1 Message from the Headteacher Key Values: Innovation, Confidence, Aspiration, Respect, Enthusiasm 2016 Michaelmas Term No. 04 Newsletter Dear Parents Thank you to all those parents who attended the Macmillan coffee morning held by the Prep School class reps today and to all those parents who baked and prepared for the event. It was extremely successful and the final totals are being calculated. Mentoring As part of our commitment to your child s academic and general wellbeing your child has a mentor in school who they meet with on a half termly basis. As the new GCSEs appear to be more rigorous in their demands and applications of knowledge this mentoring will be more frequent for some Year 11 pupils. This ensures that pupils stay on target and are supported to a greater extent in preparation for their exams. Firefly We are introducing a new cloud based system for pupils, parents and staff in the school. This system will allow staff to upload homework that is set during the lesson. Pupils will initially still be asked to write their homework in their planners, however this will become less necessary as pupils start to access the Firefly system from home. It is hoped that after half term all homework will be set using Firefly and this will allow parents the opportunity to see what has been given and by whom and when it is due in. There are further applications for Firefly which will become evident as we progress through the year. All pupils will have access to the system by 1 November. Data and Reports As you were informed in the summer newsletter we are moving towards a paperless system for reporting and target setting. As such if you have not yet logged on to the Parent Portal you will be unable to access the reports generated. s have been sent out this week to parents who do not yet appear to have accessed the system. Please contact Mr R Tuck at the school if you appear to be having issues accessing the system. Pavilion As you will be aware the pavilion work has now started. Could I please ask that during this time you do not park in the new car park at the bottom of the drive. The contractors are currently using this as their access point into the site. I appreciate your patience with this. The School Ball We are now provisionally full for the Michaelmas Ball. Please could people return their booking form along with payment to the school by Monday 10, any provisional bookings without payment following this date will be released to those who are currently on a waiting list.

2 Key Values: Innovation, Confidence, Aspiration, Respect, Enthusiasm STEM Club Activity Julia Winiarczyk and Josh Heng (Y8) completed a project studying the design of space suits in the STEM club activity. They have been chosen to present their project, and meet Tim Peake, at the Principia Northern Schools' conference at York University. EK Nut Allergy - Safety Guidelines We aim to be a nut-free environment although we recognise that this cannot be guaranteed. The purpose is to reduce the risk to those children and adults who may suffer an anaphylactic reaction if exposed to nuts. Our catering facilities have precautions in place with a no-nut policy established and does not knowingly offer/serve up products that contain nuts. We cannot guarantee that there will be nothing in the school that might trigger an allergic reaction or that a pupil will never experience an allergy related event while at school. With a relatively small amount of effort and care we can, however, try together to ensure a safe environment for all our pupils. School Transport Open Morning - Saturday 15 All the school buses will run as normal on Saturday morning (usual pick-up times). As the Open Morning will finish at 12 noon the buses are scheduled to depart the school grounds at 12.15pm. 3 Key Values: Innovation, Confidence, Aspiration, Respect, Enthusiasm Emma Bond Year 11 Emma continues to go from strength to strength in the equestrian world. She recently attended the PetPlan Area Festival at North Allerton and won the PetPlan Equine St Georges trophy in a very strong class, beating many professional full time international riders. This qualifies her for the national finals at Hartpury College in April We congratulate Emma on this fantastic achievement and shall continue to follow her successes with great interest. GS How can pupils make the learning stick? (Mastery) Pupils need to be fully engaged and make use of opportunities to apply their knowledge They should view tasks as a means to reinforce learning They also need to take up any opportunities of support, whether it be from peers or teachers Act effectively upon feedback from teachers and follow up any advice Actively engage in lessons and embrace a variety of learning strategies Take up opportunities to coach/teach your peers you must understand it to teach it Consolidate learning using opportunities outside the classroom, even if they are not set as homework, it is so important to make sure that you understand the work you cover each day Check your learning throughout the lesson and ask if unsure Appropriately self-assess at appropriate intervals Ask people about revision strategies, if yours does not seem to work Connect the context of what you are learning to real life and every day examples or your interests wherever possible Adopt different formats for doing work wherever possible Frequently self-monitor? e.g. am I listening? am I understanding? Am I doing my assignment? Do not rely too much on your teachers, as... ADD
