2 WELCOME! Since 1983 MWS Student Camps has been welcoming young people from all over the world to our programmes in Canada and we are very excited to have your family member join us this coming summer. The staffs at the MWS Montreal English Camps have planned what is sure to be an incredible first summer, full of interesting events, fantastic trips, great learning experiences and absolute fun! We trust that this Parent s Handbook will help prepare your student for their experience at the MWS English Camps in Montreal. Yours sincerely, Vanessa Quellos Director - Montreal 2015 UPDATES We are happy to announce that renovations have been completed and our programmes will be returning back to Douglas Hall, the traditional location of our Montreal English Camps. Douglas Hall is located right beside the McGill (Percival - Molson) Stadium. The MWS camp offices, residences, activity rooms and most classes are located at Douglas Hall. The majority of our meals are scheduled at the Bishop Mountain Hall (BMH) dinning room.

3 WHAT TO BRING Generally speaking, do not bring too many things to camp. The more you have with you, the more you are liable to loose or leave behind. Most importantly, what you bring with you should make your experience more enjoyable and not leave you worrying. SUGGESTED CLOTHING LIST! 1 toilet kit (toothbrush, toothpaste, comb/brush, soap, shampoo, deodorant, etc.)! 7 pairs of underwear! 7 pairs of socks! 1 bathing suit! 2 pairs of pajamas! 1 bath robe! 2 towels (towels are not provided at the residences)! 2 wash cloths! 3 pairs of shoes (running shoes, soft soled shoes that are comfortable for walking lots of walking!)! 3 pairs of shorts! 6 shirts, T-shirts or blouses! 2 warm, long sleeve shirts! 1 sweater! 2 pairs of jeans or cotton pants! Jacket or raincoat! Dress outfit for restaurant/theatre/concert! Knapsack! Camera! Books or reading material OTHER ITEMS " Please do not bring valuables. The camps cannot be held responsible for any loss of personal property.

4 LAUNDRY SERVICE Campers laundry will be collected in provided laundry bags on designated mornings and returned the following afternoon. We suggest not bringing expensive clothing that is difficult to clean. laundry service does not include special care clothing articles. The " Please make sure that all clothing is labeled with the camper s name. The camps cannot be held responsible for lost articles that are not identified. MEDICAL FORMS Every student must have a completed medical form along with a photograph attached in order to attend the programme. Please attach extra information to the medical form, if necessary. The medical form must be signed by the parent and/or legal guardian. If the student becomes exposed to any infectious disease less than 4 weeks before the time of departure, MWS must be notified and informed. " For health and safety reasons no student will be admitted to camp without a completed medical form. Medical insurance is included for all residential students attending the MWS Language Camps. The insurance includes all medical and dental emergencies, including prescribed medication up to a limit of $100, Can. per student. If extra medical insurance is purchased, please include a copy of the details.

5 CONTACT WITH CAMPERS There is minimal free time for students while at camp. MWS believes in keeping everyone busy and learning while having fun at all times. Thus, it is not possible to pull campers out of the scheduled programmes unless there is an emergency situation. Every day the camps have a meeting at which all mail addressed to students is handed out. Campers really appreciate this time and parents are encouraged to write letters and send s while their child is at camp. Junior and Intermediate campers will have a weekly scheduled time for communicating with home. This time is Thursday evening (Montreal time) for Juniors and Friday evenings for Inters. Campers will alternate between phoning home, sending s and/or writing letters and postcards. Phone cards are available for purchase and MWS staff helps the campers with dialing instructions. Senior campers are responsible for their own communication as time permits. Public telephones are located in the residences and camp area and campers will also have access to the internet at certain times. 6 EMERGENCY TELEPHONE " Please note that this number is to be used for emergencies only. Students cannot always be reached at this number due to the camp programme. Messages will be taken by the camp staff or may be left on the answering service. (514) MOBILE PHONES Mobile phones are not permitted while in programmes at MWS camps. Students arriving with and using their mobile phones during camp programmes will be asked to leave them in the camp office where they will remain until departure. Students will have access to their mobile phones for communication purposes during scheduled weekly times. The camps cannot be responsible for the safe keeping and security of any mobile phones brought. MEDICAL EMERGENCIES A basic medical infirmary is located at the camps for minor injuries. A medical clinic, located a 10 minute walk from the camps is available for more extensive injuries or sickness. Emergency situations are directed to the McGill Health Centre and/or Montreal Children s Hospital. " Parents are contacted immediately if their child is involved in a serious emergency and is taken to the hospital. Please ensure that the correct contact information is included on the medical form. MWS must be able to reach the parents and/or legal guardians at all times in case of an emergency.

Classes are not scheduled on these days.

8 CAMP RULES MWS has as few rules as possible and we try to make them reasonable and fair. Parents have the responsibility of helping their children understand the MWS rules prior to the start of camp. Campers and their families should feel comfortable with all the rules noted below. Any concerns may be brought to the attention of the MWS administration. Parents will be notified in certain situations where a camp rule is broken. If the situations persist or a Canadian law is broken, a camper may be asked to leave the programme early at the parent s full expense. Campers may not possess or consume any alcohol or illegal drugs while on camp property or while in the camp s charge. " Any student found to break this rule will be dismissed immediately with no refund of fees. Campers are not permitted to smoke or have cigarettes in their possession (as per Canadian law for minors). Any camper found smoking in the residence will be dismissed from the programme. Male campers are not allowed in female residences and female campers are not allowed in male residences. The MWS Camps are co-ed camps; therefore they must protect the privacy of all students and the reputation of offering a well-balanced co-ed programme. All personal monies more than $50.00, transportation tickets and passports should be left in the safekeeping of the camp office. Campers are not allowed to leave camp without proper supervision and permission. A letter from the parent or guardian is required before a relative or friend is allowed to take the student away from the camp. Campers are expected to attend all classes and participate in all activities and excursions. Respect at all times.

9 TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION Please advise us as soon as possible on all camp arrival information. This will enable us to confirm our reception for the students upon their arrival in Montreal. (A confirmation will be ed to you.) Suggested arrival times: between 2 pm and 4 pm Suggested departure times: between 5 pm and 7 pm Please note that we have students arriving and departing throughout the day. Thus, our staff will meet and assist students travelling alone whenever they arrive or need to depart. Times above are suggested only, based on the arrival and departure days planned programming. " Upon arrival in Montreal, all students will be met at the airport, bus or train station by our staff wearing MWS Student Camps staff shirts (blue) and holding MWS Montreal Camp signs. Driving To Camp: If you plan on driving or picking your child up from camp, please note this on the transportation form and we will you driving directions to our exact location. Please also advise approximate time of drop off/pick up so that our staff is ready to assist your child.
