FROM JIM AND PATTI BURR CHAPTER DIRECTORS Greeting everyone What a September we have had. As most of you know Patti and I live in a 55+ community. I was speaking to our Landscaper and he stated he has never seen so much water in such a short period of time. My development is so water log we have small sink holes being created. Scary as you don t know where or when another one will show up. Well as I have said this newsletter is all about our experiences at Wing Ding in Knoxville. We had a great time. Getting there was uneventful as Bob and Diana Long and us ventured from the Gathering to Knoxville. We motored down in our new Motorhome we call Betty Boop. Yes, after the famous cartoon character. We stop for dinner at Cracker Barrel and if you have ever done this, most cracker barrels always sit on top of a hill. Well as I was pulling in my hitch drag the ground and left me with no jack. It bent my jack all the way up. This turned out to be an omen on what lay ahead for me. Funny thing happen as we got into Knoxville. We put the campground in our GPS and we followed the directions. Patti contacted the Campground to verify that the GPS was giving us the correct path and we would not get stuck under a bridge or something. They told us not to follow the GPS and go another way. It was faster. Well I don t know what he was telling us, but it was crazy. The exit he told us to take did not exist. He told us to go left and the only way to go was right. After driving around for minutes trying to figure it out, we put the address back into our GPS and away we went. Found the campground in 20 minutes. Lesson learn is to follow your GPS unless it is taking you off a cliff. On Monday we headed down the road to meet Bob and Dianna to travel to the Ark. We had planned on this for some time and we were looking forward to it. We were sitting on the side of the freeway putting the address in and we found out it was 4.5 hours trip one way. 9 hours on the trikes plus 4 hours touring did not add up. So, we decided to go to Gatlinburg TN. Enjoyable ride through the back roads. We got there and took a tram up to the mountain top where they ski. Great views of the area and all the homes they built on the mountain. We decided to all have some fun and ride the mountain down on individual cars. Diana led with Bob going second and Patti and I following up in the rear. We all figure we would fly down the course since you control the speed (up to 45 MPH) in which you could go. (Well that was the farthest from the truth. Bob decide the leisurely route would be fun, so he went so slow that Patti car and my car would stop abruptly (Hard) or stop on a curve. If it wasn t for the seatbelt I would have fallen out. Maybe Bob had that plan) After that experience Bob and I sat and watch Patti and Diana go on the ice on a tube. They were hilarious to watch banging into each other or going in circles around the ice. I watch the video every time I need to have a laugh. Remember the omen to my trip at the beginning. Well My plan was to have a new tire install and windshield on this trip. That s all. Well to make it brief, it took 5 hours to install 1 tire. 2.5 hours to install a windshield and wings. A total of 7.5 hours to get 2 items installed. Most of my day was spent walking the vendors and waiting.

