good news is, it was decided by the Board that with a nominal dues increase, $20 a year for General membership and $10 a year for Crew membership, we are going to be able to keep all of the great events and parties our membership has come to expect. That s less than the cost of 5 cups of Starbucks spread over the full year! And we are making plans for some new, fun activities too. Things like actually MARCHING (you know, as in the M in CMCS!) in the Cape Coral night parade. Your dues allow us to continue to operate. We have to pay for our meeting room, activity rooms and insurance. While hearing something is going to cost more is never good, I hope everyone can appreciate that the Board and I want this Club to continue to be fun and a group you want to belong to and it is still a bargain. RENEWAL LINK The 52 nd Summerset is just around the corner and it will be going off as planned! So far, we have received very few entries, so please, do not wait until the last minute to put your entry in. October 1 is the deadline and it s approaching very quickly. We definitely need to be better at planning ahead to allow our event organizers to do their jobs well. It s difficult to plan on how many people will attend, and we need to give our venues numbers of people for dinners, racing, cruising, etc. The Halloween Cruise is coming up also on October 27-29, so make sure to sign up early. In November the Thanksgiving Dinner at Cabbage Key has limited seating, so get those reservations in early! Fair winds and following seas Sandy Canning Commodore

4 CMCS Chowder Chatter October, 2017 Page 4 Vice Commodore of Summerset Report Vice Commodore of Summerset Allen Fiske Well, tonight is the official kickoff of this years 52 nd Annual Summerset Regatta. It should be a fun night with a Commemorative Cake, a Contest to see who has the oldest Summerset T-shirt and an appearance by Steve and Doris Colgate, founders of Offshore Sailing School, our longest running Platinum Sponsor. All three of our venues, Bonita Bills, The Original Shrimp Dock (formerly Bootleggers) at Salty Sam's Marina and the Ballroom at the Diamond Head Resort are in readiness. The event t- shirts are getting ready to be printed. The custom boat bags are in the process of getting printed. The invitations to the Saturday Night Cocktail Party are in the mail. To date we have raised more than $15,000 in Cash and In-Kind Sponsorships and are hoping beyond hope that we can still get a great turnout of Competitors. We realize that many boats in Naples and Marco Island sustained damage in Hurricane Irma but are hoping that some can still make it. Boats from Punta Gorda and North weren't as affected. Our local boats fared pretty well. By the time you see this, our event will be history. We will be extremely thankful that we can once again support Youth Sailing here on the West Coast of Florida. Allan Fiske Vice Commodore of Summerset FORT MYERS BOAT SHOW Fort Myers Boat Show Mark your calendars! Nov pm CMCS always has a booth. Our presence at the boat show gets our club in the eye of the boating community. We need club members to be in the booth. Here s how it works: One to four of our club members are present in the booth for a twohour time slot to talk to show attendees. Slots fill up fast because this is really an easy gig! You get free admission to the boat show in exchange for the really tough duty of having to talk to enthusiastic boaters about boating. How cool is that? 5 CMCS Chowder Chatter October, 2017 Page 5 Rear Commodore of Cruising Report Rear Commodore Cruising Theresa Roake I hope this finds all of you recovered from Hurricane Irma. We were very fortunate and our home and sailboat weathered the storm well. My heart goes out to all who suffered. We are still in Illinois after evacuating the evening before the storm. Shelters were pretty much at capacity so we put our generator fuel in the back of the truck and just headed north. We re looking forward to coming home and putting everything back together again next week. Rear Commodore of Cruising Report -bage Key per the restaurant s request. Thank you again to Cathy and Bob Friedel for hosting such a fun cruise over Labor Day at the Naples Boat Club. There were margaritas at the tiki bar, in the pool and in the beautiful club house. Bob just kept em coming all weekend! Good food, long strolls, and great conversations made for a wonderful time. That s all for now. Hope to see you out on the water. Theresa Roake Rear Commodore Cruising s/v Lionheart As a result of the storm, we had to cancel the South Seas Cruise which was to take place September I am happy to report that South Seas suffered minimal damage and they were able to reopen September 20 th. This cruise will not be rescheduled as we are going to the same destination for Halloween. Julie and Barry Long will be your hosts for the Halloween Cruise. Please make your reservations directly with South Seas and let Julie and Barry know you are coming so they can plan accordingly. Don t forget spooky decorations for your boat and candy for the trick or treaters. Lionheart had 60 kids come by for treats last year. Better treats that tricks! There s more fun coming up. After Halloween, it s almost time for Thanksgiving. Susan and John Reekie will be your hosts at Pelican Bay from November Dinner on Thanksgiving Day will be at Cabbage Key. They do a lovely turkey dinner with all the fixings. 6 CMCS Chowder Chatter October, 2017 Page 6 Membership and Recruitment Membership and Recruitment Chairperson Bev Duff AHOY CMCS members! Yes, FALL IS HERE! OK, it still may be hot but then the morning air is a little crisper & there are falling leaves everywhere. Forget that they are from trees felled by Hurricane Irma. Summerset Regatta season is in full force and we encourage everyone to participate in this, CMCS s biggest event of the year. Boats from all over SW Florida will be participating in racing and cruising our beautiful area. Welcome aboard to new members Hugh & Deborah Marlor their boat Simplicity, a Beneteau 38. They live aboard at Legacy Harbour Marina in Fort Myers. They eager to participate in CMCS activities. Also welcoming back Seaby Bess, Betti Garcia. Her boat is Bethi Too a Dehler Sprinta Sport. They are looking forward to participating in all activities of CMCS. Fall is also the kick-off time for Annual Renewals for CMCS. Dues notices are going out via the Chowder Chatter, the mail and available online at the CMCS web site. As Fleet Recruiter, I encourage everyone, no matter how long you ve been member, to please complete the Renewal applications. Members can pay online via Pay Pal or the traditional way of a check... You will note there is a dues cost increase this year to $ for renewals ~ it was a difficult decision for the Board, however, to continue to offer all the FREE services to membership only functions, it is a necessary cost evil. So much is provided to our members and we want to continue that culture. The deadline for dues renewal is December 1 st so that everyone can make the Annual Calendar. Membership and Recruitment The cost for a new Full/ Boat membership is $ which includes the CMCS Burgee Thank you, all members, for wearing your CMCS name tags to the meetings and other functions. It is so helpful for us to get to know one another! If you need a new name tag, please advice so we can have one ready for you at our next meeting in October following the Summerset Regatta. The best way to get to know others in the club is to attend the functions we offer throughout the year! Now that fall has arrived (I know you can t tell by the temps yet) CMCS activities really are kicking back into gear with the Summerset Festivities. Check the Chowder Chatter for the details. Look forward to seeing the CMCS burgees flying from your boats! Fair Winds, Bev Duff, Fleet Recruiter Link for RENEWAL Only!
