Spoke & Word December 2005 : VOLUME 14 : ISSUE 12 PRESIDENT STEVE MCAFEE VICE PRESIDENT ALAN LEMEN EDITOR BOB DOUGHERTY TREASURER MONTSE CONNINGTON MEMBERSHIP SID & MARIA BRONSON EVENTS NATHAN ROWLAND SECRETARY KAREN DENNIS Christmas Wishes I look out my window this morning at a grim white reminder; I have two LBCs to prepare. Yes it should have been done earlier but..well. Maybe we need some tech sessions in the fall. Nevertheless, Christmas is upon us and we must deal with it, along with the cold, snow, inversions, hard starting, and underachieving defrosters. The news reports last night about shopping mall mini-riots were disconcerting at best. There are good things: Cookies, fudge, a really good feast on the 16 th. PRESENTS! But really what we celebrate at Christmas is abundant love. You each understand and express that love in your own ways. I know it was God s love that began a wondrous work and it is that I celebrate. So from Elaine and I: Merry Christmas and may God bless you all. Merry Christmas & Happy MoToRing! Steve & Elaine What Weather? Diehards around the Guy Fawkes Bonfire Welcome New Members Eric & Kathy Damon bring a 78 Austin Mini & Eric's nice knees! Gary Thompson brings an MG Midget that will be a running restoration. Dwight & Judy Butlin bring a 64 TR4 restoration project. Plenty of good advice awaits you! The Editor s Two-Cents! Merry Christmas! Can you believe how fast this year has gone? As usual, not enough time for fishing, hiking, and of course, driving English Sports Cars. As we get ready for the long winter, now is the time to think about sponsoring club events for We can always use Wednesday Night Drive hosts, and there are a plethora (like that big word?!) of weekends that are open for drives, rallyes or gatherings. Look for updated Tamarack information on page 3, time s getting short, so make your plans soon. This month we re off to the city of York in the UK for an appropriately named Christmas Ale. Hope all your Stocking Fillers are as nice! Bob Doc
IBCC Christmas Party 16 December Join the IBCC family as we celebrate the season at the Maple Grove Grange Hall. Doors will open at 6PM, with dinner at 7PM. The main meal will be provided by the club, with side dishes provided by the members. Please bring a small gift for the Chinese Auction, or should that be called the cut-throat auction? Directions: Maple Grove Grange Hall, President Drive, Boise, ID. Fairview Ave. to Cloverdale Rd. South on Cloverdale for 1/2 mile. Left turn onto Executive Dr., left onto President Dr. Be sure to contact Maria Bronson by December 2nd to RVSP and arrange side dish assignments. Also let her know if you can help with set-up or clean-up. Special Request from Our Fearless Leader Lyla, because she has a heart as big as all outdoors, thought it would be a good idea to collect food at our Christmas party for local charity. I agree; on a night we intend to enjoy abundance, sharing is more than appropriate. Therefore, I will arrange for a collection receptacle (Might be the trunk of the Cortina!) to be available at the party. If you wish to participate, bring appropriate, non-perishable items and I will make sure they get to the Food Bank. Please do not feel you have to contribute; we all give our alms in our own private ways. Charity springs joyfully from the heart and should never be a matter of peer pressure. So do what you feel led to do and let s have fun." Holiday Quiz Can you spot what s wrong with this old photo of the MG factory? Photo: Gordon Lawson

The World of English Ale Give my people plenty of beer, good beer & cheap beer, and you will have no revolution among them. Queen Victoria York Brewery Stocking Filler Bitter Established in 1996 within the City Walls, York Brewery is both a tourist attraction and a working brewery, providing customers locally and around the country with the first traditionally brewed ales from within the walls of York for over 40 years. The brewery consists of a 20 barrel brew plant, five 20 barrel fermenters and 10 conditioning tanks. A gallery has been constructed around the brewhouse, providing an excellent viewing platform, with viewing panels into both the fermenting and conditioning rooms. High Quality has been the watchword from the outset. A Head Brewer, Assistant Brewer and Brewery Consultant ensure the beers represent some of the finest available anywhere. Proof of this can be judged by the growing number of awards, for example, overall Champion (Bronze Medal) for Yorkshire Terrier GBBF 2000, and Champion and Gold Medal Winner, Brewing Industry International Awards (Guildhall, London) 2002 for Centurion's Ghost Ale 5.4% ABV. Along with many award winning ales, York produces a fine Christmas Ale each year, Stocking Filler Ale, a strong dark bitter to celebrate the holiday season. Tasting notes: A dark rich full bodied ale, a distinctive finish of roast malt and chocolate with a hint of spice. Robust and satisfying. (courtesy York Brewery web site) Exciting Beer News! Mark your calendars for 1 February 2006! Coming to the Boise Valley is Aaron s English Grill & Taphouse. Aarons will have a full bar and over 16 taps with a good variety of English Ale. Bass Ale, Newcastle Brown, John Courage, Boddingtons & Tennant s will be available on tap, along with Harp Lager, Beamish Stout and, of course, Guinness Stout. As if the ale isn t enough, Aaron s will have all the required English activities: Darts, Snooker and of course, English League Soccer on the big screen! More info will be forthcoming in the January newsletter. Needless to say, I plan to be there!
Just a few pictures of Saturday coffee. If you haven t attended, we d love to see you! Coffee Gatherings: Meet at 9:30 AM Every 1st Saturday at the MeTime Coffeehouse, corner of Warm Springs and Eckert. Every 3rd Saturday at Moxie Java, Overland & Five Mile Guy Fawkes Neither high winds nor biting cold could dim the spirits of the IBCC faithful as we gathered at Bryan & Montse s home for a pot luck dinner & spectacular bonfire. There was no lack of fuel for the fire thanks to Dave Countryman who provided a trailer full of waste wood, which provided much needed warmth on a bitter cold night. Inside, the variety of hot food was much appreciated, holiday diets be darned! I m sure the Guinness & Steak Pie, Buffalo Hot Wings, Stuffed Mushrooms etc. were all low-fat. (Not!) All in all, a good night with good friends, thanks to Bryan & Montse for having us.
Three Generations of British Iron, 50 s, 60 s & 70 s. CREED FOR MG OWNERS My MG is my car I shall not want another. It maketh me lie down in wet places, it soileth my cloths. It leadeth me into the path of ridicule for it's name sake. Yea, though I accelerate down the hills, I suffer intermittent misses up them. I fear much evil when it is with me. It's oil pressure and axles discomfort me. It annointeth my face with oil. It's tank runneth over. Surely it will not be with me all the days of my life. Or I will dwell in the house of the insane forever. SUNDAY AFTERNOON DRIVE? By Rod Nichols A few weeks back, Sid Bronson stopped by on a sunny Saturday afternoon, took me for a short drive in his Healey, and invited me along on a drive the next day, along with Bob Huston and Bob Frisby. Bob F. offered the big surprise Sunday morning, showing up in his new Jaguar E type fixed head coupe, brought home from Moscow the day before! After oohing and aahing over the Jag, we departed heading generally west, toward the Blue Canoe Bar & Grill south of Marsing. It was a perfect day for a drive, temp around 65 degrees, sunny and a smile on all our faces! We wandered about till we found the Blue Canoe, had beer and a burger, and wandered back to Boise! By the way, the Jag did a nice job staying up with the Healey s and TR6! :)
Member News A brace of new Jaguars in the club! Bob Frisby unveiled his beautiful Jaguar FHC to the club. The car is impeccable, and Bob is more than ecstatic with the power.