Chapter Directors con t To add to the frustration, it took 3 days to install lights that were a bargain that should have taken 3 hours. What an experience with vendors. We lead a ride to Bush Beans on Friday. We had 10-chapter members join us (Barry & Denise Ness, Bob and Diana Long, Duayne & Shirley Keen, Eric & Linda Clavier, and Carl & Bonnie Esbenshade). It was enjoyable and fun. We all got into a photo with Duke (May he rest in Peace). We had a great lunch and decide to take a fun loop back home. We had a U turn, a detour, and rain. We got lost, found our way and got lost again. Can t go anywhere without something not going right. Most importantly we had loads of fun. Betty Boop took us home with a stop at a Walmart parking lot to sleep. What a trip and experience we had. Other than the vendors we both made some great memories. Thanks to everyone who came along for the ride. We are glad you all had a great time and had your own memories to create. Be safe Jim & Patti Rider Education: First Aid, CPR & AED Training November 17 th, after the Gathering. Earl Ostrander will bring his unique, highly entertaining and informative teaching style and provide us with an entertaining education in First Aid, CPR & AED. Now for the bad news. His price has gone up to $25 per person this year. This is because of his certification costs going way up. We are still getting a bargain, as he is charging $45- $55 for the same class everywhere else. There is a sign-up on the website so you can sign up for this class. We will have a roster at the training. We ll need your name (as it appears on your GWRRA Card) and your GWRRA Number. Accurate name and numbers will be important so Chuck Stone, District Educator, can update your records and Earl has accurate information for your certification card. First Aid/CPR Training is required to Advance to Level III and Level IV and recertification is required every 2 years. Beyond that, the more training you have in these lifesaving skills, the more likely you ll be able to make a difference in someone s life should the need arise. I can attest that in an emergency your training kicks in, and the more training you have, the better you ll perform in an emergency. 5 FROM RON AND SANDY SPENCE ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTORS Well this Summer was here and now gone as is Wing Ding, the grand finale. A wet summer we from all parts of the country will remember for quite a spell. Wing Ding is an opportunity for GWRRA members from all over the country to gather together for a time of comradery, new friendships, and fellowship. For myself, I enjoyed a little of all. I got to meet a fb friend from Alabama that I ve been friends with for three years, that coincidently was staying at the same RV park as we were. I met another fb friend that is CD of Tennessee T that took 50 bikes out on a 7county ride through Tennessee. But some of the best times you will ever have at a Wing Ding or any gathering of motorcyclists is the new friendships you will make, because of a motorcycle. I met a young couple from Minnesota that left for a vacation on August 4th that culminated in Knoxville at Wing Ding, I followed Paul and Lynn in the parade. At parades end we parked and I noticed a plexiglass type shield behind the passenger seat for wind deflection on their bike and a conversation developed. We sat in the area for nearly an hour and talked about bikes, home, and GWRRA. After ice cream as we said our goodbyes and well wishes for a safe trip home. None of us could have imagined what was going to happen on September 6 th. Paul was riding to work, just another ride. There was a slight curve in the road and he was cut off by an RV and another car changing lanes into his. He was forced into a lane with stopped traffic. With virtually no time to react, he rear ended a stopped car at approximately 50 mph. ATGATT and airbag saved me, he told me in an two days later. He has a small crack in each wrist and bumps and bruises. Chapter life is important for many reasons and to not have one during this time would leave an emptiness. The chapter they were trying to join, closed right before they left on vacation so as we think of them at this time remember how blessed we are. Even though a thousand miles may separate us, friends they are and welcome here at our home just as we are at theirs, because of a motorcycle. Be Safe, Ron & Sandy Paul & Lynn Hoslack from Minnesota Paul after accident Jerry & Melissa Rodgers (on bike) from Alabama

