1 The Dunolly and District Community News The Welcome Record Volume 32 Issue 34 Wednesday 6th September 2017 Donation: 50c Cottages Miners cottages are common in the goldfields region. Over the years many of them have been modified to suit the owners changing circumstances. Additions were made as the family grew or became a little better off. Often you can clearly see where each alteration was made. They have also been popular with restorers, keen to have their own piece of history. Mostly they are weatherboard, but there are brick or mudbrick ones as well. Some of them are very well-maintained and sit in great gardens while others have been left to moulder quietly in the sun. There is a small place called Glynn Cottage on the Hepburn Springs-Daylesford road, which is quite unusual. It was built to fit on the back of a dray so it could be easily transported from mine site to mine site. Inside there is a trapdoor which opens on to a set of steps leading down to a mine shaft. It must have been difficult digging a shaft under your house, but you would have been able to work in all weather and in privacy. All these miners cottages are very small, with only one or two tiny rooms and a fire place. Imagine raising a large family in such a cramped home. They are great reminders of the difficulties endured by prospectors on the goldfields in days gone by. Phone ROSIE S RAMBLE I have invested in a plastic box with a lid so I can put all my little bits and pieces from the kitchen cupboards in the same place. I am tired of having to rat around looking for the really small gadgets that seem to hide up the back behind bigger things. Already I have found things I had forgotten I have. Prisoners who escaped a few weeks ago were thought to have gone overnight. They were there at tea-time and not at breakfast. Fairly obvious. We had a strange experience just after dark last night. My sister was looking out the kitchen window when she called me to look at something spooky. Her car was parked close to the house, and when I looked out there was Mr Ramble apparently sitting in the back seat, facing the back of the car. Except he was actually in the house sitting at the dining table. This really had the hairs on the back of our necks prickling.by some refraction or reflection of the lights inside, his image was showing on the tinted window of the car. She was right it was spooky. Maybe someone who understands the strange ways of light may be able to explain how it happened. I wonder how many ghost sightings are caused by something similar to this. I am feeling a bit low we let our beautiful friend Rex the Wonder dog go this week. He had been our companion and mate for nearly fourteen years. Miss him. Rosie GOOD ADVICE Don t look for trouble. 3 6th September 2017 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 32 Issue 33 Page 3 LETTERS to the EDITOR The Up-Cycled Tree Stump As a regular The Welcome Record reader, I always enjoy reading Rosie s Ramble for her interesting and quirky take on things! I was most surprised and delighted to read in The Welcome Record where she rambled about just noticing an up-cycled tree stump in a front garden on the Moliagul end of Broadway (The Elite End) and her comments about it. Although one blue wren keeps flying off it at times, the up-cycled tree stump is actually a hollow log that has a long, very interesting history attached to it and has been in place for quite some time. It may have become more noticeable due to the fact that some very old rose bushes dating back to 1974 had unfortunately reached their use by date and sadly had to be removed. The Front Garden Owner Marg J Davies Rubbish Dumped Is this what someone thinks of our lovely town? Someone dumped domestic rubbish up behind the Quarry on Gooseberry Hill over the weekend. It took us five big garbage bags to collect what was dumped. It was being blown around and distributed all over the bush. It took us a car trip and lots of bags to clear it up and put it in my bin. It is very sad that someone thinks that it is acceptable behaviour to dump their rubbish in the beautiful wild bush. We walk the dogs daily up there and marvel at the wildflowers, wattle flowers and wildlife, such as the many echidnas. Looking at tea bags isn t quite the same experience. It doesn t have the same je ne sais quoi, methinks. Rachel Buckley In last week s Letters to the Editor entitled Thirty Pieces of Silver, the name of the contributor was regrettably inadvertently omitted from the letter. Our apologies to John Tully of Carisbrook for this omission. TWR Team Council Sacking I read with interest recent articles where some of our former Councillors have complained about their recent sacking. To those complaining, I offer the following. You held your hand up to represent our community at the highest level of local Government, and you were duly elected. The responsibilities