B TEAM LEADERS Chapter Directors Rob and Pat Simmons FROM ROB AND PAT SIMMONS YOUR CHAPTER DIRECTORS Assistant Chapter Directors Jim and Patti Burr Chapter Educator Eric Clavier Chapter M.E.C. Jeanne Parker Treasurer Connie Breneman A COUPLE OF OVERNIGHT RIDES M.A.D. Coordinator Thus far this riding season Chapter B has had two overnight rides. One to Johnstown and one to Skyline Drive. B TEAM WEB Coordinator Don Engle donengle@nrbusa.com Ice Cream Coordinator Bob and Diana Long lapplejack@aol.com Dinner Coordinators Bob and Libbie Grumbine mskittie49@comcast.net Ride Coordinators Jim Duff jim_duff@comcast.net Wayne Ferland wftigger@gmail.com Sunshine Person Libbie Grumbine mskittie49@comcast.net Couple of the Year 2016 & Merchandisers Ron and Sandy Spence rkspence@epix.net Newsletter Editors Becky Duff rduffteach@comcast.net Chapter of the Year Coordinators John Parker conestogagent1800@verizon.net Scrapbook Coordinator Linda Clavier lindaclavier@hotmail.com The Johnstown ride, although I don t think we actually made it to Johnstown, was July 28 through the 31 st. Wayne led the ride and Jim Duff planned much of the route. We started with an evening ride to Thurmont, MD. We spent one night in Thurmont and two nights at a motel near Johnstown. We began our first full day with a stop at the Catoctin Mountain National Park where Pat and I got our National Park Senior Pass. Holders of National Park Senior Passes get free admission to all National Parks. One must be 62 or older to get a senior pass. There is only one catch, you must remember to bring the pass with you. John Oberholser forgot his and now is the proud owner of TWO Senior Park Passes. Our next stop was Flight 93. If you haven t been to the Flight 93 (another National Park) you should make some time to go. It was very impressive, and sad. On our third day we had an unexpected surprise, The Allegheny Portage Railroad (another National Park). Jim had planned this stop as a surprise destination. We had never heard of the Allegheny Portage Railroad and were pleasantly surprised. The Portage Railroad built in 1840 transported, pulled, canal boats 36 miles over the Allegheny Mountains. They picked the canal boats out of the water on one side of the mountains and deposit them back into the water on the other side. The giant steam engine that drove the continuous cable (originally a rope) had less horse power than a Goldwing. Thanks Jim, that was a nice surprise.
A COUPLE OF OVERNIGHT RIDES (Continued) Our last stop for the day was to see if Punxsutawney Phil Sowerby, the legendary groundhog, was home. He wasn t, but it was interesting to see where the yearly party takes place. Our second overnight ride was to the Skyline Drive and Seneca Rocks area. Once again Wayne planed and led the ride. The Skyline Drive was beautiful, as usual, and again, we were able to use our National Park Pass. The Pass saved us $ We spent two nights at the same hotel in Petersburg, it was nice to not have to pack every day. We started Saturday with a stop at Seneca Rock (another National Park) then on to Green Bank for a tour of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and then onto the Cass Railroad for lunch. Green Bank is home to a huge Radio Telescope. The dish is over two acres and at 485 feet tall is the largest moving structure in the world. This was mine and Pat s third trip to Green Bank and we still enjoyed the visit. After lunch we were back on the road. Our new favorite road is Rt This was Craig s suggestion, and what a great ride! So far this summer we have had two very enjoyable overnight rides. Pat and I have not only enjoyed the destinations and the rides, but also the time with our friends. For those of you have not joined us, you have missed some terrific guided rides. Our last overnight ride will be at the end of September and we will be going to Niagara Falls. Please check our chapter website soon to sign up. We want to make sure that hotel accommodations are available for everyone. You won t regret this trip, the leaves will be brilliant at this time of year!!! Rob and Pat
GOOD BYE, MY GOOD FRIEND I got to know Jim and Jeanne over the last 5 years as Jim and I join GWRRA about the same time. Going to Ice cream on Tuesday nights, doing the rides after Gathering and other activities that might come up. We enjoyed seeing the Reading Royal hockey team play, or see an Eagles football game. He and I would bet dinner on who would win between his beloved Denver Broncos and my San Diego Chargers. I lost more times than I won and he would enjoy the moment each and every time. He was so much fun to be around. He had a great sense of humor and was always smiling. I will always remember our rides to Greenville (Wing Ding), Niagara Falls, (Erie State Rally) and our ride to the wine country. As some of you got to see by the tribute to him he was a family man first and foremost. His love of his wife Jeanne, sons Tony, Tim and daughter Michele were always his first priority. He would always tell me how proud he was of them and he was truly blessed. When Jim broke his neck, he was so appreciative of all us joining in to help Tony and his friends get his garage and house taken care of. He realize then how special his Chapter B family was and that he never forgot what we did that day. When Jim got cancer he told me he was going to fight it and that he did. Over the next 10 months he went through the testing and all of the treatments, never wavering and always having that smile on his face and the sense of humor he was known for..
