4 From the Commodore WWelcome to the New Year 2018! It would be an understatement to say last year did not have its challenges but it would also be inaccurate to say the year was without reward and accomplishment. As I write this article for the VYC Forecast the fires are not out, good people are threatened and we have rallied around those of our VYC family who have lost so much. I am continually impressed by the strength and character of our club: Craig Leverault We are fine, we have already began making plans to rebuild and Lynn Martin We will build again and surround ourselves with music. Very successful people form attitudes and methods in life that lead to their personal happiness and accomplishments. My observation is that they are strong yet compassionate, embrace the past but live in the moment, dream but are pragmatic and they constantly move forward. We as individuals will do exactly that as will your Ventura Yacht Club in As I noted in my remarks at the Change of Command Dinner, the first tenant of leadership is to do no harm. We belong to a club that has survived for over 75 years and is recognized for its friendship and character and this must never change. We also have some things to do to preserve our club and go forward so we remain relevant in the future. You have selected people that you can trust as members of your Board of By Commodore Bob Beck Directors and I am looking forward to working with Craig and Gary on the Bridge as we address issues and concerns in the coming year. Maybe a brief note about my own particular style, and likes and dislikes, would be helpful to you, especially considering I am from Bakersfield... I like ideas that are presented with a solution or show constructive thought. I don t like letters addressed to the Board that criticize folks versus issues, or that were first not discussed verbally with the Bridge or management as input or for correction. Threatening communication of any type just hurts everyone and accomplishes nothing and will not rise to the top of my list and probably will be summarily dismissed. I like to discuss ideas that challenge my own beliefs. That is how we grow. I love champions who participate and take charge. Sure they can run over the top of us at times, exceed their authority and leave a little bit of destruction in their path, but man do they keep the ball rolling. Good management accepts champions and gently manages the results. I like doers. The Ventura Yacht Club is owned by you, the members. It runs through committees in which every individual can participate. Our meals and socials help fund activities and harbor activities assures a spot at the political table. 7 From the Commodore Continued from page 4 So here are some thoughts we might consider. We are a private club, specifically a yacht club. We are not a bar at the beach, nor a social club for gadabouts. We are not a means for cheap boat storage, nor a place for a free meal. Of course, the club has all these things and I for one thoroughly enjoy the meals, social activities and even have a drink now and again, but those things are not why we belong to the Ventura Yacht Club. If this is true, then shouldn t we consider vetting membership applications to determine if the applicant truly is interested in things of the sea, is willing to participate in our activities and is of good character. Shouldn t we ask them what areas of the club they are personally interested in and where they willing to participate? If we truly believe you get the most out of any group through these activities maybe we should assign them a committee or function that fits their interests as a requirement for the first two years. We have a long waiting list for boat slips. We charge, by our by-laws, substantially less than other slips in the harbor. Should this be a parking place for forgotten joys of the past, where boats decaying from lack of use occupying space that another active member might use? Ok, you get the drift but really I am most excited by the activities, cruises and being with friends during the coming year is going to be a fun year where we move forward while preserving the past and hopefully increase the benefit of ownership to everyone. Tuesday evening as the evacuees filtered down to the club, it wasn t long before VYC had transformed itself into a bustling emergency shelter. I can t tell you how good it felt to have water between us and the fire. Our safe haven grew and grew. As dinner time approached the clubhouse filled with evacuees in shock. Our gracious Commodore Beck opened his wallet and made sure everyone was fed. We received so many offers for housing it was almost overwhelming. We can t even begin to think of going through this without all of you. Wednesday s report relayed from the scene confirmed our worse fears. About one third of the homes in Clearpoint are gone, including the Martin s and ours. On December 6, everything changed for Ventura. Our lives and our city will forever be viewed as before, or after the fire. We have been brought to tears by the outpouring of love and support from our club, and community. We will rebuild. 8 A Gala Change of Command Photos by Flash Wheeler full house was on hand at the A club s Change of Command dinner in December. Bob Beck was sworn in as the incoming Commodore, joined by Craig Leverault as Vice Commodore and Gary Wolfe as Rear Commodore. Also sworn in were new Directors for 2018, Joel Bozarth and Miguel Valdes. John Sugden, whose term ended in December was reelected. Outgoing Directors were Commodore Jan Lawson and Mike Doman. Numerous awards, both serious and some a bit humorous were presented: u Rafael Francke was given the most valuable member award. u Neil Fraser received the Merrill C. Allyn Award. u Lorna Londborg received the Burgee of Merit. u Dean Prophet received the Seamanship Trophy. Continued on page 9 8 VYC Forecast

