2 Letter from the President: On behalf of the Friends of Metro Parks Board of Trustee s, we want to thank ALL of you for a great volunteer year! We recorded over 21,000 adult volunteer hours and over 1400 Teen Corps volunteer hours from June 1, 2013 to May 31, The amount of hours everyone volunteers is very humbling. Well another busy year comes to a close for Lorain County Metro Parks and for Friends. Let s break down those hours with the stats from the various parks: Ah, Halloween Fair. We were open all 6 nights with a total trail attendance of 20,809! Last year we were at 15,039. Wow, good job all! The train riders were up to 4,832 from last year s total of 4,249. The wagon rides totally rocked at 5,028 riders! Last year was 3,391 riders. Our volunteer hours for the Hay Wagon rides and the Halloween Fair were over 1900 adult hours and over 500 teen corps hours. The Halloween Fair takes a lot of time and effort both by the volunteers and the park staff. We all make a good team to make it a GREAT success! Thank you all. The Fall Wagon Rides at the equestrian center totaled 3,800 riders with 1,831 people visiting the maze. Thanks to the volunteers, staff and of course the horses! Beautiful Holiday Lights starts right on the heels of Halloween. No sooner do we dismantle the trail we are again out there setting up for the Holiday Lights. Holiday Lights saw 12,886 visitors this year. This total is down slightly from last year s 16,441 visitors. The Little Green Choo had 9,275 riders compared to last year s 11,570 riders. Our adult and teen corps volunteer hours for Holiday Lights were over 1,400 hours. Thank you all so very much for spending some of your valuable time volunteering during the busy holiday season! The Santa Shop had a good start. The Friends Board wants to give a big thank you to the volunteers who donated beautiful hand-made jewelry for the Santa Shop. It was a big hit. I want to pass along a big thank you to all of the volunteers that helped out at the Sugar Shack during Maple Sugaring again this year. You are all a very dedicated group of volunteers and I know the Park staff sincerely appreciates your hard work and dedication. Unfortunately, this year was NOT a good year for Maple syrup. The weather just did not cooperate. The staff and the volunteers served 292 people with requested programs and 2,141 in public visits. I also want to add a special thank you to the re-enactors who stood outside in the cold. I understand there will be a new addition to the group next year. Stop and visit. I had my first taste of rabbit stew this year. You also might be able to share in a taste of rabbit stew or venison. I want to send a great big thank you to all the volunteers that stuck with me and helped with the FIVE, yes FIVE pancake breakfasts during Maple Sugaring. The two weeks of both Saturday and Sunday and then the last Saturday was a lot to ask and you came through and worked! You all are awesome! Hmm, time to plan for next year Wellington had a terrific Paddle Boat season. The volunteers and staff put out 1,180 boats with 3,498 park patrons enjoying the new educational scavenger hunt on the water. The Youth Explorer Club provided 95 children with a hiking stick for an 8 week educational program. The popularity of Wellington Reservation was obvious this Spring when the Pancake Breakfast with the Easter Bunny and Egg hunt was attended with record numbers. Watch for new programs for all ages coming in the new year. 2

3 Letter from the President Cont.: If you have not visited Miller Nature Preserve I urge you to take time and see what they have to offer. Last year they had almost 17,000 visitors with over 4700 volunteer hours. The Butterfly Exhibit was open from June 27th Sept 3rd and had over 10,600 visitors. In addition, from Sept 3rd through Sept 15th the visitors totaled 613. The butterflies will be back this year. There is a new chef at Miller Nature Preserve. Be sure and stop for lunch or dinner. Check the web site for times. I am excited to say I have received a stat from Lakeview. Their Kayaking Symposium had a great day with over 600 attendees and 226 participants. In addition, I was personally at the Easter Egg Hunt this year and it was an overwhelming success. I had several visitors stop me and tell me what a well-organized event and how much fun they had. My kudos to all the volunteers and Park Staff that helped stuff, set out the eggs and be there to help the children. What a great job at the Easter Egg Hunt. Lakeview posted over 1, 250 volunteer hours this past year. If you like gardens and want to visit a peaceful and beautiful place, come to Schoepfle Gardens. The gardens are magnificent with blooms happening continually during the season all over the gardens. In addition the park features a Children s garden that includes the carousel. This year attendance for the carousel was 7,017 which is another banner year for the Carousel. The tram rides served 813 people for the public rides and 181 people for requested tours. Attendance was over 9900 people as of November I drove tram on Mother s Day and I can tell you the park was full of visitors. Matt Kocsis at Schoepfle Gardens is always looking for Carousel operators and gift shop help! We celebrated our ninth year of the Murder Mystery. The cast, crew, volunteers and park staff were exceptional. We had a special visit this year from a middle school class. One of the actors is a teacher and his class came to a dress rehearsal to critic us. We also offered special pricing to Friends members on the opening night of the show. Several Friends members took advantage and watched the show. Come join us for wonderful dinner and a fun time solving the mystery. If you would like to participate yourself, come join us for tryouts in January. This past January we had our first ever Indoor Garage Sale for Friends. It was a great success. A thank you to all the volunteers that staffed the sale, set up the tables, cooked food and cleaned up. Also, thank all of you that donated all your treasures to the garage sale. When you clean up after the holidays remember we will be looking for donations again for the 2015 Garage sale. I did receive a change to our secondary insurance coverage. Volunteer Liability and Excess Automobile Liability coverage will no longer insure volunteers from their homes to their volunteer stations and back. Coverage will be provided during their assigned volunteer duties. I thank everyone for their efforts and dedication during the year. There are many different volunteer positions, be it during the big events, the special events at each of the parks or those of you that work daily greeting visitors, volunteering at the nooks, helping prepare for events, making phone calls and the list goes on. We on the board appreciate ALL of you! We also need to recognize the volunteers that are not visible: the newspaper editor, photographer, writers, the treasurer, the secretary, the nook managers, the membership secretary, the hour s secretary and the board members. The success of this organization depends on their efforts. It takes team effort to keep the organization running. Without their expertise and all your efforts, we would not be able to supply the volunteer and financial aid to Lorain County Metro Parks that we have been able to accomplish. Let s not forget your Corps Leaders. They are the back bone of Friends and are there to help 3

