Bartle A Two Dales Project, Applicant: North Country Theatre SDF grant: 2,000 Total project cost: 50,846 Image: Workshop rehearsals. Credit: Beki Harrison. North Country Theatre is a company that stages professional theatre productions in village halls, community centres, churches, and outdoor spaces. Bartle: A Two Dales Community Project explores traditional folklore and the ancient tradition of scape-goating where one person is made to bear the blame of others. A play will be developed using the Swaledale song, Reeth Bartle Fair, and Wensleydale s annual custom of Burning of Bartle as its inspiration. Local people will be involved as performers, promoters and crew and be supported by a professional team from North Country Theatre. The play will be performed 9 times at various venues across the two dales in June/July The SDF grant will be used to create a souvenir booklet and programme. Brows Pasture, Applicant: Dr David Johnson SDF grant: 1,955 Total project cost: 3,910 Image: Refugees taking part in an archaeological dig at Chapel-le-Dale. Credit: John Asher. David Johnson is a geographer who has specialised in landscape archaeology in the Yorkshire Dales. The project aimed to investigate two probable medieval farmstead sites at Brow s Pasture in Chapel-le-Dale using archaeological excavation techniques. Dales Countryside Museum s Young Archaeology Group based at Hawes and Bradford Cathedral s Asylum Seeker Group also participated in the excavation work. The SDF grant was used to fund the cost of sample analysis, publications and graphics, insurance, purchase of survey equipment and travel costs to carry out archive research. 1

Dales Highway Way-Marking, Applicant: Friends of Dales High Way SDF grant: 1,290 Total project cost: 3,015 Image: Way-marking in Hetton village, Credit: Friends of a Dales Highway Friends of A Dales High Way is a volunteer group set up in 2010 to support, promote and maintain the long distance walking route A Dales High Way. The 90 mile route starts in Saltaire and crosses the Yorkshire Dales to Appleby-in-Westmorland. The group wanted the entire route way-marked to enable walkers to follow the path with confidence, meet the requirements of Ordnance Survey so that the pathway can be included on OS maps, and help promote the High Way and the National Park as a walking area. Work in the Dales was undertaken in partnership with the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority Ranger Service. SDF enabled survey work and way-marking to go ahead and funded publicity materials to better promote the route. Enabling Refugee Participation in Dales Archaeology, Applicant: Settle Friends Quaker Meeting SDF grant: 1,305 Total project cost: 1,743 Image: Participants visiting Gordale Scar, Credit: John Asher Settle Quakers is an organisation that has long standing links with refugee groups based at Blackburn Cathedral. Many refugees live in deprived areas, struggle to move out of poverty and establish themselves in work. SDF funding allowed 5 people originally from Eritrea, The Ivory Coast and The Sudan to participate in the Brows Pasture Archaeological dig under the supervision of Dr David Johnson. In so doing, this project gave a small group of people the opportunity to visit the Dales for the first time, learn about the special landscape, gain new experiences and forge new friendships. 2

Woollen Hills, Applicant: The Tourism Network SDF grant: 15,750 Total project cost: 31,500 Image: Promotional logo. Credit: Susan Briggs, The Tourism Network The Tourism Network is led by Susan Briggs, a marketing consultant who has been providing advice and expertise to the industry for 20 years. Inspired by the massive impact of sheep on the cultural heritage, the landscape and economy of the Yorkshire Dales, the Woollen Hills project aims to improve the experience for day visitors by encouraging them to slow down, visit one area and spend more time and money learning about the life of the Yorkshire Dales and the special qualities of the National Park. The project will act as a catalyst for the creation of new experiences and activities, as well as promoting and adding value to existing activities. It is hoped that 50 to 100 businesses will participate in the project. The SDF is being used for project management, mentoring, supporting businesses and individuals to create new products, displays and experiences, alongside marketing advice and support. Yorkshire Dales Electric Bicycle Network, Applicant: Electric Travel CiC SDF grant: 6,000 Total project cost: 9,000 Image: Demonstration electric bikes at Grassington National Park Centre, Credit: YDNPA The long-term aim of this project is to create a vibrant and successful Electric Bicycle Network enabling residents and visitors throughout the Dales to experience the area from the vantage point of a bicycle. Electric bicycles have a motor powered battery that helps to break down some of those major barriers to cycling, including the fear of not being fit enough to tackle the hills. The SDF grant paid for the cost of two electric bikes and accessory equipment for each bike. 5

