July 2018 Volume 30, Issue 7 The President s Corner by Chuck Valley Rolling along through the hot and sometimes stormy Summer of 2018, in the month of June we enjoyed several activities including a Drive & Dine with the Historical House Tour at Adena Mansion just outside of Chillicothe hosted by Tony and Jeanne Zlocki, Concours de Elegance in Cincinnati hosted by Tim Howard, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Tour Part II overnighter hosted by Chuck and Pat Valley, the Drive & Dine Cobra Show in London hosted by Tim Howard, and wrapping up the June fun was the Poolside Cookout hosted by Christy and Scott Haynes. Upcoming in July is of course the club s participation in the Fairborn and Beavercreek 4 th of July parades. Those coming to the Fairborn parade, start lining up at Jeff Schmitt s Fairborn by 9:00am. Parade begins at 10:00am, followed by a trip to Norma and Dan Kirkpatrick s at 1:00pm for the cookout. Bring a side dish to share. Then those participating in the Beavercreek Parade (first time for the MVMC that I know of) will line up on the north side of Meadowbridge Drive near PNC Bank and Shoup Park by 5:00pm. The parade begins at 6:00pm. Beavercreek is psyched that we will have at least 7 of our Miatas (the more the better) to drive the local dignitaries! After the Beavercreek Parade, we are invited back to the Kirkpatrick s for leftover ribs, burgers and such, then stay put and watch the fireworks at Community Park from the Kirkpatrick s great vantage point! Those that have volunteered to be on the 25 th Anniversary of the Miami Valley Miata Club will need to show up at 5:30p Tues, July 10 th at Panera at 6130 Wilmington Pike, Dayton. This is normally our Executive Committee Meeting held every other month. The MVMC 25 th Anniversary Committee needs to be thinking about location, agenda ideas, date, and special invitees. On Saturday July 14 th we will be heading back to the Plain Folk Cafe hosted by Dave and Peggy Berry. You will find a complement of very tasty cheese sandwiches and soups at this quaint, out-of-the-way, familyrun shop. Finally, show up at the Cars & Coffee at Austin Landing on July 21 st and 28 th. You may see a classic car from your youth, a few Lamborghinis, or The Green Monster owned by none other than our tech director Tim Howard, who by the way, won the Peoples Choice award at the recent Voss Hoss Cruise-In! Be sure to check and keep up with the event calendar for upcoming July events. Again, participate while your good health allows; you ll get more out of your club and build some good memories along the way! It beats cleaning the house or falling asleep in front of the boob tube. Although naps are good!

The Passing of an MVMC Member Thanks to Tim Howard, Roger Gordon, and Fred Hoppel for input Gordon Stafford, long-time MVMC member and best known as former Technical Director and MVMC president in the club s early years, passed away recently. He ran the early Maintenance Days out of his house s garage in Centerville. His expertise was on NA s and installing CB radios in members cars (so you know it was in the old days), although not long ago a member had purchased a new ND and both Gordon Stafford and Tim Howard did the installation at Ed Kramer s Shop. Gordon also served as a judge for the Dayton Concours. Gordon served in multiple club offices, including Rally Master (2004), President (2005 and 2007), Technical Director (2006), and Co-Technical Director ( ). He was also instrumental in the club s incorporation in 2005 and its securing of liability insurance. Gordon Stafford was 77 years old. He is survived by his wife, Carole, son Jeffrey of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, daughter Suzanne (Ryan) Mark of Chicago, IL, a granddaughter, and several step-children and stepgrandchildren. He will be missed.

Adena Mansion Drive & Dine By Tony & Jeanne Zlocki This was truly a trip back through time. The mansion was an example of a very luxurious (for the time) home of the Worthington family a 2000-acre estate that belonged to the sixth governor of Ohio, who was instrumental in Ohio s statehood. The extensive gardens around the home included orchards, grapevines, and plots of vegetables. Our lunch was at the Old Canal Smoke House and was a rare combination of good food at reasonable prices. We were accommodated in a semi-private room with a very attentive waitress. This was a trip that was very enjoyable to plan, and the company of good friends made it that much better. For more photos from May MVMC events, visit the club s Google Drive page at:

