The Monthly Review A Publication of the Alameda West Kiwanis Club December/January, 2018 Vol. 11, Issue 3 President s Corner After an incredibly busy October, the members of Alameda West Kiwanis Club took a needed rest for much of the holiday season. But rest for this club is not always the way other folks define rest. In this Issue: Bell Ringing Club Party.. 2 The Write Stuff 3 Calendar..3 Kiwanian of the Month....3 SLP News. 4 District News/Education.. 5 We traveled to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs to tailgate and attend a football game. We were happy to welcome some of our friends from the Lakewood Kiwanis Club! We packed school supplies to ready them for distribution to many of our Jeffco Schools the Write Stuff. Thanks to Dave and Annette for making this happen. Watching kids get new school supplies is so rewarding and I know we are all looking forward to that in January. Our annual holiday party was great fun and well attended. Many thanks to JoLynn and her committee for hosting. It was a great evening and, of course, the White Elephant gift exchange was the highlight of the evening. I m wondering what might appear next year? Meetings: Wednesdays: 7:00-8:00 AM Place: Garrison Street Grill Visit us on Facebook at W. 6 th Ave. Lakewood, CO 80215

Salvation Army Bell Ringing This year marked our 49 th year of ringing the bells for the Salvation Army outside of the King Soopers at Belmar. We rang remembering Wimpy Miller who was the coordinator for all but the last few years. Darl took over the coordinator job for our club in Wimpy s place. This year was mild weather which really helped. We were joined in the project by friends and Key Club members. Well done everyone!! Club Christmas Party This year s Christmas Party was held at the Green Mountain Townhouse Community building. There was a ton of food and good cheer. The annual white elephant gift exchange was again a lot of fun, and it included gifts that were actually white elephants. Any gifts that were not kept were donated to the Action Center s Beautiful Junk Sale

s * All of the bags of supplies that we filled and stored in October were revisited in December. The watermelon bins of bags were broken down into boxes to be delivered to the individual schools in preparation for meeting with the students in January. After the boxes were filled, they were transported and stored at the schools by Dave s car and the Action Center truck. Members of the different Jefferson County Kiwanis Clubs are in the process of setting times for distribution to the students at the schools. Kiwanian of the Month!! January *Jan 12 Stein - The Write Stuff Distribution *Jan 8-15 The Write Stuff Distribution *Jan 26 Betty Proctor Fund Wine Tasting *Jan 27 Action Center Food Pantry & Clothing February s*feb 27 National Pancake Day March Bob, Felix, Suzanne At the end of the year, we said goodbye to some of our long-time members: Felix, Bob, and Suzanne. We re so sorry to see them go and will really miss the impact they have on our community through the Alameda West Kiwanis Club. We wish them all the best of luck as they make the most of their skills and resources serving their community, their friends, and their families in new ways. We will miss them terribly but know that they won t forget their time with us. Nor will we forget them! *Mar 9-11 Mid-Year Conference April

Bear Creek Key Club The Bear Creek Key Club met twice in December. During the first meeting, more membership cards, pins, and booklets were presented to members who had not been present during the meeting when the majority of members received their membership materials. Planning occurred for the annual holiday party and members participated in a fun icebreaker. During the second meeting, the annual party and white elephant exchange occurred. Members enjoyed food, camaraderie and gift stealing. Some Key Clubbers signed up to ring the bell as well during the first weekend. The first meeting of the second semester will take place on January 16. Westridge K-Kids In November and December the K-Kids only met two times. In the same theme as Thanksgiving, the members made thank you cards to our local firemen for keeping us safe. After making the cards, we invited the firemen to visit us. Unfortunately, they had to cut the meeting short due to a traffic accident. To make sure the firemen received the cards and cookies, Michelle and her children visited the fire stations to say their thank you s personally.

District & International Kiwanis News Kiwanis Education Meet the Western Canada District Kiwanis began in Western Canada with the establishment of a Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba in Clubs spread to Saskatchewan and Alberta in There are eight Divisions in the District throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.