FROM JOHN PARKER M.E.C. October Fall Riding Season is Still Good If we can shed some of this rain, there are still a lot of activities and good riding or 4 wheel events in October. On October 6 th, we will be doing Flag Maintenance at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery; we meet at Funck s Restaurant for breakfast at 7:00AM and then at the Flag Shed at 8:00AM. On Tuesday evenings during October we will be at Knight and Day Diner for dinner and ice cream starting about 5:45PM. Our Chapter Gathering will be on October 27 th, eat at 9:00AM and gathering at 9:30AM and at 6:00PM a Halloween/Costume Party at the Simmons Home. I am sure there will be some other rides in October; check the website and the upcoming event s for the latest information. Thank-you to all who have participated in Roll for Dough this year; I would especially like to thank Gerry and Bonnie Kerkeslager for their setting up chapter visits, we have enough points (20) to qualify for free chapter dues and currently have 26 points and October visits still count. That said we have visited just about every PA Chapter and a few outside PA so there are a limited number of places left to visit. Although it is not a competition, we are in first place and forging new territory on the chart, and as of this writing, 2 nd place is Chapter T with 19 points and 3 rd place is Chapter I with 14points. We only need five members attending to get the point but we during the year (which ends October 31 st, have been getting more folks enjoying the fun of visiting other chapters and other districts, that is great, the more the merrier, keep up the good work. If you know a motorcyclist, any brand, invite them to a gathering, a chapter function or a chapter ride, that is the only way they can get a good look at us. We welcome all riders/co-riders to come enjoy our events, we promise a good time. Our Tuesday evening ice cream/dinner socials have again been a huge success, it is not unusual to have chapter members out to visit with each other. Again, I would like to thank everyone for wearing their colors more frequently; I have been to several functions where the increase is noticeable. Chapter Pride, is important when we are out as a group; we want everyone to know who we are, so that they can appreciate our safe riding and good behavior. Finally, I wish each of you a continued healthy, happy and safe riding season, attend as many of our planned events for your Fun, Safety and Knowledge, as you can. 7 SOME OF OUR MUST VISIT LIST By Connie & Earl Breneman Our adventure before Wing Ding 40 took us to Maggie Valley, NC where we visited Wheels Through Time the Museum that Runs. This is a place we had never been to before Everywhere you look is filled with amazing displays and signage with information on what is being displayed. Another amazing part to the visit is through out the day they will start and run the different motorcycles. They give you the history of each machine and then start it up and let it run. It was a place we had talked about visiting many times and we were not disappointed. It is like going back in time and walking into a garage or store, back in the day and seeing all makes and models of vintage motorcycles, cars, bikes and parts. As you walk through the museum your brain is on overload of what you are seeing. For a bit afterwards they are ready to answer any questions you might have for them. I'm sure you could walk though this museum and see something new each time. Put this on your must visit list. Maggie Valley is a small town close to the southern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway that meets up with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We decided to ride the Parkway to the end and take Route 441 and head north into the Smoky Mountain to visit Clingmans Dome Visitors Center. From the Center you can take a ½ mile uphill hike to the Dome that is a 6,643 ft. summit overlook point that marks the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the highest point in Tennessee, and the highest point along the Appalachian Trail. One of our members, Craig had passed through there in the Spring of this year, only it was fogged in when he was there. On a clear day the dome provides a panoramic 100 mile view into 7 states. This was our third visit to the Dome and it didn't disappoint us and it has always been worth the trip. This is another must visit stop to put on your list. So if you don't have a list start one, and if you have one, get out there and visit and let us know about it so maybe we will want to go there too. Happy Travel Adventures!

DENISE & BARRY S KNOXVILLE EXPERIENCE Our travel down to Knoxville was pretty much uneventful. Cool morning & warming afternoon heat as we got to Day s Inn. However this was the calm before the storm. While Denise was resting in the cool motel air...i was doing a LOT of installing items and pushing & shoving a bike. SO, what follows is the Bill for services for said services. 1. Earl Breneman: 2 BIG HUGS from Connie for headlight bulb install. 2. Larry Greathouse: 3 BIG HUGS from Ruth Ann for bolt & nut tightening of various components on bike. Also, labor to pick-up bike as well as loading to trailer. 3. Unknown Winger: needed larger tools than I had for "nut" removal to install "new rake" purchased. No Charge. 4. Bill Bard: 3 Hugs from Donna for trailer bulb install & getting up early to ride home in the cool temps of the dark hours. 5. Barry Sattazahn: helping to cover bike at night time. Paid In Full. He paid Denise with Hershey's candies!! So...the total bill is 8 hugs from those charged at the next Chapter B Gathering! Barry & Denise

CAMPING OR GLAMPING AT WING DING 40 While most people pack their bikes to go to Wing Ding, we actually packed our bike in our Toy Hauler. We ve done that for 5 trips this year and riding up and down the ramp is still cause for concern. But for Wing Ding we had one of our most unusual camp sites ever, and we ve been camping for 24 years. Our site was on the top (5 th floor) of the Knoxville Civic Coliseum Parking Garage. We had full hookup (50 Amp, Water & Sewer). No, the sewer hose was not just dangled over the side of the building. And no, we did not have to tow up one of those corkscrew ramps to get to the 5 th floor. The road alongside of the garage leading to the top of the hill where the Knoxville Police Department is located had a small ramp going directly to the top deck. I guess they installed all the utilities so entertainers could park their tour buses on top. It was a great place to stay and the free Knoxville Trolley that stopped across the street from the parking garage and got us to within a block of the Convention Center made traveling back and forth easy. I was concerned about towing in to downtown Knoxville, but it was too easy. The Biggest problem was the heat. The two air conditioners on our Montana couldn t keep up with the cooling. By mid-afternoon the temperature inside would be up to the high 70 s. But it cooled down nicely for the night. Overall, we had a great time at Wing Ding and found a few things for the Eric & Linda Clavier