In addition to Beck, Leverault and Wolfe, the Board of Directors for 2018 consist of Christina Baum, Bozarth, Judy Cunningham, Belinda Del Pesco, Francke, Fraser, Prophet, Sugden and Valdes. 10 Kids Decorate the Tree On November 26 VYC hosted the annual Kids Decorate the Tree event chaired by Diane Shankwiler and Doug Farrel. Two of the Wheeler s great grandchildren attended the event. Diane was amazing. She found materials at The Dollar Store that were easy and fun for the kids (of all ages) to use. It s hard to imagine the hours she spent cutting apart and sorting Mardi Gras beads. No doubt her hands were sore by the time she finished. With huge smiles, she and Doug helped the kids assemble absolutely beautiful ornaments. Members have been directly affected by losing their homes, others can still not return to their homes. I am grateful that during this time of need the Ventura Yacht Club was able to provide some solace and comfort to those members. Many members have called asking how they can help, offering housing, helping with pot lucks and BBQs. I am proud to be associated with this yacht club that has so many caring members. Once again you have By Dotty Wheeler Office Waves take home. It was so much fun to do and had such a rewarding result that adults joined in. One father explained I m just helping my kid! The tree is lovely. Diane and Doug deserve a big job well done, and have agreed to Chair the event again next year! Yea! Be sure to admire the little tree by the elevator. By Yacht Club Manager Anthony Jesu proved that Ventura Yacht Club is a family and a very special place. On a lighter note, I am looking forward to a wonderful New Year! On behalf of all the staff we are anxious to work hard and improve our service to all the members. 11 Big Plans for Cruiser Navigators new boating A experience is scheduled for Ventura Yacht Club in The Santa Barbara Channel Cruiser Association (SBCCA) is planning an active season of rallies for both power and powered sail participants. These rallies are fun, competitive and provide a great opportunity to learn your boat and refine your navigation skills. Rallies conducted by the SBCCA will be open to all interested boaters power or sail. We are planning three formats; single event, destination event, and Wet Wednesday format. There are seven single event rallies scheduled in the VYC master calendar. These will be at least 12 miles long, permit the use of any navigation instruments (analog or electronic), and no speed limitations. A plot of the rally course and any specific sea or land marks will be provided. A meeting will take place prior to the rally start where predicted performance (log) will be submitted by the skipper. Each participant will be scored by an onboard observer. The winner based on the execution closest to the skipper s predictions, and prizes awarded at a social hour the afternoon of the rally. Destination event rallies will be scheduled in conjunction with VYC club cruises. The format: start time, course, skipper's meeting and awards meeting will be tailored to the destination. The Wet Wednesday rally will be conducted in parallel with the normal VYC sail racing activity. These events will be scored informally, and designed to be a fun learning experience. It is also another reason to enjoy the Wednesday meal service at the club. It is hard to think about the Bristol Boat competition but it will happen this year, after this fire has been extinguished. Because of the fire all VYC members will need to do some serious boat cleaning. What a great opportunity to enter the Bristol Boat Competition right before Opening Day in March! I am pleased to chair the event this year and I need members who will enter their boat, some judges to decide who the winners are and prizes. 13 You ve Got a Friend VYC Members Pull Together in Fire s Wake Seven years ago, Garrett and I were traumatized when at 4:55 p.m. on a Friday he was laid off from his job with no definite answer as to when he d be re-hired. It was the Friday of Labor Day weekend and we were left with that chin-on-the-floor feeling. It didn t take us long to decide to sell everything we had and move aboard our Catalina 30 at VYC. After all, the one thing that brought us more joy than anything was cruising our boat and being a part of the VYC family, and we weren t willing to give that up. We may have been a little crazy, but the one thing we are most grateful for these seven years later, is having had this incredibly strong VYC community in which to raise our two kids. That community has perhaps come together to support our members in need now more than ever. On Monday (December 5) night, east winds were howling and the beginnings of the Thomas fire raged through Santa Paula into Ventura and began to wreak havoc on our city. By 10:30 at night, parts of eastern Ventura and the foothills were being evacuated, and by the wee hours of Tuesday morning, several VYC members who live in the Clearpoint, Ondulondo, and other hillside neighborhoods to the west, were forced from their homes. Several of them came to VYC and their boats to seek refuge. By sunrise Tuesday morning, VYC power had been restored