During a pause in his treatment some of the Chapter came out and put lights on his bike. After it was completed Gerry took Jim for a ride on his trike as I rode Jim s bike. Richard and Jeanne followed. We rode for about 10 miles. Jim face just glowed with excitement when he saw what his bike look like all lit up. It was the last time Jim rode on a Goldwing and he totally enjoy every moment. Jim lost his battle but through it all, Jim taught me more about courage, resilience, and fortitude than any person I knew. In the end I will never know a person such as Jim. I will miss his passion for life. I will always cherish the times we experienced, fun we had, and talks we shared. I lost a great friend. Jim Burr
FROM ERIC CLAVIER RIDER EDUCATOR Rider Education: Riding a Street Motorcycle in Gravel/Sand/Dirt Goldwings are phenomenal touring bikes and can easily devour many miles of asphalt with a sure footed confidence and ease. But what about gravel? If you only ride a trike, you can probably stop reading now; the following applies to two wheelers. We ve all been there; a roadside pull off, parking lot or the unexpected gravel road. Maybe something with loose rocks and/or dirt and sand. That KOA or B&B you re staying at with the gravel roads or long gravel driveway could easily catch you unprepared. Most people don t go to quite the effort that the movie Mad Max Fury Road went to, to modify their Goldwings for off road excursions. Whether it s gravel, dirt, sand, grass or any other slick surface the same rules apply. Minimize the motorcycle s lean, and refrain from sudden inputs such as braking, accelerating or swerving. The off road adventure courses I ve attended stress counter-leaning / counter-balancing when in the potentially slippery stuff. That low speed counter balancing technique can be used at higher speeds, but is not as efficient when on high traction surfaces as it is leaning into the curve. Keep scanning and looking ahead. Gravel, dirt and sand can be deceiving and lull you into a false sense of security. Watch for changes in the surface, areas where loose sand or deeper gravel have accumulated and be ready to avoid them or change your line.
It s not easy for me at 6 4 to stand and ride the wing, but on the Tenere, the preferred off road riding position is the Adventure Position. Standing straight up, controlling the balance of the bike by shifting your weight on the pegs, gripping the tank with your knees. This position gives you a much better view of the road ahead and better control of the bike. So, you re riding and you come up on a patch of gravel in the road. Stay calm. The best tactic is to maintain the momentum of your motorcycle and slow down gradually with very light use of both brakes. Tires can easily slide, even in light gravel, so finesse and gentle braking is key to prevent going down. Keep your upper body relaxed, steer the bike without fighting it or trying to muscle it around. Gradual / gentle application of throttle, keep your momentum and minimize stopping. Keep the motorcycle as vertical as possible. Minimize the lean of your bike. Take turns wider and use counter balancing. Open up the space between bikes. This gives you more time to react smoothly. This is the one that bit me in April and two riders at a training session I attended this August. You go where you are looking, so don t look down. Focus on where you want to ride, and maintain your scan. Stay alert for changing road conditions or problems in the road. Be careful about focusing on that pothole, log or loose patch, you might ride right into it. Part of staying relaxed is to stay calm. Slow controlled breaths in thru the nose and out thru the mouth. Be mentally prepared. Tell yourself this is no problem and you ll get thru it. If the voice in your head is saying NO WAY, listen to it, and turn around. If you go for it, keep the negative thoughts out of your head, stay positive. Do I like riding off the hard ball? Very much so! I prefer doing it on my Super Tenere with the knobby tires, skid plate and big suspension travel. But don t underestimate the Wing or your abilities. 10 911 MEMORIAL RIDE On August 18 th, Larry, myself, our son Damon and his son Jack left Park City on the 911 Memorial Ride. This just happens to be the last Memorial Ride people 1400 motorcycles, fire truck, ambulances and police motorcycles covered this historic ride. The ride with all motorcycles covered 10 miles long and it took the police motorcade 45 minutes to get from the back to the front of the line. All the highways were blocked off and we always had clear roads to travel to our next destination. We left Park City in beautiful weather and 95 motorcycles, heading toward Harley Davidson, Gettysburg, where we had a complete bar-b-que chicken dinner and picked another 150 motorcycles. From there we headed to the 93 Memorial in Schwenksville, and after touring the site we stayed the night. Every day started at 5:45 am and leaving at 6:45 am for our next stop the Pentagon. All along this trip we were met by people supporting the 911 Memorial Ride, stopping along the highway and waving, all along the streets in the town, above the bridges waving flags and just waving. The patriotism from the people was just outstanding and overwhelming at times. We are so glad that we had the opportunity to support and participate on this 911 Memorial Ride and just maybe it will happen again next year because it should never be the Last. The time involved in orchestrate this huge event, all the people giving of their time and the donation of all the lunches that were served and you can only imagine the fueling of all this equipment. The gas pumps never shut off, you never got off your motorcycle, but you were told how many gallons you consumed, so we paid extra to help the response team with their fuel charges. A BIG Thank You to everyone that gave of their time to make this ride a memorable one for everyone who attended. Ruth Ann Greathouse

