1 NEWSLETTER TERM Offices: Beaumaris Seniors Centre 84 Reserve Road, Beaumaris (behind the library) 9:30 to 2:00 Monday to Friday during term (excluding Public Holidays) Brighton Court House 75 Carpenter Street, Brighton (behind the Town Hall) 9:30 to 12:00 Monday to Friday during term (excluding Public Holidays) Telephone: Mail: P.O. Box 7269 BEAUMARIS baysideu3a@gmail.com Web: Term 1: 6 February 31 March Term 2: 18 April 30 June Term 3: 17 July 22 September Term 4: 09 October 8 December FROM THE PRESIDENT: Di and I have been on the road driving up north and then down the east coast so I am a little out of touch with U3A matters and this report will be brief. Once again we had a great Term 1 and Robin Douglas has worked very hard to make the Brighton Court House a second home for us. There is still work to do as we need to decide about how we handle external requests to use the Court House. COM has formed a subcommittee to come up with some guidelines. But the BC has certainly added to our numbers and is giving us an added presence in Brighton. Council has nearly finished work on the veranda out the back at Beaumaris so it will be interesting to see how this works out. We are hoping to start a Happy Hour on Friday Nights at Hobson's Cafe in Sandringham from 5.30 to 7.00 pm each Friday. The idea would be that those wanting to go just show up wearing their name tags so we can identify U3A members. At this stage we are seeking feedback from our members to see if this would attract enough interest. We would only need a dozen to turn up each time to make it work and Hobson's are capable of handling a big crowd if we had one. It is meant to be a casual event that members would know was on when they had a free Friday evening and would like a little social time. You will be informed of the start up day if we decide to proceed. David Hone Bayside U3A's Annual Fundraiser for the Cancer Council - THE BIGGEST MORNING TEA - Wednesday 14th June 2017 at the Hall of the Beaumaris U3A offices beginning at am and finishing at 12noon There is a $5.00 entry fee which includes morning tea, a door prize and entertainment. There will be a fundraising raffle in addition to the above. Please ring the Beaumaris office of to confirm your acceptance. Non-members are most welcome however, as there are a limited number of seats, the office must be advised of attendance. 1
2 COURSE NEWS The Bounty Trilogy Starts 10am Monday 5 June, Brighton Courthouse This course covers the Voyage of the HMS Bounty and the well-known mutiny of 1789; the settlement of the mutineers and Tahitians on Pitcairn Island and its history to the present; the move to Norfolk Island and its history and its beauty and condition today. The Life & Work of Robert Law Starts 10am Tuesday 18 July, Brighton courthouse The life and photography of Robert Law ( ) will be explored. Robert Law lived in Brighton from 1898 until his death in He was a keen amateur photographer and took thousands of photos in his lifetime French - Intermediate Beaumaris Starts 12pm Monday 17 July, Beaumaris Seniors Centre There are still a few places in this class. It's designed for people with a sound basic knowledge of French. Basic Modern Greek Starts 1.30pm Tuesday 18 July, Beaumaris Seniors Centre A great introduction to a meaningful and important classical language. Start with the basics of word construction leading into sentence construction through a thorough knowledge of the alphabet and proper phonetic representation of the spoken word. Convict Society and Its Enemies - A history of early New South Wales Starts 10.15am Friday 21 July, Beaumaris Seniors Centre We will look at the reasons for the Foundation of the first British Colony in Australia, the impact of this on indigenous people, the nature of our convict society and what if any impact it has had on our current society. European Operetta Starts 10am Tuesday 1 August, Brighton Courthouse This short course will offer a brief general introduction to English, French, German and Spanish operetta. An extensive collection of songs will be played to illustrate the different national genres. Numerology - Discovering your life purpose Starts 1pm Wednesday 9 August, Brighton Courthouse Expand your awareness and become master of your own destiny through the science of numbers, using the Pythagorean method. The Birth numbers can identify the personal destiny of each and everyone of us. Don't forget we have a lot of other courses that still have places. Check out our web site for the most up to date course information. Please do not turn up to a class unless you have received confirmation that you have a place in that class. Please remember to let the office know when you are going to be absent from class, or if you are not going to attend classes and need to withdraw from a course. It is disrespectful to our volunteer tutors when people enrolled in classes simply don't turn up, doubly so if the class has a waiting list and another eager person could take a place in the class. 2
3 2017 SPEAKERS PROGRAM The first of this year s Speakers Programmes was held at the Brighton Court House just before Anzac Day, and in keeping with the nature of our National Day of Remembrance, we had a speaker on the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign. This year we had John Basarin AOM talking about the landing and battles from a Turkish perspective. John and his wife Hatice are Turkish-born immigrants who have collaborated on a number of books and studies about Gallipoli. It was refreshing and interesting to gain insight into the campaign from an alternative viewpoint. Our second speaker just after Anzac Day was our local Goldstein member Tim Wilson MP. Tim gave an insightful account of some of the key issues and opportunities facing our country and how our society is rapidly changing. There was a vigorous question and answer session and audience participants variously described the talk as fantastic, really very good, and worth repeating. The U3A Speakers Programme is being expanded so as to ensure we get the best speakers on the best and most interesting topics to speak directly to members. Watch this space. City of Bayside Brass Band Welcomes New Members Brighton township has had a Brass Band since 1876 according to official Historian Weston Bates. In fact it is one of the oldest surviving Bands in Victoria although it has gone by several different names and has had many different uniforms over the past 140 years. With the Incorporation of the City of Bayside in 1994 it changed again. Gone was the bright red uniform and gold braid of the previous 30 years to be replaced with a more conservative Bayside blue jacket and tie, white shirt and black pants. The corporate logo of the new City is on the pocket. Many of you will have learned to play an instrument when you were younger but may have let your playing lapse during your adult years. It is these capable Brass players of both sexes that we would love to contact in order to augment our numbers in the Bayside Band. We have plenty of good, spare instruments and players willing to assist former players to brush up lost or rusty technique. Please contact Richard Shiell on or at richard.shiell@gmail.com TERM DATES 2017 HOLIDAYS Term 1 6 February 31 March 01 April 17 April Term 2 18 April 30 June 01 July 16 July Term 3 17 July 22 September 23 September 08 October Term4 09 October 8 December 9 December 28 January

5 THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS Our volunteers are vital for the running of our organisation and we should all be very conscious of this when we are communicating with them. It is important that they are treated with the respect they deserve as Bayside U3A could not function without them.. CAR PARKING AT BRIGHTON COURT HOUSE A lot of the parking around the Brighton Court House has a 2 hour time limit. Please note that there is all day parking north of Wilson St, on Carpenter St. BAYSIDE U3A WEBSITE We now have a photo section on the website so send any photos of your classes to our general address and they will be added to the photo gallery. 6 ADVANCE NOTICES The Annual Bayside U3A Trivia Quiz will be held at the Bayside U3A Brighton Venue, the Brighton Courthouse in September - date to be advised. A member survey will be conducted in 2017 to enable Bayside U3A to determine the information needed to ensure that we can best represent the interests of members in our activities. The survey will be held in the 3rd term of our year. We would encourage all members to participate so that their views are taken into account. More information towards the end of second term. U3A Network News Congratulations to John Parker who was elected President of U3A Network Victoria, at the Network AGM in March.
