2 IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS READ AND FOLLOW ALL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS! SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS AND DELIVER TO OWNER AFTER INSTALLATION To reduce the risk of death, personal injury or property damage from fire, electric shock, falling parts, cuts/abrasions, and other hazards please read all warnings and instructions included with and on the fixture box and all fixture labels. Before installing, servicing, or performing routine maintenance upon this equipment, follow these general precautions. Installation and service of luminaires should be performed by a qualified licensed electrician. Maintenance of the luminaires should be performed by person(s) familiar with the luminaires construction and operation and any hazards involved. Regular fixture maintenance programs are recommended. It will occasionally be necessary to clean the outside of the refractor/lens. Frequency of cleaning will depend on ambient dirt level and minimum light output which is acceptable to user. Refractor/lens should be washed in a solution of warm water and any mild, non-abrasive household detergent, rinsed with clean water and wiped dry. Should optical assembly become dirty on the inside, wipe refractor/lens and clean in above manner, replacing damaged gaskets as necessary. DO NOT INSTALL DAMAGED PRODUCT! This luminaire has been properly packed so that no parts should have been damaged during transit. Inspect to confirm. Any part damaged or broken during or after assembly should be replaced. If the lamp is marked (Hg) it contains Mercury. Follow all disposal laws. See These instructions do not purport to cover all details or variations in equipment nor to provide every possible contingency to meet in connection with installation, operation, or maintenance. Should further information be desired or should particular problems arise which are not covered sufficiently for the purchaser s or owner s purposes, this matter should be referred to Acuity Brands Lighting, Inc. 3 WARNING Read the entire installation manual, along with the following warnings, prior to proceeding with the installation of the unit. Please contact an Acuity Brands Lighting Inc. representative with regards to the use of materials or methods, which are not specified in this manual, or authorized by Sunoptics. Acuity Brands Lighting Inc. (seller) assumes no responsibility or obligation whatsoever for the failure of an installer, contractor, architect or building owner to comply with all applicable laws, ordinances, building codes, electrical codes, energy codes, fire and safety codes and requirements, roof warranties and adequate safety precautions. The installation of the LightFlex should be done by at least 2 people. The second person should be close enough to come to your aid, if necessary. DO NOT place the Tubes or Angles, with their protective layers on, out in direct sunlight for more than an hour. By doing so, will make removing the protective layer difficult. Store the Tubes, or Angles in a closed, or shaded area, until the time for installation. INSTALLATION TO BE DONE AT YOUR OWN RISK! GENERAL SAFETY Acuity Brands Lighting product installations may be dangerous and include the potential for death, personal injury and property damage. Some of the hazardous conditions include, but are not limited to, the following: The reflective tubes supplied with the LightFlex may focus sunlight and cause an intense heat, or fire. Only remove the protective film after the parts have been installed. Installation will require working at dangerous heights. When working on ladders, scaffolding, on roofs and in attic spaces, use extreme caution to minimize risks, property damage, personal injury, or death. Use the following procedures, as well as other measures, as examples to reducing risk: Clearing the area(s) below the working space or objects, animals and people. Use proper footwear. Using footwear with excellent traction is recommended. Avoid working on slippery, or wet, surfaces. Supports such as ladders and scaffolding should be well supported and strong. Install the product during calm and dry weather. When working in attic spaces, use the following precautions: Most attic spaces are dark, so use portable lighting such as flashlights to properly light the working area. Always support your weight on structurally sound framing. Do not step on the drywall material because drywall is not designed to carry a person s weight. It is recommended to use respirators, or masks, to avoid lung irritation. Use basic safety procedures when working with electric tools. Use suitable eye protection, such as safety goggles, and clear the work area of electrical wires, gas pipes, water pipes and other obstacles to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock and personal injury. The Sunoptics LightFlex is not designed to support the weight of a person, tools or other materials. If the product is damaged, do not continue with the installation and immediately contact your local Sunoptics representative for instructions and replacement parts. ELECTRICAL POWER AND COMPONENTS Switch off power at a service panel during the installation, or servicing of, the unit. Be sure to lock the service panel to prevent power from becoming switched on accidentally. ROOFING If the Sunoptics LightFlex unit must be removed from the roof, due to re-roofing, please contact your Sunoptics representative for information on disassembly and care of the unit.

5 SYSTEM INSTALLATION TIPS The Sunoptics LightFlex may be installed in various roof types. The LightFlex may be installed in Suspended Ceilings using T-Bar framing. For further information, or questions, with regards to installation, please contact your Sunoptics representative for additional information. Review the affects of installation on the structure. DO NOT install the product if it has been determined that there will be weakening or damage to the building structure or waterproofing properties. Allow ample time, approximately 2-3 hours for the installation, particularly if this is your first installation. Estimate the best positions for a single, or several LightFlex units. Be aware of the following conditions. Tall obstructions inside the room, which may shade the desired area that will be lit. Roof areas that contain obstructions such as fire sprinklers. HVAC equipment, air ducts or flues. Gas, water or drainage pipes. Roof locations that may be shaded by trees, ridges, chimneys. Avoid a location near water channels or valleys. During the day, turn off all the lights in the room to see how much natural light comes in through the windows, and determine the best position for the LightFlex system. To light a specific area, place the system over the area, not in the center of the room. This will prevent the desired area from being shaded by tall objects in the room. Measure the distance between the room and the ceiling. If you don t have enough tubing, contact your Sunoptics representative for additional tubes. Clean any surface that will need either an adhesive, seal or tape with a soft cloth to clear any excessive dust. It is recommended that these items be applied at a minimum of 70 F (21 C) for maximum performance. For structural integrity, do not rely on the foil tape. Use the supplied fasteners for tube, angle, and extension tube joints.
6 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS INSTALLATION OF THE ROOFTOP ASSEMBLY. 1. Prior to installation, an opening in a flat roof must be made. The diameter of the roof opening should be made to a minimum of 21-1/2 (546.1 mm) to a maximum of 24-3/4 (628.7 mm) in diameter. a. Contact a Sunoptics representative if your roof is not flat. Custom Curbs may be available. ROOF OPENING CURB 2. Assemble the Curb Transition to the 18 inch round. The tab openings should be positioned at the top.