Mosaic Youth, Applicant: Campaign for National Parks SDF grant: 5,859 Total project cost: 140,863 Image: Ditch digging at Blea Moor, Keighley Play Ranger Project. Credit: YDNPA Mosaic is a national project, led by the Campaign for National Parks (CNP) that aims to build sustainable links between black and minority ethnic communities, the National Parks in England and the Youth Hostels Association. Mosaic was developed in response to evidence that although about 10% of the population is of an ethnic minority background, only about 1% of visitors to National Parks are from ethnic minorities. The aim of the Mosaic Youth project is to help young people enjoy the outdoors, increase their understanding of the fragility of the National Parks, and install a sense of responsibility so that these landscapes will be looked after in years to come. The project aims to recruit 30 young people over 3 years who will receive training leading to increased employability, in land management. SDF was used as a contribution towards a part time Project Manager to ensure delivery of this project. Turnip House Camping Barn, Low Row, Applicant: Hazel Brow Farm, Low Row, Swaledale SDF grant: 13,420 Total project cost: 58,280 Image: Turnip House Barn. 7 Village Hall Electricity Saving Project, Applicant: Clapham cum Newby Village Hall Committee SDF grant: 1,292 Total project cost: 1,722 Image: Clapham Village Hall, Credit: YDNPA Clapham Village Hall is a well-used community facility with a number of groups including the local art group, play group and dance club meeting on a regular basis. An energy audit was undertaken for the village hall which identified a number of improvement measures including external wall insulation, water saving options in the toilets and lighting improvements. The SDF grant was used to fund replacement inefficient light fittings, bulbs and tubes with low energy equivalents throughout the building including the emergency and outside lighting. The applicants also ensured that light pollution was kept to a minimum. Visitor & Traffic Management Plan, Applicant: Horton Parish Council SDF grant: 2,250 Total project cost: 3,000 Image: Event traffic in Horton village, credit: YDNPA Horton in Ribblesdale has seen a dramatic increase in the number and frequency of sponsored walk events, such as the Three Peaks challenge, that use the village as a start and finish point. These events now occur every weekend from March to October and can attract over a thousand participants most of whom arrive by private car. This volume of visitors and their vehicles has led to severe parking problems that have a detrimental impact on the wellbeing of residents and local businesses. The SDF grant will be used to develop a visitor and traffic management plan for the parish council. This will look at ways to manage the volume, location and organisation of village parking, the impact of weekend visitor numbers, how to maximise community benefit from visitors, responsibilities of event organisers and how to reduce the number of vehicles that visitors bring and maximising the use of local bus, coach and rail services. 7

Connecting Communities, Applicant: North Yorkshire Business & Education Partnership SDF grant: 6,700 Total project cost: 12,750 Image: Promotional project logo. Credit: NYBEP NYBEP is an education business partnership based in York whose aim is to develop the skills young people need to work in a business environment by delivering work-related learning programmes and engaging employers in education. This project challenges young people to learn about the special qualities of the National Park by developing a concept and design for a software application (App) to be used on mobile devices by people living in and visiting the Dales. The App will be informative and interactive, and respond to two themes. The first theme will focus on highlighting less-well-known places in, or facts about, the National Park. The second theme will be about promoting local transport services in the Dales and make finding and using these options much more accessible. The SDF grant will be used to support staff time and materials, to publicise the challenge to schools in the Dales and surrounding area, enable the development of a set of information packs and the delivery of 5 workshops. Access to caving for young people/adults with a disability/special needs, Applicant: Clapham Adventure SDF grant: 2,200 Total project cost: 4,370 Image: Valley Entrance Cave, Kingsdale. Credit: Dave Ryall. Clapham Adventure is a new outdoor activity provider that gives people of all abilities the opportunity to go on guided walks in the Dales and caving expeditions in Ingleborough Cave. The business provides young people and adults with physical or learning difficulties the opportunity to go caving and experience new challenges. Activities are tailored to each individual s needs. The cave environment provides a stimulating multi-sensory environment that will introduce the participants to the underground cave system, learn about team work, and health and well-being benefits associated with outdoor activities. The SDF grant was used to cover the costs of additional specialist insurance cover, a 3 year Adventure Activities Licence from the Health and Safety Executive, training for freelance instructors to work with people who have a broad range of physical and mental abilities, technical training for the more specialised caving activities, caving equipment such as children s suits, helmets and harnesses, and marketing. 8

