2 From the Prez We had a great Bloom Show at the Museum of Art and History last weekend. Congratulations to everyone who participated! The show looked so beautiful and was well attended (over 1,500 visitors). A big thank you to Kevin Larkin and Iris Wallace for co-chairing the show and running it so smoothly. Also, thank you to all the volunteers who worked so hard to make the event seamless and fun. At Friday s meeting we will go over the show so bring your compliments and suggestions for next year. We will be finalizing our three dahlia Dine-around gardens for our Sept. 23rd event. At Friday s meeting we will be also going over what to do in your garden this time of the year. We want to have a good showing at the County Fair from MBDS members so please consider bringing lots of blooms!! We need your blooms and your help. We will be going over all the Fair details on Friday. Happy Gardening.Kristine

3 Minutes MONTEREY BAY DAHLIA SOCIETY Meeting Minutes August 11, 2017 President Kristine called the meeting to order at 7:35. We will have demonstrations at the end of our meeting. Minutes July minutes were approved unanimously. Treasurers Report: to be presented next month. MBDS Show: Our show is August 26 th and 27 th at the McPherson Museum of Art downtown Santa Cruz. Kristine passed out the Volunteer Sign-up List and noted that it takes about 8 hours per person helping to make the show happen. Staging begins at 6:00 p.m. Friday night (August 25 th ) and must be complete by 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning. Kristine organized the volunteers for the bloom sales and other tasks. These include lunch arrangements, talks, raffle, etc. Dean and Mary will handle the Culture Table, they may need contributions of newer dahlia forms if club members can help out. County Fair Update Everyone is encouraged to enter both dahlias and other garden flowers in the County Fair which runs drom September 13 th 17 th. Many club members have created a committee that is running the Floriculture Department and any/all help is needed. Adult and children s display garden sites are available. There are premiums (cash!!) for each category. Mountain Feed in Ben Lomond has become involved and will feature a packaged hydroponics garden on display which will be raffled after the Fair. The judging seminar is next Saturday at San Leandro about 10 people from our club have signed up. The Mini-Show is August 5t at Kristine s a wonderful opportunity to practice your show skills and get advice from our members. Group Culture Discussion- Members described their feeding and spraying methods and timing. Joe uses Triple 12 ( which represent nitrogen, phosphate and potassium). Kristine likes fish emulsion and some members use Miracle-Gro. Kristine and Mary spray horticultural oil mixed with Captain Jacks Deadbug (spinosad) or Serenade at about 2 to 3-week intervals. Use of sulphur to control powdery mildew was also mentioned. Joe is having problems with the Light Brown Apple Moth (LBAM) in Santa Cruz and others are having problems with white flies and diabrotica (cabbage beetles). Events Schedule: August 12/13 th San Francisco Dahlia Show August 19/20 th San Leandro Show August 26/27 th Monterey Bay Dahlia Society Show September th Santa Cruz County Fair (flower show, including separate Dahlia Section) September 23 rd Club Dine-around Adjourned at 8:30.
