1 Bradley Bunn (Kara) District Governor P O Box 7848 Midland, TX bbunn@caprockoperating.com Office Home Fax Cell Important Dates: PETS, DFW Hyatt March 27 29,2009 April 30 May 3, 2009 District Conference Green Tree Country Club, Midland, TX Odometer: 10,609 Total Clubs Visited: 51 Dear Rotarians, Wow what a journey! 10,609 miles, 51 Clubs and 2,043 of the finest Rotarians in the world. The official visits are truly the best part of the District Governor s job. The opportunity to make these official visits is truly an honor and privilege and at the same time humbling because each of our 51 active clubs are making a huge difference in their communities and the world through service in Rotary. The Rotary Year is not over yet though! Another Membership Workshop is being planned in Midland for March 21 (tentative). Watch your for more details. District Conference will be held in Midland this year on April 30-May 3. The theme of the conference is ACTION and will feature Christmas in April service opportunities. A Foundation Dinner in Lubbock on May 29 featuring PRIP Frank Devlyn will be a wonderful opportunity to end this year of Making Dreams Real by honoring Paul Harris Fellows and members of the Paul Harris Society. Let s make maximum use of our foundation points to increase the number of 100% Paul Harris Clubs as we work to Make Dreams Real! Kind Rotary Regards, Bradley W. Bunn, DG Rotary International President D. K. Lee and his wife Young Ja

2 Page 2 I M DREAMING OF A BETTER, BIGGER, AND BUSIER ROTARY CLUB (Or My Impressions of the R. I. Presidential Membership Conference) By Area 1 AG Dr. Paul W. Anderson Rotary has everything younger adults are looking for to fulfill a need in their lives; it just needs to become more accessible to them, was a statement that continued to ring in my mind after attending this great event hosted by R. I. President D. K. Lee in Phoenix. To make the dream a reality of a better, bigger, and busier club doing useful hands on projects that benefit our community - takes some quality, serious, and purposeful planning. This kind of strategic planning we are going to call Visioning for the purpose of coming up with a Vision for a club. Some clubs in Minnesota that were losing membership started the Visioning process and have been doing it since Since then just about all of the clubs that experienced the Visioning process have stabilized or grown in membership. This experience is often done with a trained facilitator who guides the process. It starts with getting back to why we joined Rotary, the idea of Service Above Self, and a renewed commitment to what we stand for. A long-range plan is created that provides the framework. Without such a plan, Rotary s annual leadership turnover creates inconsistency, as new leaders come aboard with new ideas. When a plan is in place and a vision has been defined - present and future club leaders work together to move the organization forward with minimal confusion. Visioning allows the club members to dream about what the club can become. From this dream will come a new sense of identity, a renewed commitment, and the tools to make a club better in the future than it is today. Let us move our dreams to a Vision that produces clubs that are retaining members, growing in membership, and reaching some younger members. And may we wake up to the fact that we need to start new clubs, even internet clubs. They will not hurt our existing clubs and they spread Rotary. And what does Rotary do Rotary saves lives with wells, mosquito nets, polio vaccine and many other projects at home and around the world.

10 Page 10 NOV 15 IRS Reporting Requirements Informational Notice From R.I. New IRS rules, which went into effect on January 1, 2008, require each individual Rotary club to file a tax return, regardless of the amount of your club s income. In the past, only those clubs with income of $25,000 or more were required to file a tax return by November 15. THAT IS NO LONGER THE CASE. If your club s income is $25,000 or more, you will continue to file on either Form 990EZ or Form 990. The due date for these forms is November 15. A new three step form was created for those tax-exempt organizations with less than $25,000 of annual income. The new Form 990-N is an electronic form and you must complete it online. You may find the form at It is a simple three step process that you will find easy to complete and you will not need any special tax knowledge skills. This form is also due on November 15. The filing of the Form 990 or 990EZ should be prepared by an experienced accountant. You say your club doesn t have an accountant? Then consider this as an opportunity to grow your membership by inviting one of the many local accountants in your community to join in the fellowship of Rotary! The IRS penalties for not filing a timely tax return will break your treasury! It will be a long time before a District Governor of District 5730 has an Assistant Governor who is gifted with such a rare combination of humor, passion, compassion and such good old fashioned feistiness. The good Lord gave Terry red hair for a reason! Terry s dedication to serving others is an inspiration to all of us. I will forever treasure the memory of watching her sharp wit at work. She could trade stories with the best of the old guys. A special note of thanks to PDG Roger Sepulveda and DGE Jim Cole for attending Terry s funeral service. 25 Page 25 Club Corner SERVICE OPPORTUNITY Dear DG Brad and YEO Ken, The Youth Exchange program is one of the premier programs of Rotary International as it provides an opportunity for students to expand their view of the world by living outside their comfort zone. South Central Rotary Youth Exchange has offered optional summer tours for their students for well over 20 years with trips of the East and West coasts. For over 10 years, PDG Chuck and Nancy Frazier have planned those June tours including finding volunteers to be chaperons. In the past couple of years, we ve not needed any new staff members as we had sufficient repeat participation. This year, however, some of our previous chaperons have indicated that they will not be able to travel with the students so we are looking for Rotarians AND non- Rotarians (teachers, college students over 21, etc.) to fill some of the positions available for the June 2009 trips. As youth exchange students from your district may very likely be on one of the trips, we would appreciate any support you could provide by informing your district s Rotarians of the opportunity to provide service to these great students. It might be easiest to spread the word if this information would be included in a district newsletter, on a district website and/or forwarded to clubs for them to include in their announcements or newsletters. Chaperons receive paid transportation to/from the tour, double occupancy hotel accommodations with a same gender staff person, entrance to all events the students attend and a per diem to cover the cost of meals. Dates of the three trips are: West Tour A June 15 to 29, 2009 West Tour B June 12 to 26, 2009 East Tour June 18 to July 2, 2009 Applications for chaperon positions will be sent on request by contacting: PDG Chuck Frazier Box 1071 Emporia, KS PDG5710@cableone.net Thanks for your consideration!