MY FIRST WING DING by Don Engle Mary and I made a pact that I could attend Wing Ding 2018, if we went on vacation and took the car. Deal! You see attending a Wing Ding was on my bucket list. We set out early Saturday morning with Harper s Ferry as our destination. PA-B had been there and I wanted to play catch up. It was a beautiful day and we got to enjoy the entire town and all that it had to offer. We even walked part of the Appalachian Trail (another Bucket List item). After that we headed south to Elkins West VA where the next morning we had reservations for the new 4 hour long Tygart Railroad Train ride to Water Falls of the Cheat River which offered a catered luncheon buffet part of the Cass Railroad Tour System. After a lovely day there, we then headed south towards Knoxville. Since it was late in the day and 8 hours away, we decided to stay overnight in Princeton, VA and head out in the morning. It was now Monday as we headed towards Knoxville and at the last minute we decided to go to Dolly Wood, another bucket list item. We arrived just around lunch time and spent the rest of the day there enjoying the shows and having a wonderful home-made meal. We then headed to Knoxville for the rest of our stay, On Tuesday we headed to the Bush Bean Tour where we caught up with Connie and Earl. After lunch they headed for the hotel and we headed out for a cave tour at the Forbidden Cave. Wednesday was Wing Ding day! I purchased Mary and me a one day pass and we toured the Vendors booths. That took about the whole morning. It was a scratch off my bucket list, but after that, I really wasn t impressed but glad I attended. After that, we headed out to the Lodge Cast Iron outlet so Mary could pick up a few things to complete her cast iron cooling selection. Thursday we said our goodbyes to our PA-B family at the hotel and headed to the Ark Encounter and the Creation Museum. We spent a-half day at each. Then we started the long drive home. We found a hotel along the way and headed the rest of the way home on Saturday. It was a whirl wind vacation but the time together, the time with our PA-B family and all that we got to see and do made for a fantastic vacation! (until I got the Visa bill this past Monday just joking)

WING DING BRUSHY MOUNTAIN PENITENTIARY RIDE by Barry Sattazahn It was a beautiful day for a cycle ride and Jim Duff led 10 of us on a ride on Thursday to Brushy Mountain Penitentiary, but to get there he planned that we would have to ride on the Devil Triangle. I ve ridden on the Tail of the Dragon and also the Back of the Dragon a number of times and felt confident Devil Triangle with 44 miles of loops would be no big deal. Well I was surprised when we had 3 very tight sharp switchbacks that we climb through on the way there. They were challenging and little scary, but we all made it safely to prison. Many of us found the Brushy Mountain Penitentiary I think very interesting. The prison open in 1896 and closed in It was a max security prison for the worst of them. James Earl Ray who killed Martin Luther King was one of them who spent time there. We got there at just the right time as they were doing a TV documentary and we got to listen as a former guard and former prisoner talked about what life was like at the prison. They were so very interesting to listen to as they told what went on at the prison, plus they were able to answer questions we had. There was also a 15 minute movie that was shown that told so much about the history and life at the prison. The fellow that was a prisoner showed us his cell which wasn t very far from where James Earl Ray cell was. The cell actually could handle 2 prisoners at a time, but 4 prisoners lived there. While 2 of the prisoners sleep the other 2 worked in the mines or wherever needed and then they would switch. Back then the whites and blacks were separated. They actually grew a lot of the food they ate on the prison property. The former guard mention that back then the guards ran the prison, but today the prison are worse, as the gangs run the prison in his opinion. The prison was a big employer for many of the families in the area so generations of a family would end up working there. In 1931 there was 976 prisoners 300 more then it was made for. After touring the prison Jim, Richard, and I went back through the Devil Triangle, but going back wasn t as bad. Thanks Jim for leading a great day of riding.