and conversations with current live-aboards and evacuees raised questions of whether homes were left standing, whether By Christina Baum winds would subside and just how much loss and devastation Ventura would face. 14 Martin had already had word their house was gone, Craig and Doris Leverault didn t have immediate confirmation, but were almost certain theirs was as well (that fact, unfortunately, would be confirmed a couple hours later), Don Clark and Belinda DelPesco waited to evacuate until their 92- year-old neighbor s family were able to get to her, and Wally and Laurie Rutledge actually had to live through hearing they had lost their house, then have that retracted, then hearing a second time it was gone, then finally finding out the truth that it did, in fact, survive. But survival is a funny term; while houses may be left standing, the owners of said houses may be evacuated indefinitely. And that is hard to come to terms with. Several additional members from the foothills, Oakview and Ojai, including the Schofields, the Hesters, the Berrys, and the Kutchmas, joined the evacuees over the day and into the next. So what did the rest of the VYC members come together to do? Take care of our friends, of course! That first Tuesday, our regular potluck was transformed into a service for those evacuees. With more in attendance than usual, Anthony graciously allowed us to convene upstairs and members brought enough food and drink for an army. The following night, Anthony supplied pizza, beer and wine and another potluck-style evening ensued. So many members attended in support that Bob Beck called and had us order more pizza on his dime! Thursday evening, Jan Hester put out the word that she and Floyd would host a cheese and cracker happy hour You ve Got a Friend Continued from page 13 on the patio. What a joy and relief it was to see our members coming together to support, talk to, and cry with those who were feeling such loss. The generosity didn t stop there the following Tuesday night, Commodore Bob Beck sent out an to his BBQ Crew asking them to come together to cook up chicken and hot links in addition to our standard potluck. Again, the attendance rivaled the likes of any Friday night dinner at the club. In talking to those who are experiencing the effects of the Thomas Fire firsthand, all had a common sentiment: They feel incredibly blessed to be a part of the VYC family. And who could disagree? It is wonderful to be a part of a true community one with members who can laugh and cry together; celebrate and grieve together. To our members who are dealing with this Thomas Fire directly, we are here for you you ve got a friend. No, you ve got a community of friends! 14 VYC Forecast

15 VYC Juniors Compete at L.A. Harbor There were about 75 Optimist sailors including five VYC Juniors that sailed in the Holiday Regatta at Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club December 2-3, and two of our kids won trophies. All five VYC Juniors sailed in the Champs Fleet which had 49 contestants. Ian Clayton and Ashley Kaller each were sailing in Champs for the first time. It s a big step to move up from Green Fleet but both of them sailed well and beat several boats. I m sure they learned a lot and now they know what the next level is like. Ian finished 46 th and Ashley was 42 nd. Sydney Brea won the third race of the regatta by so much that it was hard to show it with a picture. She was probably about 200 yards ahead. It was her first victory in a Carrie Series race. She finished 17 th overall. Jack Pointer was close to getting a trophy at our Fall regatta but just missed, this time was different. He battled with two other By Ryan Cox Sydney Brea won the third race by a huge margin. White Fleet sailors (10 and under) all regatta and ended up a close third in White Fleet and 23 rd overall. Jack has been working really hard and it s starting to show. Carter Cox had a couple tough races to end Saturday but sailed great on Sunday. He moved up from 10 th to 5 th overall on Sunday. 17 Happy New Year! 2017 was a fun year at VYC. Now its time to make plans for But first, let's review our December events. The Social Committee did a beautiful job decorating the club for the holidays, led by Sandy Swanson and Lorna Londborg. Diane Shankwiler did an outstanding job with the children's party. She had interesting projects that the children took to immediately, making several ornaments to decorate their tree. Thank you also to Doug Farrel, Diane's very competent helper, and Flash Wheeler for taking pictures. Dec 2 was the Change of Command Ball an annual event when club members come together to recognize and support our 2018 club leadership team! Brilliantly chaired by Mary Beck, this celebratory party was beautiful and the perfect nautical venue for our 2018 Commodore, Bob Beck. Dec 15 and 16 was the Parade of Lights. This was a festive family oriented event with Santa's arrival on Saturday night. The theme this year was When you wish upon a star." December 31, VYC hosted a New York New Year's Eve. It was a night of celebration and entertainment with Steve Woods and his musical guests, our own commodore Bob Beck and friends. Thank you Mary for chairing this event. The 2018 Social Committee will be co-chaired by Sue Gentzle and Lorna Londborg with the support of a committee of dedicated VYC ladies. 