DISTRICT NEWS By Rick and Andi Riek PA District Directors Greetings everyone, Well the 2016 riding season has been in full swing for a couple of months, but now we have to say it is winding down for us folks here in the northwest part of the country. Daylight is dimming sooner in the evening and now the fireflies aren t as active as just a couple of weeks ago. I am typing this newsletter article while listening to the cicadas singing their fall mating song. Don t despair or start thinking you need to put your wing away yet because there is still some good riding left ahead of us for a little while. You can tell the season is winding down by all the county fairs starting to pop up and the various district conventions going on around the region. During the past year and a half that Andi and I have been District Directors we have had the privilege of attending various chapter events throughout the district and have observed many different ways that chapter directors lead their gatherings. We have heard some interesting thoughts recently that listed the differences between a manager and a leader. Here is some of our thoughts. The manager is a copy; the leader is an original. The manager maintains; the leader develops. The manager focuses on systems and structure; the leader focuses on people. The manager relies on control; the leader inspires trust. The manager has a short-range view; the leader has a long-range perspective. The manager imitates; the leader originates. The manager does things right; the leader does the right thing. I'm sure we will see ourselves in one of the above statements. In trying to lead your chapter, you will probably need to sometimes be a manager and sometimes be a leader. It all depends on the situation. Every chapter is different and one leadership style may work well with one chapter, but not so well with another chapter. Your responsibility as chapter director is the welfare of the chapter and making it successful. Another good sign of a successful chapter is the enthusiasm of their leader. If you are enthusiastic about growing your chapter, then your members will also be enthusiastic. If you are on an ice cream ride and your chapter is laughing and having fun, other people will see that and may become interested in joining your chapter. Take a step back and look at your chapter. Is it having fun and growing or has it become mundane and doing the same old, same old at each gathering? It's never too late to start something new. Don't be afraid to try some new ideas. If one idea doesn't work, then try something else. You can never fail as long as you keep trying.
Joel has been busy cutting checks to the PA District raffle ticket winners. We have had some unsold or returned tickets from chapters that were winners. But the majority of the winners were sold by various PA chapters. There were instances where the winning number was a returned unsold and was in between two sold tickets. What are the chances? But that's why they call it a lottery. Maybe if the chapter has sufficient funds they could purchase unsold tickets. All it would take is one ticket to hit and you could recoup your investment. This is just a thought. Finishing touches are being made for the 2017 PA District Rally flyer and registration form. Make sure you save the dates - May 18,19,20, When we sent out the survey after our last rally, we received some good ideas from our membership that may boost our fun for the 2017 rally. If you had a good time at this last rally, you can count on having as much fun if not more in We noticed that some chapters are working on ride schedules for There are dates that you will need to save for the upcoming year. We have chapters that have stepped up to host All Chapters East and All Chapters West for Both chapters are working on details and dates as we write this article. As soon as they have everything in place we will make an announcement as to when and where they will be held. If you are making plans for next year one thing you can put a date for is our District Meeting. The date for the meeting is April 29, The meeting will be held in Altoona PA this year. Times and location is posted on the District website. We are encouraging all our chapters to start posting their chapter events on our PA District website. If you have a flyer or not you can put an announcement on our website for other members to see. This is a handy tool for chapters to use when they are scheduling rides and trying to get Roll for the Dough points. Also your chapter newsletter editor has the ability to post your event flyer on the newsletter section of the website, another good tool to use. If you have any questions please contact us and we will guide you in getting this accomplished. Rick & Andi Riek Pennsylvania District Directors groundshark@atlanticbb.net (814) Home (814) Cell Go for it now. The future is promised to no one.
