1 Summer Arts Camp 2019 Junior Counselor Information Purpose: The position of Junior Counselor has been created as a way of introducing tweens into the experience of being part of the workforce.

1 1 Summer Arts Camp 2019 Junior Counselor Information Purpose: The position of Junior Counselor has been created as a way of introducing tweens into the experience of being part of the workforce. The intention of this opportunity is to begin to train students on how to apply and interview for positions, how to follow directions, deal with co-workers, trouble-shoot problems, and how to lead in an effort to help students become successful citizens. Requirements: The Junior Counselor position is open to students who are thirteen (13) or fourteen (14) years of age by June A Junior Counselor must have reliable transportation to and from the Beverly Arts Center. Once a session has been assigned to an applicant, there will be no conflicts allowed and no make-up days allotted. Description of Duties: I. Junior Counselors will arrive at the Beverly Arts Center by 7:30am each morning to assist the Assistant Camp Director with Pre-Camp and setting-up for the day of camp. This may include: o Moving tables and chairs o Moving supplies from room to room. o Prepping classrooms for the day. o Laying out all camper name tags and seeing that campers put on their name-tags. o Setting-up the lunch bag collection bins. o Assisting Counselors with Curb-side drop-off. II. Junior Counselors will be assigned to a group of campers that they will travel with through camp for the entire day, assisting the counselors and Teaching Artists with the daily operation of Summer Arts Camp. This may include: o Passing out supplies in the classroom. o Cleaning paint brushes or paint cups. o Wiping off tables with paper towels and cleaner. o Sweeping the floor. o Putting supplies away. o Throwing away camp-related garbage. o Escorting campers to the bathroom and back to the classroom. o Organizing games outside during all-camp breaks. o Supervising tables at lunch and snack times to make certain campers are eating and cleaning up after themselves. o Manning the lunch-time concessions stand. o Helping the Assistant Camp Director set-up and teardown for Movie Days.

2 2 o Assisting the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director with the production of the All- Camp Showcase. III. Junior Counselors will participate in all camp workshops and will receive valuable one-on-one time with Teaching Artists, experiencing all that the campers experience, but in a leadership role, instead of the role of a camper. They will receive: o A Staff t-shirt. o A Staff Name Tag. o Recognition in the Showcase programs. o A forty percent discount on non-member camp tuition. There is no additional member discount. o Credit for community service hours (if applicable.) IV. Junior Counselors will assist the Assistant Camp Director and Counselors in the clean-up of the BAC following a day of camp. The end of their day is 4:30pm. Junior Counselors are allowed to walk or ride their bike home from the BAC if a permission slip is signed by their parent/guardian(s). This may include: o Collecting name-tags from campers. o Handing out information to parents at pick-up. o Assisting a Counselor with Curbside Pick-Up. o Putting away tables and chairs. o Organizing name tags. o Putting away supplies. o Sweeping floors. o Supervising campers until their parents arrive. V. Junior Counselors will be given the opportunity to perform in Performing Arts Showcases or show their work in Gallery Showcases at the end of each session. (This includes the opportunity to audition for roles in the Original Musical session.) To apply: As the intention of the Junior Counselor position is to teach students how to apply for a job, interview for the job, and successfully complete the job, the Junior Counselor application form must be completely filled out by the student that wishes to apply. (We will not judge hand-writing.) The application may be turned in at the front desk or scanned and submitted by the parent of the camper via to the Camp Director, Carly Bishop, at carly@beverlyartcenter.org. All lines must have an answer in order for the form to be considered complete. Four (4) Junior Counselors will be permitted per two-week session of Summer Arts Camp for a total of twenty-four (24) Junior Counselors. Students interested, must rank their choice of which session they would like to work. Only one session will be awarded to each approved applicant. If there are not enough applicants, extra sessions will be offered to approved Junior Counselors beginning in May.) All applications must be in by May 1, 2019 by 5pm. Interviews will be held beginning in May Cost:

3 3 If a student is approved to be a Junior Counselor for a session of Summer Arts Camp, the parents/guardians of that session must register and pay for the session to secure their student s spot within two weeks, or the spot will be forfeited to another applicant. What makes it special? What affect can it have on people if any? How can art make a difference in the world? 3. Why do you want to be a Junior Counselor at the Beverly Arts Center s Summer Arts Camp? What do you hope to learn or experience? What makes you the best candidate for the job?

5 Schedule: Please number the sessions in which you are interested in participating in order of importance. (One being the most important and six being the least important. If you cannot attend a session due to conflicts, please place an X next to it. Remember, once you have been assigned a session, there can be no conflicts or make-up days, so make certain your parents or guardians check their calendars! Session One: Art Attack! June 10-21, 2019 Visual Arts focus Field Trip to museum of Art Workshops in classes such as Drawing/Painting, Comic Book drawing, Print-making, Ceramics, 3-D Sculpture, and Recycled Sculpture. The session culminates with a professional gallery showing in the BAC s Atrium gallery. Session Two: Weird Science! June 24 - July 5, 2018 S.T.E.M focus Field Trip to the Museum of Science and Industry All workshops focus on finding the place where art and performing arts meet with Science. Workshops in S.T.E.M Art, Dance, Music Theory and Composition, Culinary Experiment, Fashion Design, and Weird Science. This session culminates with a live Mad Scientist s Laboratory performance in the Baffes Theatre. No classes on July 4 t.h. Session Three: Super Heroes vs. Villains! July 9-20, 2018 Calling all comic book fans to the ultimate artistic showdown. In this wild and wonderful session, campers will design their own comic book, create their ow super hero and villain, and design an epic battle while learning Martial Arts and Break Dance in workshops such as Obstacle Course, Dance Battle, Action Movie, Comic Book Art, etc. This session culminates in a performance in the Baffes Theatre. Session Four: You Can t Stop the Beat! July 22-August 2, 2019 Music and Dance focus Workshops might include: Hip Hop Dance, Step Dance, Contemporary and/or Modern Dance, Singing, Composition and Theory, while campers experience the thrill of recording in a studio, beat-boxing, and performing their creations live on stage in the Baffes Theatre on the final day of camp. Session Five: Broadway Bound! August 5-16, Theatre focus Workshops include Flapper Dance, Clowning and Improvisation, Cabaret Songs, and Adventures in Art while campers explore the glitter and glitz of the world of Vaudeville! Session Six: Weird, Wacky, Wonderful, End of Summer Extravaganza! August 19-30, 2019 Workshops include a little bit of everything: Music, Theatre, Film, Dance, and Visual Arts! The session concludes with a showcase in the Baffes Theatre. 5 Parental Consent and Payment:

6 6 I consent to allow my child to work with the Beverly Art Center Summer Arts Camp staff as a Junior Counselor. I realize my camper must be in attendance five days per week for two consecutive weeks, based on the session to which they are assigned. I will get my student to the BAC by 7:30am each day and pick them up promptly at 4:30pm. I realize that this is an opportunity for which tuition will be charged.