19 VYC Celebrating Eightieth Anniversary in Part 1 In recognition of the 80 th Anniversary of the founding of the Ventura Yacht Club, the history articles appearing in The Forecast over the next several months will tell the story of the birth and growth of the organization. As I start this article a strange feeling came over me as I realized that the club was only ten years old when I became a Junior Member in Further, that I had been hanging around the boat house at the Ventura Pier and participating in club activities several years prior to joining. In addition to some 70 years of first-hand experience I will be making use of the Minute Book containing club minutes from November 1940 through September 1953, The Forecast from 1940 forward and various photos from my collection. It all began in 1938 when an enthusiastic group of some 50 southern Ventura County citizens organized the Ventura County Boat Club (VCBC). Most of these members lived in and around the cities of Ventura and Oxnard with a few from Ojai and the Somis area. There were farmers, blue and white-collar workers with diverse occupations but all were interested in boats and boating. Membership fees in 1940 were: Admission Fees $2.50, and Annual Dues $2.50 per year. Before the purpose of the club is reviewed it would be well to review the lack of boating facilities in the County. There were no small boat harbors at Ventura or Oxnard (Channel Islands) and no inland lakes such By Donald F. Harbor Blvd did not exist in the 1940s when the lake was a club boating venue. The lake, located south of the Gonzales Road intersection, is now a wildlife refuge and a part of McGrath State Beach. 20 VYC Eightieth Anniversary in 2018 Continued from page 19 yet completed. The total population of Ventura County was less than 69,000; whereas in 2017 the total population was 825,000. The purposes of the club, as stated in part in the Articles of Incorporation approved November 15, 1940, are: To promote all forms of boating in Ventura County; to aid in the provision of facilities for the use of boats and to aid in securing waters on which boats may be operated---; to improve McGrath Lake---so that it will be suitable for use as a place for boating and boat races; and to foster a closer feeling of fellowship---; to organize---and operate boat races--, and generally do all things ---that may aid in promoting interest in boats and boating. Starting in 1940, improvements were in fact made to McGrath Lake, located one-half mile north of the Mandalay power plant. Photo 1 shows a more recent aerial photo of the lake. The improvements included access roads, launching ramp and removing snags from the lake. This work was done by member volunteers. Farmer members did the tractor work. To encourage member participation and raise funds for materials, the club adopted a Dollar-Work-Day Plan. Members not appearing for a designated work day were assessed one dollar. The plan was successful, the improvements were completed and sailing and speedboat races were conducted at McGrath Lake through the 40s except for suspension during World War II because of restricted access to the shoreline site. Photo 4: These were the club built slips at the Hueneme Harbor in Monthly slip fees were $0.25 per foot of boat length. The Hueneme Harbor was completed in 1940, and included facilities for cargo shipping only. The club in January 1941 made application to secure a lease land and water areas on which to construct some slip and mooring facilities for small boats. By April 1941 they had a lease in hand. The rent was $150 per year. By June 24, 1941 fourteen pilings had been driven. It is amazing what was accomplished in this time span when compared to today s bureaucratic world. 29 Membership Report As 2017 comes to an end our club membership remains strong in both number and participation. This has been a year touched with heartache. Beloved members have died including our Membership Committee Chair Gay Garabedian. All will be deeply missed and never forgotten. The recent fire has disrupted lives, destroying member s homes By Carolyn Cahn and leaving many displaced. Throughout this misfortune club members have circled the boats offering their support. A new year is here with a full calendar of club activities scheduled. Membership continues to grow. We are happy to welcome our recent additions John, Diane and Josh Brooks; and Thomas Henderson. John, Diane and Josh Brooks New Trial members John is semiretired from the film industry, recently working in 3-D films and prior to that underwater photography and nature documentaries. He grew up in Florida and spent summers in Maine, where he was part of an elite youth sailing team. He built, chartered and loved on a 36 catamaran in the Bahamas for several years while working as a scuba diving instructor. Diane was scuba certified while going to college at UCSB, which led to a summer job on a dive boat and then to a career as a boat captain for the Channel Islands National Park. She and John met on a cave diving project for the park service. Josh was born in 2000 and spent his first summer of sailing camp at VYC when he was 8. He was scuba certified at age 12. He is now lucky enough to sail with Team Rival on Wet Wednesdays. The Brooks are all avid divers and owned the powerboat Location before selling it to the Smasheys, becoming great friends in the process. VYC Forecast 29

