1 RARITY BAY WOMEN S CLUB March RARE VIEWS NEWSLETTER MARCH 2015 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE March heralds the return of color to our landscape after an often bleak and dreary winter with the resurgence of crocuses, daffodils, hyacinths, tulips and other harbingers of spring. March 8 is the beginning of Daylight Savings Time and its longer days of sunlight. Women s History month is also celebrated during the month with many of the United States Government branches honoring women throughout the month. The Library of Congress, the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian are just a few entities paying tribute to the many generations of women who have worked tirelessly to make our country stronger and improve the life of women in general. The many roles women played during World War II, the Korean and the Vietnam Wars have paved the way for women serving in the Armed Forces today. Whether marching as Suffragettes, championing equal rights for women in the workplace or endorsing the freedoms and opportunities enjoyed by men, their voices and ideas have been a gift to each ensuing generation. St. Patrick s Day is celebrated on March 17 around the world by many of the Irish persuasion (and others who are Irish for the day). This year, March 20 at 6:45 PM is the spring equinox (sometimes called the vernal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere), which heralds the official arrival of spring. Living in East Tennessee affords each of us the opportunity to celebrate Take a Walk in the Park day on March 30. We can join loved ones and friends in a hike along scenic trails that abound in East Tennessee, some mountainous with panoramic vistas and others leisurely along babbling brooks, streams or beautiful woodland settings or around your own neighborhood. I hope each of you enjoy the return of sunny, warmer days and the abundance of new life and color that surrounds us. Board of Directors President: Judy Simmons Vice President: Judy Gibson Secretary: Pat Craig Treasurer: Pat Murphy Social Director: Barb Witthoft Greeters Director: Cathy Filosi Extended Board Newsletter Editor: Linda Riley Photographer and Historian: Nancy Hollman Sunshine: Harriet Hulings Webmaster: Betty Girardeau Our mission is to provide and support an inclusive social environment, Foster informational programs, enhance community relationships, and promote charitable works.
2 Building a new home? Remodeling an existing one? Just want some ideas to spruce up a space? Then attend the March Women's Club meeting. Susan Knolton, Design Consultant, Ethan Allen Interiors, will be sharing her decorating expertise. For her, it s about the totality of a room the client s lifestyle, the amount of light, and the role of color. Born in Heidelberg, Germany, she moved to East Tennessee in 1962 and attended The University of Tennessee. A member of the Interior Design Society (IDS), Susan joined the Knoxville Ethan Allen team in Her work includes an impressive range of commercial and residential spaces, and her projects have been highlighted in many East Tennessee show homes. Sandy Steichen, and her husband, Dale, are living at 1440 Rarity Bay Parkway. Her home state is California, however, they moved to Rarity Bay from Connecticut. Janice LoSasso and her husband, Ronald, are now living at 859 Rarity Bay Parkway. Linda Riggio and her husband, Vincint, have purchased and are living in Linda Blair's old house on Rarity Bay Parkway. Her home state is Missouri but they moved here from Florida. She loves to fish, some gardening, cooking, and hiking, and has been known to "visit race tracks." Jane Tyson and her husband, Richard, are living at 295 Rock Point Drive. Her home state is Virginia, but they moved here from Alabama. She used to be an elementary school teacher and also worked for NASA in their education department. Her interests include reading, travel, and interior design. Carol Milhiser and her husband, Bob, moved here from New Jersey. She was born in Pennsylvania. They are living at 240 Whippoorwill Drive. She likes to crochet and wants to join the hiking group. She is also looking forward to checking out our other social opportunities and activities. Lynn Lambert and her husband, Jerry, are living at 909 Rarity Bay Parkway. They made the "long" move here from Knoxville. She says that she enjoys horses, boating, travelling, and dog activities.

7 AT THE TENNESEE THEATER IN HISTORIC DOWNTOWN KNOXVILLE. What happens in Vegas...all started with The Rat Pack. This spirited show recreates one of the famous "Summit at the Sands" nights when a swingin', ring-ading group known as "The Rat Pack" was creating hipster legend with a no-holdsbarred nightclub act starring Vegas' four favorite sons: Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin and Joey Bishop. Produced by Dick Feeney, THE RAT PACK IS BACK features a hot, live 12-piece orchestra that sends audiences straight back to the coolest time in history. See why The Las Vegas Sun writes, "This is as close as anyone has come to capturing the feeling of the real thing," and the Chicago Tribute raves, "Classic comic material. Excellent!" Join friends from RBWC for the Friday, May 8, performance (doors open at 7:00 PM and the show starts at 8:00 PM). We have been able to hold 20 tickets in the $54 price range and 20 tickets in the $69 price range. RBWC will be selling tickets for the Friday, May 8, performance at the general meeting on March 3, or you may contact Sue Seitz at sueseitz@gmail.com by March 5 to order your tickets with the group. Please make out your checks to RBWC. Note that we must purchase the tickets early in March and may not be able to have the tickets held for sale thereafter, so please purchase your tickets at the March 3 meeting or let Sue know by March 5. RBWC must have payment at the time of order. When signing up, please let us if you would be interested in getting together before the show for dinner at a restaurant in Knoxville. If we have sufficient interest, we will make arrangements.
8 A special thank you to all the RBWC members who attended the different February meeting held at the CAC. We had more than eighty members participate in the fantastic brunch. A special thank you to Judy Gibson and Delaine Griffin for their extraordinary work in preparing the agenda and the decorations for the event and to all the ladies who worked to set up the CAC and to clean up afterward. From all the messages we have received, everyone who attended had a wonderful time and would like to have more of the same events in the future. Thank you to Barbara Witthoft, her committee and everyone who setup, cleaned up and attended the Soup, Salad and Dessert Dinner at the CAC on Friday, January 23. More than 60 people enjoyed the fabulous soups, salads and desserts on a very cold day in East Tennessee. All of the snowmen used to decorate the tables and entrance helped emphasize the cold temperatures outside and provided a wonderful atmosphere for the dinner.