you willingly took on included employing the appropriate leadership team, ensuring the appropriate procedures were in place and followed, and good governance. I accept you cannot be aware of the council minutia, but you are our representatives and as such you are responsible for the council s performance. Stop whingeing and take responsibility! Many people provided feedback to the council and were ignored (including me). It is sad for everyone when a State Government decides State-appointed administrators will do a better job representing the interests of our community than the community s elected Councillors, but that is the situation this community finds itself in. Some of you may nominate for Council at the next election. To those who are considering nominating, my key questions are: what has the last few years taught you, and what you would do differently next time? I await your response(s) with interest. Michael Chainey The Exotic Lives of Lola Montez Finucane & Smith From Patrick White Playwright Award Winner Jackie Smith & world famous cabaret stars Finucane & Smith comes the story of the wildest showgirl of the nineteenth century - Lola Montez. She horsewhipped the editor of the Ballarat Times (for a bad review). 10 Page 10 Volume 32 Issue 34 THE WELCOME RECORD 6th September 2017 Tailings Extracts from the Newsletter of Goldfields Historical & Arts Society Inc. DUNOLLY S WOODEN LOCK-UP This image is an enlargement of a section of a photograph of the Dunolly Police Camp taken in September It shows the transportable wooden lock-up. Monster Meeting site. The Monster Meeting or rather meetings were held by miners in Chewton in 1851 to protest against the mining licence fees. This predated the Eureka Stockade. It was one of our society s members, Glenn Braybrook, who located the site in Heritage Victoria spent $265,000 buying a vacant block of land so as the site could be included in their proposed World Heritage claim. The investigation found out that they did not consult with the original discoverer, nor did they do a comprehensive survey of historical records. It turns out that the actual meeting site was on a rise on the other side of the bitumen road. They purchased the wrong block of land sketch of the Monster Meeting by David Tulloch. The approximate corner of the property purchased by Heritage Victoria has been added by black lines at the left edge of the sketch. The Dunolly Police Camp had been established at Camp Hill, 2 km north-west of Dunolly, in November Initially prisoners were handcuffed to a bullock chain around a log. Then, in March 1857, an iron lock-up costing 400 was built at Dunolly. There were a lot of complaints about the Police Camp being so far out of town and the risk to people travelling there to deposit their gold. Finally, in May 1859, the Dunolly Police Camp was moved into Dunolly Township. This camp was on four town allotments. Then one was excised as a reserve for the Town Hall. In modern terms, the three remaining allotments are the area covered by the old police station and lock-up, police stables and current police station. A transportable wooden lock-up was brought to Dunolly for this new camp. These buildings were made by various contractors for the Police Works Section. They were to an English design with only slight variations over time. The lock-ups had an iron floor, cast iron corners and an iron door. Heavy wooden boards were slotted in to form the walls which were held in place by steel rods through the building. The ceiling was made of more heavy timbers covered by a light, pitched roof. In the walls there were ventilation openings with steel bars which were set just below the ceiling level. The whole building could be dismantled, loaded on a wagon and taken to wherever it was needed. The transient nature of the goldfields made these transportable wooden lock-ups suitable for the job. Dunolly was seen to be a permanent town, so in early 1862 the brick lock-up was erected. Soon after, the wooden lock-up would have been dismantled and moved to another police camp. It had been in Dunolly for only three years. The last of these transportable wooden lock-ups was made about 1890, the last one not being taken out of commission until About 45 have survived across Victoria including locally at Timor and Avoca. A NEW VERSION OF THE PAST? Recently there was an investigation held by the Heritage Council Registration Committee into the location of the This has placed Heritage Victoria in an awkward situation. Heritage Victoria stated that the contemporary maps and sketches that show that the meeting site is across the road are inaccurate and that the main sketch was done later from memory. If so the artist must have had an incredible memory as all the features are in correct alignment including the topography. Surely this means the sketch was done on site. A brick chimney can be seen at the