This includes introducing key legislation to enumerate parks in the penal code. Such was the case with the Theft of Services bill and the recently passed Trespass bill. These key pieces of legislation allow parks to more effectively run their businesses. TACO efforts were vital in getting a later school start date passed in the Texas legislature. This extended the camping season for many parks that experienced significant increase in their end of summer business. TACO worked directly with the state comptroller to implement a set of forms to allow parks to seek refunds of utility sales tax on usage by monthly guests. Many TACO members have gotten back thousands of dollars with the largest refund check to date being $42,000! One-on-one legal counseling through your membership with TACO. The association hosts the largest industry trade show in the Southwest every spring. In the fall, the association hosts a Parks on Tour that allows park owners to visit other parks and see how their fellow park operators are handling day-to-day operations and what plans they have for the future. KEEPING IN TOUCH WITH MEMBERS The TACO office understands the challenges that face park operators today in delivering a quality experience. When park operators in Texas have a question they can always call the state office and get a response. 5 By The Numbers Federal Disaster Assistance for Texas Surpasses $1 Billion Three weeks after the federal disaster declaration, more than $1 billion in Federal Disaster Assistance for Survivors funds has been approved to help Texans recover from Hurricane Harvey. Texas Updates as of Sept. 17: 49,961 homeowners and renters were approved for more than $333.4 million in housing assistance, including essential home repairs and rental assistance. 214,038 homeowners and renters were approved for nearly $146.6 million in grants for the replacement of necessary personal property and help with serious disaster-related expenses. 86,000 policyholders received more than $347 million in payments from the National Flood Insurance Program. The U.S. Small Business Administration announced that SBA has approved $265,581,100 in low-interest disaster loans for Texas businesses and residents impacted by Hurricane Harvey. 2,919 homeowners and renters in Texas were approved for more than $245.2 million in low-interest disaster loans from the SBA. 226 Texas businesses were approved for nearly $20.3 million in low-interest disaster loans from the SBA. In addition, state and local governments were approved for $181 million in obligated Public Assistance funding to help with the costs of saving lives, protecting people and property, and clearing storm debris from roadways. State of Texas/FEMA Open 20th Disaster Recovery Center A State of Texas/FEMA Disaster Recovery Center opened today in Galveston County in the city of Dickinson. This brings to 20, the number of DRCs opened in Texas supporting Hurricane Harvey survivors. Disaster recovery centers offer in-person support to individuals and businesses in counties included in the Texas federal disaster declaration for Hurricane Harvey and the subsequent floods. The new center is at the following location: Old Amegy Bank, 2401 Termini St., Dickinson TX 77539, open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Recovery specialists from FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the state and other agencies will be at the center to talk about assistance and to help anyone who needs guidance in filing an application. 9 Rockport R-V Parks Seeing High Demand with New Clientele In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, housing is in high demand in communities left devastated by the storm. This includes contractors who are here as part of the recovery effort. As a result, Rockport R-V parks that were once the domain of tourists are now serving new clientele. R-V park owner Billy Serur, like many Rockport residents, is trying to restore a sense of normalcy to his life and his business, piece by piece. For Serur, the new demand is a welcome change. I knew the park would probably be destroyed. R-V s can t withstand that, said Billy Paul Serur You don t really know where to start you just look around, break down, it s overwhelming, said Serur. This was all of the debris that was pulled out from the R-V park. It took contractors about two and half weeks to clear the entire park. The R-V park is Serur s only source of income. He expects to be fully operational in a few weeks, but this time, it s a different sort of customer he ll be dealing with. I ve been bombarded with calls. A lot of FEMA people., a lot of contractors, people with repairs in the area, said Serur. It s not the kind of clientele he s used to dealing with but he s got a commodity they need housing. A lot of government people, contractors, adjusters, they are setting up camp here in R-V s because the volume is so much to cover, said Serur. And even though he still needs to fix some of the plumbing and the meters, he s hopeful he ll be able to offer people a new place they can call home. The R-V business is going to rebound. It s going to be good, said Serur. CAA Niagara Travel Show Huge Success! The CAA Niagara Travel Show was a huge success as TACO guides were passed out and eventually all gone within the 3hrs. It was the perfect piece of collateral for that shows demographic according to Chris Radley, Account Manager Texas Tourism.