Access Development Plan, Applicant: Craven District Council SDF grant: 2,000 Total project cost: 13,845 The Leeds & Liverpool Canal runs through the south and west of the Craven District. The aim of this project is to produce an Access Development Plan for the implementation of a cross border greenway using the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath from Riddlesden to Gargrave and the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The Plan will be based on comprehensive desk and field research, public consultation and linkages to existing and future initiatives. The outcome will be a Plan that details a phased approach to the delivery of a sustainable transport corridor that encourages access to the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and recreation and economic opportunities for local residents and businesses respectively. Superfast broadband for Dent & Garsdale, Applicant: Fibre Garden CIC SDF grant: 14,900 Total project cost: 23,200 Image: Promotional logo for Fibre Garden. Credit: Fibre Garden CIC Garsdale and Dentdale Parish Councils started working together on a community broadband initiative in Fibre GarDen is a Community Interest Company set up by the Parish Councils in 2011 to deliver a fully inclusive, future-proofed, affordable Fibre to the Home superfast broadband network to all 500+ households in the two Dales. The aim of the scheme is to offer service speeds of 40 Mbps and 100 Mbps, enabling high quality connectivity for business, education, media, healthcare, tourism and agriculture. Currently properties have less than 2 Mbps or no broadband service at all. The SDF grant will be used to determine land ownership, identify conservation and heritage designations and to secure agreements along the proposed route where cables will be laid. It will also be used to obtain legal advice for the production of a community share prospectus. 9

Closing the loop on organic waste, Applicant: Embsay Primary School PTA SDF grant: 4,688 Total project cost: 6,250 Image: Embsay Primary School Eco-committee, Credit: Embsay Primary School Embsay Parent Teachers Association applied for an SDF grant to purchase an A500 Rocket Composting System to divert the school s organic waste from landfill and produce compost for use by the school and wider community. It has been calculated that 6150 litres per year of organic waste will be composted. The School s geography leader and eco committee will lead the project. Workshops will be run for the 200 children who attend Embsay School, the six primary schools in Skipton, and members of the local community to demonstrate how the composter works, encourage composting at home and to explain the positive impact that recycling will have on Embsay village and the National Park. The compost will be used in the school s garden areas, the school field, and cricket ground. Rather than selling the compost to local residents, the PTA will ask for a donation in order to raise extra funds. Wild about Wharfedale, Applicant: Open Country SDF grant: 1,500 Total project cost: 2,416 Image: Accessible walk, Bolton Abbey, Wharfedale. Credit: Bolton Abbey Estate Open Country is a registered charity. It has over 20 years experience in successfully organising and leading countryside activities for people with disabilities. It offers information, training and advice to organisations wanting to provide better access to the countryside. The applicant applied to SDF for support in putting together a free, web based Break Free pack with accessible walks and cycle routes along the River Wharfe aimed at encouraging people with disabilities to visit the National Park. Eight routes will be designed, five of which lie within the National Park. The advantage of having a web based resource means that it will have a long shelf life; if route details change they can be updated quickly and cheaply without the need for expensive print re-runs. It is hoped that accommodation providers and residential centres will use the resource especially as there is no charge associated with the packs. 10

Sedbergh School Swimming Pool - Solar photo-voltaics installation, Applicant: Sedbergh School Foundation SDF grant: 18,498 Total project cost: 45,198 Image: Interior of Sedbergh School Pool, Credit: Sedbergh School Foundation Sedbergh School Foundation is a registered charity established in 2000 to provide independent financial support for Sedbergh School. The Foundation has received a grant offer of 150,000 from Sport England to contribute to the 360,000 refurbishment of the school s pool. This work will make the pool much more suitable for use by other schools and the local community. In addition to this the School wishes to improve the energy efficiency of the existing pool building. Part of this plan involves the installation of solar photovoltaic panels to generate sufficient electricity to heat the pool. SDF will be used to fund the installation of 16 solar photo-voltaic panels and the re-building of the roof so that it is able to support the weight of the panels. The proposed scheme is expected to generate around 3,060kWh of electricity per annum. The building s carbon footprint would be reduced annually by 1,605 kg of equivalent carbon dioxide. 11
