1 LAKE HAUTO CLUB NEWSLETTER SPRING 2017 Editor: Kim Thomas PRESIDENT S MESSAGE By George Demetriades Spring 2017 has finally arrived, but it came in like a lion. The snowstorm on March 14 th gave us upwards of 18 plus inches of snow. Thanks to Jimmy, Terry, and Paul for all your hard work in keeping our roads open. The ice on the lake melted earlier than usual this year due to some higher temperatures. The lake is back up to its normal depth since the opening and then closing of the valve last fall. The valve was open to lower the lake so that repair work could be done at our beaches. As of this writing, maintenance is working on the docks and slips for all four of the beaches. Dock D at Crescent Beach has been replaced. Also, we were able to build a second dock to be installed at Oakwood Beach. This dock should be very much appreciated by all the members who have been waiting years to have a boat at Oakwood. We ll send out an when they are installed and ready for you to launch your boats. The anticipated date is the beginning to mid-may for all of the docks to be installed. Beach tags and wrist bands, as well as boat and RV stickers are available for pickup in the office. The only thing that is still due yet (by April 30 th ) would be the road assessment if you have not paid it already. The road project is moving along nicely and we hope to get started within the next few weeks. The board decided to secure a loan in the amount of the 7 year assessment so that we can do the remaining roads that have not been repaved to date. The board discussed this and felt that this would be the best way to maximize the amount of roads that could be repaired and avoid a higher cost 7 years from now. As the weather gets nicer and the days go by, members are out walking with their family and/or pets. Please remember to drive the speed limits and drive safely. Also, please be considerate and continue to clean up after your pets. If our members are respectful and considerate to their neighbors, the rules would take care of themselves. There would be no need for the board to enforce or pass any additional rules. Your participation in this will make for a more enjoyable season. Thank you in advance. There are a lot of activities coming up. The annual Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled for April 15 th. We are going to have a large turnout as usual. It is a fun day for all children and their families. The BYOB Pallet Paint will be on April 23 rd, and the Children s Fishing Derby is scheduled for May 6 th. We also have more events planned for all ages/members to enjoy in the upcoming season. You should have received a letter in the mail requesting donations for this summer s entertainment. The letter is included later in this newsletter, along with a list of all our generous donators from last summer. The list of events already scheduled is listed in this newsletter. As always we appreciate your donations. Any donation, no matter how small, is appreciated and it all adds up to a wonderful summer of entertainment. Thank you in advance for your contributions! Our volunteers continue to help our community to be the best that it can be. Thank you to all. If anyone is interested in joining any committees, please contact the office or any board member. 3 Fish Committee By Bob Davidovich The fishing season has now started at Lake Hauto. A fishing committee has been organized in order to bring individuals together who are interested in improving our fishery. The first meeting was in January and was well attended. We will be meeting again on April 23 at the community center. We are putting together a contact list in order to keep interested parties informed. If you wish to participate, please attend the next meeting or send me your contact information at doitbest@ptd.net or call me at The committee decided that April 15 th will be the opening day for trout at the lake. The lake will be stocked with trout on April 13 th at 5pm. 200 trout will be stocked at Oakwood, Eastwood and Crescent Beach. It was also decided to stock 100 trout at the Birch Pools Pond. The lake and the pond are closed to trout fishing until opening day on April 15th. There is a 3 trout limit per day. Birch Pools Pond will be stocked again for the Children s Fishing Derby which will be held on May 6 th 9am until noon. The pond will be closed for fishing on May 3 rd in order to stock the 300 trout for this event. This event is opened to all children 15 and younger. All interested parties are being asked to register in advance at the club office. The registration fee is $3.00 per child. Additional donations are greatly appreciated and can also be made at this time prior to the derby. We will have drinks and snacks available for the children. There will be a 5 fish limit on the opening day of the derby and a 3 fish limit after opening day. A child will be allowed 1 fishing rod. Fishing will be with bait only; no artificial lures will be allowed. All fish caught must be kept. These rules will be strictly enforced this year and violators will be disqualified and asked to leave. There will be 3 divisions: children 5 years and under, 6 to 10 years and 11 to 15 years. There will be a prize for each boy and girl within each division who catches the first limit of 5 fish. If a limit of 5 fish is not caught, the child with the most fish within their division will be awarded the prize. There will also be a trophy and prize for the child who catches the largest fish. In addition, we will be stocking 40 fish with tags. Each tag will have a number and any child catching a tagged fish will be awarded a corresponding prize. After the 12 noon end of the derby any child who catches a tagged fish can redeem the tag at the club office until May 13 th. There will be a 2 prize limit per child after the noon closing of the derby. The pond will remain closed to adults until Sunday May 14 th. The 3 trout limit and the bait only rule will be enforced. 12 Note: After 4 months of collecting information, our committee realized that our book project on the history of Lake Hauto needs more time to process. As an alternative, our decision is to host a column in the Lake Hauto quarterly newsletter where we can share some of our new-found information. Not only will this help us organize our thoughts and information, but hopefully pique the interest of our readers, so that they might contribute their own stories, information, and pictures over time.
