We could simply do a dinner but we would like ideas for some fund raisers too. How about silent auctions, Chinese auctions or 50/50 raffles? Board of Director s Notes The November 14 meeting will be the last meeting of the year at Marengo. The December 12 meeting and election for the Board of Directors will be at the Iron Skillet at Thruway exit 41 Waterloo and Clyde. They will do the lunch buffet for $ 9.39 if we Tony Mesolella, aka the nominating committee, has found people willing to run for all the positions on the Board of Directors but there still is time if you want to run. We would like everyone who is running for elections this year to provide a paragraph describing yourself and explaining why you want to run for the Board. We need to document budget components and progress on long-planning goals better. Roger Caiazza has offered to prepare that report but will need to work with Committee Chairs to get the necessary information. This information has to be available for Board Approval at the January 2016 meeting. Susie Caiazza has volunteered to chair the 50 th Anniversary event August 4-7, We have some volunteers but will need more as plans evolve. At this point please let her know if you have any ideas or want to join the Committee. With the good weather there has been notable progress on various projects. Jack Wylie coordinated the completion of the trim on the engine house and gauge one storage building. Ted Taylor has made progress on the parallel track up the hill. Guy and the One Inch track gang have cleared the interchange area and added track to the industrial area. Meanwhile others have the club just about ready for winter.

Clubhouse Expansion Soon after the survey for the clubhouse expansion was completed and the results presented the red shed was demolished and perceptions changed. In particular when the shed was gone many people remarked that the openness of the area east of the existing clubhouse was very nice. As a result, thoughts turned to ways to preserve that rather than simply extending the clubhouse to the east. The majority of the club wanted to move the shop out of the clubhouse so that we could remodel it, supported the idea of moving the kitchen to the area where the garage door is located now, putting a door on the east end of the clubhouse and providing some kind of covered area for picnic tables on the east end. Those objectives could be met by a different approach. If we build a separate building for the shop somewhere else, say for example where the containers are now, in the area between the 7 ¼ gauge transfer table and steaming bays and the main line or at the west end of the engine house. If we built a covered pavilion at the east end of the club house we could provide a covered area and keep the open feeling of that area. In any event we need specific proposals for the building expansion objectives.

He is home and doing rehab to learn to deal with blindness. Bob Hoffman had pneumonia and was in RGH for three weeks but is back in Hill Haven nursing home. Club 7 ¼ engines: Randy Taylor The Erie loco needs work on the hydraulic pump. During open house it struggled up the hill, but was not slipping or speeding up. Grounds: Dick Smock-all good Electrical: Dave Wierowski OK the lockouts on the panel are working well Old Business Long term planning anything new to bring to the Board? o Bring to the BOD any projects you wish to do, the plans should be in writing, detailed with cost estimates broken down, so it can be coordinated into the long range plans. New Business 50 th anniversary August 4,5,6,7, 2019 o Chairperson Susie Caiazza Helpers volunteered to date: Paul Pontarelli, Tom Pierson, Jon Scaptura, and Stacy (Scaptura) Denisi. All club members are needed for ideas. We only get to do this once. There is a lot to accomplish starting with early save this date Flyers to individuals in the different clubs so they can help promote the event. Getting hotel information group rates detailed direction from the hotels and back to. Meals for Friday Saturday how many are we supplying. Where would be put visiting campers, do they get the prime spots and our members go to the parking lot by the station? This is only a small percentage of what will need to be done. Ideas can be sent through the website for now. Open House o The open house was a success. We did our best to accommodate all who attended. We have found out that we need to put in writing who are the people in charge of certain areas and operations. This pamphlet would be handed out to all workers and visitors from other clubs. 4 o We need to move the porta potty in line with trees to open up more parking. Ed said fine we just need to move the cone that is place there for the drop. o The snow fence posts on the road over the culvert need to be moved because the turn is too tight when leaving the parking area. o Reggie needs to look at the culvert, it needs some visual improvement. o The entrance from the road needs to be widened to a width of 15 feet so we can get people off the road and get the visitors out of the parking area at the same time. Budget for 2016 o New budgets for 2016 in January. They need to be specific. Projects list and cost estimates. o Once the club budget is set, you still need pre-approval before purchasing any material. o Once the BOD approved the purchase of material if must be bought by September or an extension request would be required. If the materials are not purchased by December of the current budget year, th o e process will need to start over in the new fiscal year. o Approval for money does not roll over to the new fiscal year. o We should set up a project form, similar to a building permit for project request. Something that can fill in the blanks. March Dinner o In the Pop Valve we need in BIG BOLD LETTERS the need for ideas for the March dinner. Include a silent auction and Chinese auction (chinese auctions could be a basket filled with chocolate items, then we sell tickets and then the buyer put the tickets into a bowl in front of the items) The winning ticket is drawn from the bowl. 4. We could also sell do 50/50 raffles Other o Fire extinguishers need to be collected and put in the club house. o Water blow down Reggie will be taking over for Ed. o The tunnel should arrive Oct 24 it is about 900 pounds per section. o Nominations there is someone for all slots o Campers you may bring them in April; make sure they are kept presentable and the lawn mowed. Please un-hook water when you are not here and they need to leave after Columbus Day. 7 -A Lesson in Live Steam- By John Le Forestier During the weekend of Sept. 26, The Finger Lakes Live Steamers held the second of their twice-yearly open houses. These events are remarkably well-attended. The club does not advertise; people come from miles around. My friend Fred and I are members of this club. We spent four delightful and very full days with our southern neighbours. The event was a wonderful opportunity for the young and the not so young to experience the spectacle that, magic-like, turns a pile of burning black rocks into powerful forward momentum. On the right you will see Al Swackhamer s North Western Pacific sitting on the ready track prior to steamup. Follow along as she is prepared for her first run of the day. There can be no steam without water! Al s assistant, Hank Mastalski,, attaches the pipe that will fill the boiler. Al lubricates the actuator for the valve motion which is accessed from underneath the engine.

8 Hank fills the tender. Al has more greasing to do down there. Hank begins oiling the drive rods. Now Hank oils the valve motion while Al greases the piston rods and the crosshead guides.

9 Al takes loving care of his engine. Here he is carefully wiping off excess grease. Meanwhile Hank is back at the tender, making certain that the truck journals are well supplied with oil. A special mix of coal from a supplier in Buffalo fills an aluminum box which fits inside the tender. Al starts the fire with charcoal scooped from a coffee can and barbecue starter fluid. Compressed air is available at the steaming tracks to provide a good draft when the engines are standing and still cold.

Soon the charcoal bed is blazing hot. Al has placed the aluminum box into the tender and he begins stoking with coal.

In about five minutes it will read 40-50 pounds. At this point the compressed air will be removed, for the draft will then be self-sustaining.

At this temperature the rapid expansion of steam in the cylinders is what drives the locomotive.
