1 Friendship CONNECTIONS The Friendship Force of Oregon s Mid-Willamette Valley Club of the Year 2000 August 2007 Care for those quilts Dorothy Stewart Ambassadors to Lincoln, Nebraska in June had many fascinating experiences. One of which was when we went to the campus of the University of Nebraska to visit the International Quilt Study Center. This is the largest and most comprehensive collection of quilts in the world with more than 1,700 quilts and four major collections last valued between $8 million and $9 million. A newly constructed facility is scheduled to open this fall and will be the the world s first museum and international center dedicated to the study, preservation, and display of quilts. It will contain public galleries and meeting spaces, work areas dedicated to research, and climate controlled storage areas for the center s world-class collection. A graduate program in textile history with an emphasis in quilt studies was also created; it is the only program of its kind. (Information quoted from The Eleusis, Chi Omega Alumnae magazine.) We saw the current storage facility where each quilt is kept in a cardboad, acid-free textile storage box, labeled with a number that corresponds to to the quilt inventory. A notebook holds color photos of every quilt. Inside the boxes, quilts are tagged with their catalog numbers and placed amid acid-free tissue paper, with extra tissue stuffed in the folds to deter creases. We witnessed volunteers who remove, unfold and refold quilts every month or so for inspection and to avoid fold damage. So, if you have a treasured quilt from your family heritage, it was recommended that you store it on a bed on top or underneath the spread or blanket, rather than keep it folded up in a closet. But, if it must be kept there, periodically take it out, unfold and refold it differently so as not to permanently damage the fibers. Moscow teacher gets her hands in the dirt helping plant the Rea s flower boxes! Olga Averchinkova, biology teacher in Moscow s School 1256, accompanied the Kiwanis-sponsored student exchange this spring. The arrangement and attachment to Albany is a result of the Teachers to Russia program founded by our club. Several of our members have been involved with School Our August Gathering Sunday, 12 August 2 until 4 P.M. Annual potluck picnic at Gentle Woods Park in Monmouth. See the story and map on the back page
2 Page 2 Friendship Connections August 2007 From President Dorothy I hope everyone is having a busy and productive summer. Mine is definitely busy. Speaking of being busy, our club has a rigorous schedule ahead. (That s a good thing.) In October 2007 Jim Tolbert will be heading to Russia with another group to help Russian students practice their English skills. (Wouldn t it be nice if someone would help our youngsters practice their English skills? But that will have to wait for another day.) In early March of 2008 our club will visit Southwest Florida. In May of 2008 our club will visit Germany. In July/August of 2008 the FF group from Tuxtla- Guitierrez, Mexico will come to stay with us. In October of 2008 Northern Colorado is coming to stay with us. In 2009 we will host the Asia-Pacific Festival in June and also Southwest Florida in early March. In addition we will be ambassadors to Northern Colorado and Nara, Japan. WOW! (No wonder we were selected Club of the Year in 2000!) We re an active bunch. Which brings me to the next item: If you are asked to Dorothy Garrett assist or be an Exchange Director, PLEASE say, Yes. The members of the board are presently contacting people to fill these vital positions. If you are not contacted but would enjoy trying your hand at being an Exchange Director, please contact Kathy Butler or Dorothy Garrett. The jobs are not that hard when everyone helps. Past Exchange Directors will be glad to share ideas. Being an Exchange Director is truly an exciting and rewarding experience. Rita Powell is chairing the committee that is planning the Asia Pacific Festival. They have met several times. The theme is Wine and Roses. Keep tuned for the latest in that endeavor. At our last meeting we heard from Dave Falconer, who gave us many tips on taking good pictures. His presentation was entertaining as well as informative. Sunday, August 12 we will have our annual picnic at Gentle Woods Park in Monmouth. It is right off HWY 99W between Hoffman Road and Main St. in Monmouth. Turn on Church St. (right if coming north and left if coming south), then immediately left on the first street and follow that to the park. There is a covered picnic area. I ll see all of you funloving people there. You use it just as you would any search engine, and it is powered by Yahoo!, so you get great results. The process couldn t be easier! When you are on the web, simply type into the top line of whatever browser you are using. You will be taken to the GoodSearch home page. The first blank space asks for whatever it is you re looking for. Then, on the second line be sure to enter Friendship Force International as the charity you want to support. After that, any time you want to look up something on the internet, just type your query into your search window and you have made a contribution to FFI. Just 500 of us searching 4 times a day will raise about $7, a year! Please spread the word.