shepherd s hut. This is unusual for shepherds huts. Historical documents record that this hut had a brick chimney. All agree that the Tulloch sketch is looking easterly. The shadows in the sketch confirm this. The meeting is clearly being held on the high ground behind the shepherd s hut. The land Heritage Victoria purchased is to the north of the hut. I think it is fair to say Heritage Victoria is prepared to change history in order to save face. The Goldfields Historical & Arts Society will take submissions from all parties on the subject., then hold an independent enquiry where Heritage Victoria and others can explain their views. Neighbouring historical societies and the Prospectors & Miners Association of Victoria have expressed interest in sending a representative to form a panel. HISTORICAL TOUR OF MOLIAGUL Visitors are welcome on this Goldfields Historical & Arts Society tour to the goldfield of Moliagul. This tour will include visits to sites of former Chinese gardens, the Chinese riot and Chinese hotel. Travel will be by private cars. Bring your own lunch and chair. Car-pooling preferred. 11 6th September 2017 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 32 Issue 33 Page 11 This week s value in focus is: Respect - Understanding Considering the feelings of others Around school this week: Thinkers were winners! Our maths games night included some great competitive action between parents and students. It was a fun way to celebrate Literacy and Numeracy week by showcasing how easy maths games are to play while practising our numeracy skills. Congratulations to our 16 students who competed at the MDPSSA athletics. You are all superstars to us and we will know in the next few days who has qualified to go to Bendigo. REMINDER: Please name jackets and jumpers. As the weather is warming up, students are starting to take layers off during the day. The lost property cupboard is now located inside the Multipurpose building. HOME READING: this is such a vital key in the development of students reading. Taking the time to share a book each night, hear your child read, or create an oral story together has proven to increase your child s reading development. We can become very busy by the end of the day so a good tip is to make it a set time e.g. after bath/shower or at a nominated time. Signing your child s diary after they ve read to/with you not only motivates them to read more by accumulating the number of nights read, but encourages them to be proactive in their organisational skills by using the diary.

14 Page 14 Volume 32 Issue 34 THE WELCOME RECORD 6th September 2017 Finals Fever "Hello, my name is Kathy Kookaburra Smith and welcome to Sports Wrap here on Central Victoria Community Radio. Today we cover the wash-up from the highly anticipated 2017 Grand Final between the Rhinos and the Avians. And worthy contestants they were too. All year these two teams have been swapping places at the top of the table and were deserved Grand Finalists. A big and colourful, if somewhat diverse, crowd was in attendance. The atmosphere at the ground was, as they say, electric. Okay, so on to the main event. I know this is a cliché, but it really was a game of two halves. Both sides began by searching for weaknesses up front while still maintaining a heavy reliance on defence. No side was willing to commit to an attacking strategy that would leave them vulnerable at the back. At the long break neither team was in the ascendancy, and the scores were locked up. I took the opportunity to visit the Rhino's dressing rooms and recorded coach Uda Rhino White's half-time address....here's what she had to say... " What are we? Rhinos! How do we play? Like Rhinos! What do we charge like? Rhinos! How do we win? LIKE RHINOS! Who are the opposition? I'll tell you what they are - a bunch of turkeys! So get out there and wring their turkey necks! YEAH! COME ON! Well I must say that Uda Rhino White really knows how to motivate her team. I could see the intent in their eyes as they stampeded back on to the ground in preparation for the second half. And my! How the feathers did fly. The Rhinos ran rampant, charging the Avians at every opportunity. Stalwart Avian players such as Wendy Wagtail Jones and Lara Lapwing Ackers were overwhelmed and simply took flight in the face of such determined aggression. Henrietta Heron Wright used her long legs and stride to advantage but even she was no match for the marauding Rhinos. As an impartial observer, it seemed to me that Uda Rhino White's team were able to pluck goals from anywhere on the ground. The score had mounted up by the final siren with the Rhinos running out convincing winners. The soundlydefeated Avian team flocked from the field in haste, embarrassed by their second half performance. So, congratulations to the champions and we can't wait for the competition to start again next season. Stay tuned