Spring has come and work has started at Marengo so don t forget to come to the next meeting of the year at the clubhouse on Saturday May 8 at 12:30 PM. Number 376 April 2010 Editor: Roger Caiazza Publisher: Ted Taylor Contributors: FLLS Members President s Column Jack Wylie We are going to make changes to the Pop Valve distribution to try to save $100 per mailed edition. We will minimize the number of mailed editions but offer more electronic editions. The Board welcomes any suggestions or comments on this plan. Remember that you can access the Pop Valve from the web site any time you get on a computer with internet access. Don t forget the Memorial Day weekend Saturday/Sunday run days at the club. There will be people camping and Ed McConnell has offered to be a contact if anyone is interested. We will also have a pass the plate dinner on Saturday night. Harold Crouch Award We instituted an award in memory of Harold Crouch for outstanding service to the club this year. The first recipient, Ed McConnell was honored with a certificate of appreciation for all the work he has done for the club during his many years on the Board of Directors. We also will have a plaque installed at the club house noting those members who receive the award. Figure 1: FLLS Board awards Ed McConnell the Harold Crouch award for outstanding service. 3 Locomotive For Sale 1.5 scale, 7.25 Gauge Oil Fired Pacific For Information contact Ed McConnell At: or Locomotive will be under steam Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday and Sunday at the Finger Lakes Live Steamers track F.L.L.S. Business Meeting April 10, 2010, Marengo, NY Meeting called to order by President Jack Wylie at 12:18 PM Treasurer: Tim Guenther: March beginning balance $7,586.32, Income $3, Expenses $1,410.21, and Ending balance $10, $1358 was earned at the auction and the dinner cost $10 more than we paid in. There was a suggestion to send out the membership card mailing and the dinner information with the Pop Valve at the same time. Main expense this month was sales tax. Good & Welfare: Hank took Bob Hoffman out to eat recently. Bob is getting around better but is still moving slow after his stroke. He has moved back home. Ed passed around the emergency contact list for updates. If you haven t done so already please check the information and get it updated. Phone is available in the cabinet for emergency calls. Ed will check on call service contract. Gauge One: Skip Enck donated Gauge One track. There is a work list in the Storage Building. Bridges will be installed soon and the pond will be uncovered later.

One-Inch: Guy has begun spot replacement of ties. The big job this year will be dressing up the ballast. Probably need some ties for the season and there are potential plans for a couple more passenger sidings. Guy is working on the signaling system but has run into electrical problems. Steve is planning to have the transfer table functional by the end of June. Paul is going to work on it as part of his Eagle Scout project. Inch & Half: The original plan was to install the storage shed on the triangle inside the engine house wye but there also is a plan to install new track in that area too. We need to keep in mind that both projects could go in the same place. Bob noted that the damaged rail has been removed. The track going through the woods has been rebuilt with plastic ties. Will start re-laying more track in the southwest corner as the next project. Hank talked about replacing ties for the worst turnout. We need ten or so more ground throws. We discussed the materials, the diagram, materials, and construction. We need the electrical weather enclosure for the turnout into the passenger loading station.. One of the turnouts needs a major re-build. Web Page: Some delays because of computer problems. Library: Don Jermyn: Don and Tim are looking into different storage options for books and other material in the club house. Please don t throw out the phone books. Grounds: Dick asked folks to stay off the grass until things dry up.. Hank and Mike will do general weed killing in early May. The broken electrical line to the container needs to be fixed. Club House: We have a proposal to install a metal roof for $2,465 from one of the Amish. The Board recommended that we go ahead and the membership voted to approve. For this price the club will provide manual labor support as needed. Diesels: Hank is only planning to do standard maintenance this year and has plans to upgrade the shafts to reduce potential problems. If the diagnostic work uncovers problems then there may be some heavy maintenance work necessary. Skip offered to replace the 5/8 shafts if someone can find them. There is potential to use a different size shaft but mating up is an issue. Car Barn: Storage has been added to the car barn. Ed is changed the truck pins so they are more flexible on one of the cars that had problems. We will see if car A-2 runs better this year. Please mark all your equipment to be sure it is labeled and consistent with your equipment list. Ted Taylor and many others have been working in the woods April 5, 2010 (Photo by Ed McConnell) Hank Mastalski still wants to proceed with his track extension project. He asked if it was OK to take fill and everyone agreed. His