DISTRICT NEWS By Harold and Diane Jackson PA District Directors.Fall is officially here and so is the chilly weather. We rode with PA-N (our home chapter) to Erie for lunch and ice cream at Sara s on the peninsula. When we left home it was 53 degrees, it reached a high of 60; it was a beautiful ride. With the weather changing, we need to remember to plan for the ride and that your ride will be different then it was this summer. Don t forget there are additional road hazards this time of year such as leaves, school buses and wildlife is moving around more. Stay safe and have FUN! The PA District raffle tickets have been distributed to your chapter. Hopefully, your Chapter has dispersed the tickets to you to sell. They make good Chirstmas presents, stocking stuffers or tips for wait staff. They make a great thank you to a whole list of people who help and serve you such as your mail carrier, garbage collector, lawn mower or the person that removes snow. Remember for every ticket you sell you are helping your Chapter. We are looking for two (2) chapters to step up and host All Chapters East and All Chapters West. If you need any information or if your chapter is volunteering, please give us a call. It is a great fund raiser for the chapter and the event is FUN to host. The registration form is online for the PA District Rally Ride of the Roses, May 16-18, 209 at the Wyndham Garden in York, PA. Make sure you take time to review the registration and get it in early if you plan on attending any of the special events, many of them have limited space. We already have registrations! Don t forget to book your room at the hotel. I hope you did not miss Wing Ding 40! It was a great time in Knoxville, TN with 8,090 in attendance. PA had some awards distributed to individuals in the District; pleas take some time to look at that page and see who won. Wing Ding 41 will be held in Nashville, TN at the Gaylord, August 27-31, The Gaylord is accepting reservations and can be reached at ; the room rate is $149/night and $10/day for parking. These are great rates and you need to make your reservation soon before the block of rooms is sold out. The big event on the calendar this month is Halloween. Watch for trick or treaters (they may be hard to see in their costume) as they run between cars to get to the next house for their treat. Remember to always ride safe! Harold and Diane Jackson Your PA District Directors

PA DISTRICT EDUCATOR CHUCK STONE The fall colors are some of the most beautiful scenery you will see during the remainder of the riding season. With the cold weather soon moving in I think that most of us will start thinking of what we have to do to prepare the wings for winter storage. Something you should consider doing before putting the wing away for the season is a T-CLOCK inspection. TIRES: Your tires may need to be replaced. Now would be the time to start this project rather than waiting for the spring riding season to start. CLUTCH: Check the clutch and brake reservoirs. Are they low in fluid or has the fluid turned a very dark color? If they have you should change both the clutch and brake fluid now. LUBRICANTS: How long has it been since you changed your anti-freeze. Remember your anti-freeze has been working hard to keep your engine cool and to lubricate your water pump. MAKE SURE you use the proper anti-freeze when changing, as not all types of anti-freeze will work in your Wing. OIL: You may wait until spring to change your oil but I personally do not think it is a good idea to leave the old oil in the engine over the winter because it contains acids as well as old oil has a tendency to turn to sludge as it sets and the dirt sinks to the bottom of the engine case. CABLES & CONTROLS: You should check your throttle and choke cables for smooth operation. Make sure the throttle returns with a snap and to an idle when released. The choke, if equipped, also needs to work smoothly and to return to the open position. KICKSTAND: Does your kickstand have free movement and a good spring to pull it up? Look at the switches and check the operation with the switch on. Check the center stand s return spring for smooth operation. If you are not going to run your motorcycle at least once a month during storage, you should put the battery tender on to keep the level of charge up to the maximum level.

CHUCK STONE cont In addition to the T-Clock inspection, you should check the battery terminals and make sure they are clean and the water level in the battery is at the proper level. If you are not going to run your motorcycle at least once a month during storage, you should put the battery tender on to keep the level of charge up to the maximum level. Last but not least you should clean up the wing, wax it and cover it for the winter storage season to protect it from dust. If you take the above precautions, you should be ready to go in the spring and have an enjoyable riding season having done your preparation during the winter season while the bike is being stored. Ride Safe and Ride Proud Chuck & Evelyn Stone PA District Educators ICE CREAM FOR OCTOBER KNIGHT & DAY DINER 3140 Lititz Pike Lititz, PA Food and Ice Cream Room reserved in the back.
