Joe oversees marketing communications, sales, reservations, food and beverage, customer care, Mileage Plan and Board Rooms. Joe s prior position was Vice President of Cargo. He joined Alaska Airlines in 2000 as Regional Sales Director for the state of Alaska. He has also served as Managing Director of Government Affairs in Washington, D.C., staff Vice President of the airline s Public Affairs Division, and staff Vice President of in-flight services. Sprague began his aviation career two decades ago as a Customer Service Agent at a commuter airline in Juneau. He later served as Vice President of marketing and Customer Service for a small Seattle-based airline and as Manager of Government and Industry Affairs for the Washington, D.C.- based National Air Transport Association, serving the interests of 2,000 aviation businesses. Sprague has been a corporate pilot and flight instructor. He has also taught as an adjunct instructor of airline management for the University of Anchorage, Anchorage. Alaska Airlines did you know? 4 Mike Veseth, our January speaker, sent these 5 things for us to remember! 5. Globalization has both positive and negative effects when it comes to wine. The same commercial forces that bring a world of wine to your supermarket's shelves also threatens to "dumb down" this special product. This is the curse of the Blue Nun (Blue Nun was the first global mass market wine brand.) 4. Wine today suffers from the "paradox of choice." Having so many choices makes it more difficult to choose -- this is a barrier to wine sales. 3. The miracle of Two Buck Chuck is not that they can sell wine for $2, it is that consumers will buy it. Consumers are intimidated by wine and are afraid to pay too little or to pay too much. Two Buck Chuck shows the success of wine that simplifies the paradox of choice and gives consumers confidence to make the purchase. 2. I have "grape expectations" about the future of wine because I believe in the "revenge of the terroirists." I think terroirists will successfully protect and preserve wine's soul in the face of the commercial forces that may undermine it. 1. Everyone should read my book Wine Wars so that they can learn the truth about Trader Joe's, the factor, how America is still recovering from Prohibition and why I support Wagnerians over Martians. I didn't have time to talk about any of these things at lunch and they make great reading! Passing of the torch At our January luncheon Stephanie Kang, our 2011 President, presented incoming President Chris Novosad with a plaque commemorating the occasion. Stephanie is with the Port of Seattle and Chris is with Horizon Lines in Tacoma. What a group!