contact for the plastic ties has agreed to provide more. Small Equipment: Reggie be maintaining the equipment this year. Peter has offered to help Reggie with the belt on the John Deere. Pop Valve: Roger Caiazza/Ted Taylor: Members were asked if there were any concerns with the plan to try to reduce the number of paper copies. We will try to fill in with a monthly electronic version for the months when there isn t a paper copy. Suggestion was made to print out some copies of the electronic version to have available at the club. Please be sure that you have your addresses updated with Tim so that he can keep the master mailing list and web page up to date. There was a suggestion to also run off copies of the master mailing list to have available at the club. Finally we need to get blank copies of the equipment list available for use. Old Business Fire Extinguishers: Annual checkup was completed, some had to be re-charged, and hangers for all have been provided. Ed picked up some new signs. They will be inventoried. The One Inch building needs an extinguisher. Engine House: Al is putting the shelves up in number six bay. There are some maintenance items that should be addressed, especially on the west wall. New Business Jeff Webster from the Sodus recreational program asked to come sometime this summer with 20 kids. We will invite them on a Wednesday in July after checking on their liability insurance. Coordinator is needed for show displays. The suggestion was made to get a portable DVD player for use at the shows and to make up videos showcasing each layout to supplement the Anniversary DVD. It was also suggested to use this format for safety training. Reggie and Hank need to get together for long term planning. Don Jermyn is starting to put together documentation for equipment built so reference data will be available. If you have information please contact Don No other business brought forth. Meeting adjourned at 1:42 PM. Submitted by Roger Caiazza, Secretary Finger Lakes Live Steamers Business Meeting February 13, 2010 LA&L Railroad Meeting called to order by President Jack Wylie at 12:44 pm. Treasurers report, Tim. Start $ ; end balance = $ members have renewed so far. Good & Welfare: Bob H. moved to the Jewish Home on Winton Rd for rehab. There has been a huge improvement, now he is walking with a walker. Call him on his cell phone. John's Schmitt s father, Bill Schmitt, passed away earlier this month. If you want to send

condolences to the Schmitt Family, their address is 85 Tamarack St, Rochester, NY /4 Gauge, Bob: Ties for woods Ok, plastic ties will be cut. Ground throws to be made for switches. The ladder in the yard has been laid out. Safety, Ed: Ed will help Bob H. We will start paying for fire extinguisher maintenance. Engine House: Al Francis is working on shelves for Bay #6 and will repair the siding this year. The storage shed will be built on the triangle inside the engine house wye. John Spencer, Ed & Jack will work on the air compressor. Roof we will get prices in the Spring. Work to be done later in the year depending on how well we do in June. Notices were sent out for the March dinner. They are due March 1 st. Keep records of owner s equipment at the club up to date. Thanks for donations to pay for the pizza (we took in more than it cost). Thanks to the LA&L railroad & Rick Rubino for hosting the meeting. Adjourned at 1:20 pm. Notes taken by Tim Guenther in Roger s absence. 40 th Anniversary DVD Dave Wierowski has been working on the DVD and reports: This has been a larger project than I ever expected it would be. There are so many good photos from all the contributors, that it has been quite a task to filter out the good from the not so good. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel on this. My daughter is also ready for me to submit the raw photos, so she can locate them onto the storyboard selections so as to make for smooth transitions. The plan is to have 2 sections on the DVD. One a slide show with 5 chapters the viewer can select, in 10 year segments, and a video section that will highlight some of the past as well as the 40th Anniversary. New business: Truck pin broke on one of the aluminum riding cars. They need more flexibility. Ed, Bill Miner and Hank are working on a new design and getting them fixed. Don Jermyn proposed that we keep a record in the library of locomotives built or owned by club members. It should include photos, specs, and history of each engine. Don volunteered to head up this project. First operations of the year on Gauge One were on April 24, 2010 (Photo by Ed McConnell)

Finger Lakes Live Steamer's Track Damaged - Clippings from Clyde column from the Wayne County Star by Lois Benning. The Finger Lakes Live Steamers is a group of individuals who enjoy building and running scale model railroads. Many of the Wayne County Star readers have enjoyed taking a ride on the scale model trains at their Spring and Fall Open Houses which are open to the public. Many families come back each year and bring their friends and families and are welcomed by the members of the club. Recently, they had some extensive damage to the tracks caused by snowmobilers riding their machines on their property without regard to possible damage they could cause. The damaged track is along Clyde-Marengo Road at the west end of the property. Snowmobilers cross their property from the lot to the east following the tracks and then go back up onto the road. Most snowmobilers respect the property of others and those belonging to clubs maintain their own trails for the enjoyment of their members so that this type of damage does not occur. The stretch of track that has been damaged will have to be completely replaced as it is beyond repair. This has caused additional expense for the club members and time will have to be spent repairing the track that the members can't afford to use as they get everything up and running for their upcoming Spring Open House which will be held June The club is always open to new members who are interested in learning more about their hobby and track work.

Tool Glossary Part 1 DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it. WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, "Oh, s***!" SKILL SAW: A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short. PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters. BELT SANDER: An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs. available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand. OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub out of which you want to remove a bearing race. TABLE SAW: A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity. HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper. BAND SAW: A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut good aluminum sheets into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the trash can after you cut on the inside of the line instead of the outside edge. HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes. VISE-GRIPS: Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is Hank Mastalski working on turnout in 7 ¼ yard (Photo by Ed McConnell