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail Tour Part II was a cool drive to Bourbon Country with most of the same group from our first Kentucky overnight adventure. We know who we are! This time we covered more ground and toured and enjoyed the tasting of products of Jim Beam, Makers Mark, Wild Turkey and Four Roses distilleries. The afternoons were hot, but the distillery cellars were relatively cool. It was great fun for all participants, and our Comfort Inn was newly renovated! We ate well and enjoyed each other s company once again. A Part III is planned possibly as early as this Fall. Kentucky Bourbon Trail Tour Part II By Chuck Valley "The newsletter is an official MVMC publication. By agreement with Jeff Schmitt Mazda we are to provide them with advertising space with their logo in every issue of the newsletter. As the Jeff Schmitt logo is a part of the newsletter, we don't want to appear to be in competition with our sponsor. Therefore, no advertising of used vehicles will appear in the newsletter. We will advertise Miata related parts in the newsletter at no charge for MVMC members. The MVMC will help with preparing and releasing advertisements for used vehicles for MVMC members by distribution directly to members and on MVMC Facebook page(s)."

When: Saturday, July 14th Time: 11:00 am Xenia Bike Hub Driver's Meeting: 11:15 am Depart: 11:30 am Join Dave and Peggy Berry for a Drive and Dine to The Plain Folk Cafe Pleasant Plain, Ohio RSVP: to dinglebe@hotmail.com or by Sunday, July 8th We will drive about 50 miles through Greene, Warren and Clinton counties to the little burg of Pleasant Plain and a converted school house cafe where the food is great and the atmosphere is well, it's a throwback to the '60s, when music was recorded on vinyl and we were skinny. New route! Great back roads with lots of twisties await! So don't miss out on a great time! Miami Valley Miata Club Member News Tim Howard's "Green Monster" won the People's Choice award at the June Voss Hoss Cruise-In (photo courtesy of Dayton Daily News) She s back Patti Purdin returned to us after an abbreviated move to Florida - and promptly won a door prize at the June Meet & Greet!

Shop Talk (It s not just about the cars) By Tim Howard June is a big month for the shop crew. Not only do we have our normal shop days, but we sponsor several shop-related club events during this 30-day period. This year we had 3 shop days in June, and we sponsored a trip to the Cincinnati Concours d Elegance as well as a trip to the London Cobra Show. In terms of regular shop activities, our crew completed routine maintenance and evaluations on several member cars and our big project for the month was the installation of new struts and springs on Walt Helman s 2006 Miata. Alongside is a picture taken by Susan Cain of this month s shop day activities. The Shop Day schedule for the remainder of this season is July 12 th and 26 th and August 9 th and 23 rd. As mentioned previously, on the 10 th, Ed Kramer, Mike Allen, Jeffery and Diane Bowman, Tim Howard, and Ed Walker left early under threat of rain to meet with the Cincinnati club for our annual visit to the Cincinnati Concours d Elegance at Ault Park. As usual, the Cincy Club made us feel welcome, and the show was as good as any we have attended for years. I know I am repeating myself, but I believe the Ault Park Show to be one of the best Concours in the Mid-West, and 2018 was no exception. The threat of rain tended to moderate the temperature compared to previous years which was an unexpected plus for this year s show. Although the featured marque for 2018 was Porsche, my favorite car this year was a 1958 Corvette painted in a very rare original green color. Only about 65 cars came from the factory in this color combination. The picture that I took was not perfect, but the car was! Finally, on June 24 th about 12 of us were scheduled to trek to London, Ohio for the 14 th annual Cobra show. Threatening weather forecasted on the day before the trip caused about half of the potential attendees to cancel. As often happens, the forecast turned out to be wrong, and it was an enjoyable early morning drive to London. Per plan we arrived in time to see the parade of approximately 200 Cobras with their thundering engines arrive from their staging point north of town and assume their assigned positions on the streets of downtown London. It is worth getting up at the crack of dawn so you can experience the excitement of those beautiful cars and throbbing engines as they make their grand entrance. It is akin to watching the start of the Indianapolis 500. Not a drop of rain fell throughout the morning and the cool weather made it one of the best shows ever. Below are a couple of Ed Walker s pictures from the 2018 Show.

On more of a personal note, June was also a month in which I crossed an item off of my bucket list. I purchased a lift for my residential garage that will allow me to raise a car up to 3 feet off the ground for repair and maintenance work. Enclosed is a picture of the Green Monster on its maiden voyage into the sky. The woman shown in the picture was sent by the manufacturer to participate in pictures commemorating the first usage of this amazing product. If anyone is interested in the performance characteristics of the lift or would like to see it in action, please let me know.