38 Sail Racing Report Fat Tuesday Tops in ASBCYC and County High Points By Denny Dwire Carlos Brea s Schock 30, Fat Tuesday, won the Association of Santa Barbara Channel High Point Series for Fat Tuesday raced in seven of the 10 ASBCYC races, scoring 16 points. Placing second, two points behind, was Mike Leary s J-30, Pangea. Brea and Leary are members of Ventura Yacht Club. Other high scorers were Sundowner, skippered by Dirk Freeland of Santa Barbara Yacht Club, 10 points; Epic, skippered by Vance Newell of SBYC, 9; Velero, Brent Swanson, CIYC, 9; Warrior, Laura Schlessinger, SBYC, 9; WildFlyer, John Roland, VSC, 9; Troublemaker, Rod Abbott, AYC, 8; Rock n Roll, Bernard Girod, SBYC, 7. Carlos and Fat Tuesday also won the 2017 County High Points Series. Four of the top five boats are from Ventura Yacht Club. Fat Tuesday sailed in 19 of the 20 High Point races, scoring 45 points and averaging 2.4 points per race. Pangea, a J-30 skippered by Mike Leary, placed second with 36 points, averaging 5.1 points per race. Brea and Higson will be presented with the perpetual trophy from the April 7 High Points sponsors, Richard and Paula Sharpe, on Feb.10 at the skippers meeting of the first race of the June 9 Spring Series, hosted by Pierpont Bay Yacht Club. In addition to Fat Tuesday, others receiving series trophies will July 7 be Pangea, Gumbercules, Rival and Wai Lani. A special trophy will be awarded to Brent Swanson, skipper of Velero, for sailing the most races while finishing outside the top five. The 2018 High Point Series will consist of 20 races, 10 from each of the county s two pleasurecraft harbors. 40 VYC Saturday Night Presentations Anacapa Island History on Jan. 13 We begin the 2018 season on Jan. 13, with a presentation about the history of Anacapa Island. Spend an evening with cultural anthropologist and author, Marla Daily of the Santa Cruz Island Foundation, who has spent her career researching the histories of all eight California Channel Islands. The California Historical Society bestowed upon Daily its Distinguished Service Award for her extraordinary service and dedicated efforts in preserving Channel Islands history. Future presentations this year include a trip to Cuba, a cruise to the Delta, Sistership recap of the 2017 R2A- experience, a sail on the San Salvador, sailing the south Atlantic on a catamaran, cruising the south Pacific. There are a few open dates if you would like to share your boating experience of your favorite location to our members. Hope to see you at our first presentation of the year. VYC Community Services Report December 4, 2017 a huge firestorm raged through our town and changed Ventura forever. Out of these ashes emerged a calling to Ventura Yacht Club to be a true resource for our community. Immediately, we responded by tending to our own members who needed meals, information and emotional support. We will continue to serve them long after this tragic disaster and will reach out to other fire victims in the Ventura community. Traditionally, Ventura Yacht Club has contributed in November to the local FOOD SHARE program. This year our members generously donated over 280 lbs of food. In December, we worked with TOYS FOR TOTS who distributed over forty toys to local needy children. We were told more By Diane Sanson toys were needed due to the fires in Ventura County, and therefore we extend our time to collect toys. Our goal for 2018 is to connect with local community agencies and offer them our resources and skills. We appreciate any suggestions for project ideas and invite new members to serve on our team. 42 Marina Management Report Accomplishments for 2017 Your marina management committee accomplished quite a lot this year. First and foremost was ensuring that the budget for marina replacement was accurate, adequately funded and consistent with the realistic lifetime of the current docks. To this end, we researched current construction costs based on similar concrete dock construction as that used for our recent E dock addition. We contracted an outside company that specializes in preparing reserve studies to complete a completely new reserve study for VYC. Lastly, based on the estimates from the reserve study, we raised dues this last year to fund the effort adequately. The updated reserve study confirms that we are in good shape financially to replace B and D docks in about 5-6 years. Much needed maintenance on our dry storage hoist was completed this last spring. Lots of degreasing, rust removal, priming and painting was accomplished by lot of member volunteers. The lift cable and support cables were all replaced. Everything was greased and lubricated. New covers for the motors and gearboxes were constructed from stainless plates. We have a bit more to update on the electrical side. We have been wrestling with the problem of what to do about derelict, abandoned, and very poorly maintained vessels in the VYC marina. Marina management By Port Captain Jeff Beller will present a plan to the Board of Directors at their January meeting. It turns out that most of what we need is already in place in our dock rules and berth rental agreements. Berth tenants will be expected to keep their slip payments and other account balances current. Vessels must be maintained to prevent potential sinking and pollution incidents, and are expected to be kept clean (top and bottom) and useable. Vessels that show obvious signs of neglect may be subject to a basic inspection to evaluate seaworthiness. Vessels not meeting these basic criteria likely will be evicted if the owners do not correct the problems. The goals are to protect VYC and its members from incurring potentially large costs to deal with these problem vessels and also to make our valuable slips available to members who will actually use and care for their yachts.