4 Letter from the President Cont.: you get your hours, to help park staff run programs, take care of the gardens, nooks, critters and Raptors. When they call or you, they are not just there to bug you, they need your help. They do a wonderful and valuable job and we thank them! This year I was saddened to accept the resignation of Dave Smith from the Board. In addition, Bob and Marge Holland resigned from the Miller Nature Nook. The Board greatly appreciates all their hard work and dedication. They all will be missed. Thank you to the volunteers and staff who continue to send in the Chip A Grams. This is a small way we can thank volunteers for their special efforts. All I can say is Keep m comin There is a survey we are passing out this year we would like for you to take time to fill out. We would like to hear from you on different ways we might thank you for your efforts. We currently give out hours pins. Should we continue? New name tags are coming out. It will not be necessary for you to use a lanyard anymore. Our vest supply is nearly gone. Would you like to continue to use vests? Would you be interested in window clings again? These are just some of the questions we would like answered. How can we thank you? A note to let you know there will be a levy on the November ballot for Lorain County Metro Parks. I was around for the last levy and I look forward to the new levy passing. I am excited with all the prospects this levy will cover. I have heard many of you talking about Cascade Park. This is just one of the projects to be accomplished with the new levy. Get out there and join me in voting for our parks! I have rambled enough. It s time for me to close by saying thank you again to all of you for a great year. Without Friends like you, we would not have the strong support and dedication necessary to support Lorain County Metro Parks. As I sit at my computer and work on the annual dinner report, I think about all of you I have had the privilege of meeting and working with in addition to those of you volunteering diligently that I have not been able to meet and I am truly humbled by all your efforts. I have no fear for the future of Lorain County Metro Parks. Friend s volunteers will continue to keep the love of our parks alive and well into the future. My sincere gratitude to you all, Cheryl June, President. Wellington Reservation Updates Here is a big THANK YOU to all the volunteers who have helped make our park THE PLACE TO BE. 11 Message from the Director/Secretary for the Lorain County Metro Parks Included in the program for Friends Annual Dinner June 28, 2014 Dear Friends, I am honored to be with you today as you celebrate yet another successful year of accomplishments. Since becoming Director over two years ago, I am incredibly impressed and pleased about the ever increasing level; of contributions that the Friends make to the success of the Lorain County Metro Parks. On behalf of the staff and the Board of Park Commissioners, we are extremely grateful for all of the work in each of our parks. We cannot say thank you enough for your endless contributions at all of our facilities. This has been yet another exciting year for us as we continue toward the completion of our next Strategic Ten Year Plan. While that has kept us very busy, our staff, with your assistance, has kept our facilities clean, safe, and brimming with customers attending our programs and events. We were able to manage some severe flood damage, and complete some trail projects in Elyria, make some overdue repairs and improvements at other facilities, and complete some renovations and repairs at the Splash Zone. With your help and dedication, our overall visitation increased, especially at some of our newer facilities like Miller Nature Preserve and the Mercy Health and Recreation facility at Hollstein Reservation. We continue to work with Elyria to coordinate a seamless transition as we work toward improving Cascade Park. Our theme of connectivity not only pertains to future physical connections, but also the connections that each and every one of you makes as you encounter our visitors in our parks. As always, the staff continues to work diligently in seeking new ways to better utilize our facilities and your input and participation continues to be invaluable. I, along with the Board and the staff, am so very appreciative for your expertise, caring attitudes, commitment, and hard work that you contribute on behalf of the Lorain County Metro Parks. We would not be so incredibly successful without each and every one of you. We anxiously anticipate your continued support and collaboration as we embark on some new and exciting projects and ventures. We will be heavily relying on each and every one of you as our representatives and ambassadors as we continue to seek the support of the citizens of Lorain County at the ballot box in November. I look forward to continuing our wonderful partnership and becoming even more successful in our endeavors in the coming years. Sincerely, James E. Ziemnik, Director Friends Facebook Page The Friends Facebook page is up and running: friends of lorain county metro parks. This will be a closed group. Please request membership in order to access the page. We will be posting volunteer opportunities, you will be able to send in hours and communicate any needs or questions. Thank you to Elaine Clark, Jennifer Lawson and Pam Pastor for getting us up and running. Carlisle Visitor Center LaGrange Miller Nature Nook Sheffield Village Schoepfle Garden Birmingham 11

When asked why she volunteers with Friends of the Metro Parks, Dot said This is one of the nicest choices for volunteering available in the area. Dot has a wealth of knowledge about the Lorain County Metro Parks as she was describing her early volunteering at the white house that was the Metro Parks at that time. She is so amazed at how much and how beautifully the Lorain County Metro Parks has grown into so many wonderful parks that appeal to a variety of interests. Dot said in closing that she values her volunteering because it has provided so many opportunities to learn everywhere you turn and meet so many wonderful people. Dot believes that the Lorain County Metro Parks is a wonderful organization that provides a wide range of options to enjoy with your family and friends. She encourages all of us to take advantage of these opportunities as she has, because it is a great place to volunteer!!