for Tales From The Water-hole and I'll leave you with a final word from star player Jill Rhino Black... " "We played like beasts today, eh!" The game was a relatively even match throughout, with Harcourt up by 1 goal at half time. Dunolly steadied in the 3 rd quarter to capitalise on the turnovers caused by Harcourt and played with ice in their veins to run out the game winners by 2 points. Final score Dunolly 21 to Harcourt 19. Better players were Caitlin for a fantastic game in goals, only missing 1 out of 18 goals at 95% accuracy, Charlee for a great defensive game and Briella for her strong drive up the court. This week Dunolly take on Trentham at Princes Park on Saturday 9 th September in the Preliminary Finals at 11:30 am. Make sure to pop down and watch the future of our club. What superstars! 19 6th September 2017 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 32 Issue 33 Page 19 The Road to Nhill Pyramid Hill will be celebrating 20 years since the release of the Australian drama-comedy Road to Nhill, which was filmed in the town, with special matinee and evening screenings. Planned for Saturday, 16 September at 2pm and 8pm at the Memorial Hall, the event is part of the Naturally Loddon Spring Festival. Directed by former Pyramid Hill resident Sue Brooks, the film is based on a real-life car accident in the town that occurred on the way home from a bowls game. Ms Brooks explained that the inspiration for the film had originated from stories her father, Alan Brooks, told her when she was younger. My father used to tell us fabulous shaggy dog tales from Pyramid Hill, Ms Brooks said. They were always based on a true story but they had often been embellished along the way. They were always funny. One day he told us this story of a car load of lady-bowlers who tipped their car on the way home from a bowls tournament and the ambulance went out along the wrong road. Alison [Tilson] thought this story would make a good film, so she started writing the script of Road to Nhill. Filming for Road to Nhill took eight weeks, with six weeks preproduction. We took over the town for the best part of four months, Ms Brooks added. The local community were extraordinary. The film is based on a community and the script was like a giant jigsaw puzzle. We needed countless locations, people's homes, farms and stock. We took over the golf club as our offices. We filmed in the store, the fire brigade shed, the stock and station agent s, the streets, the butcher s, the local garage, the police station, the bowls club, the hospital and the Uniting Church, she said. We filmed in countless kitchens, gardens and farms and roads. We dug a trench out on Bobby Gibson s paddock and filmed the scenes with the women hanging upside down in the car. We blocked the real road to Cohuna and filmed the accident site out there, making all of the local trucks go on a very big detour. Every time we filmed a scene that had the store clock in the background, Ian Bartels had to come in from wherever he was working at the time and adjust the clock for the right time for our scene. There was hardly a person in town during those eight to 12 weeks who wasn t involved somehow. Ms Brooks said that overall there was a great sense of pride in the film among the community at the time. Some people thought it was fantastic and the best film ever made and some were not so sure. I think a lot of people were not so much interested in the story as to whose kitchen we were filming in, which road we were on, or who in the film a character in the film was based on. The film does reflect the giant enterprise from the whole town. Road to Nhill ran in Australian cinemas for more than nine months with writer Alison Tilson receiving an AFI nomination for Best Screenplay and Composer Elizabeth Drake an AFI nomination for Best Original Music Score. The film also screened in countless international film festivals, winning two major international film festival prizes and sold all over the world. Ms Brooks said the film often comes up as a person s favourite Australian film and academics often quote it. It was a showcase of some of our most revered Australian actors, many of whom have since died Monica Maughan, Bill Hunter, Patricia Kennedy, Lois Ramsey, Paul Chubb and Bob Hornery, she added. Event organiser Jean Mann said locals had some great memories of the filming and the screening would be an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the film s 20-year anniversary. It s also a chance to recognise how it promotes community connectedness and togetherness, Ms Mann added. We are keen to share the movie with the whole generation who weren't born then and for those of us who were living away at the time. Road to Nhill will screen at 2pm and 8pm at the Pyramid Hill Memorial Hall on Saturday, 16 September (bar opens at 7pm). Afternoon tea and supper will follow both screenings.
