1 LAKE HAUTO CLUB NEWSLETTER WINTER 2014 Editor: Kim Thomas PRESIDENT S MESSAGE By Kenneth Snyder Summer has come and gone and it was great. The summer was filled with live bands on Eastwood and Crescent Beaches and fireworks on the Fourth of July and Labor Day. We are contracted for the fireworks the same time next year. The bands and fireworks were paid for through donations of approximately $15,000. The beaches, playgrounds, baseball field and tennis courts were all used. We cleaned the tennis courts this year with our maintenance crew and a board member to bring them back to life. Living in Lake Hauto, who needs to go on a vacation every day is a vacation! Roads: In 2014, the assessment for roads allowed us to grind down and repave about 6,000 feet of Lake Drive. The total cost was approximately $256,000. The current assessment did not allow for us to complete Lake Drive out to Eastwood Gate, so we will bid and complete as much as possible in 2015 and hope to complete the project in The newly paved Lake Drive is very smooth and traffic is moving faster, so please watch your speed and slow down. Beaches: Fifteen truckloads (330 tons) of sand were added to our beaches. Zero O Beach Construction: We had it surveyed to determine the property lines. We installed a pipe to control water runoff in the beach area. The future plans for Zero Beach are to build a pavilion, have two or three parking lots, build a new road from the second level to the lower level in order to provide access to the boat launch and service the beach, and finally, relocate the boat docks. Eastwood Beach: The remodeling is completed. We are going to add some ground cover on the bank going up to the tennis courts next spring. The docks have been taken to the shop and are being completely rebuilt by our crew for next season. We plan to work on the basketball court in The boat launch was inspected this fall and found to be in very good condition, but we did some general maintenance, like filling cracks with concrete when the water was down. Crescent Beach: 2014 was the first year we had the office open all year round. Due to the growth of Lake Hauto, we felt this was necessary to provide both convenience and service to our members. We made some adjustments to the lifeguard chair so the guard has a better view of the water. Our plans for 2015, providing the budget allows, is to build a fishing dock on the east side of the beach and blacktop the small section where members park to go into the office. Water Level: The water level was lowered 2 to 3 feet for us to do dam maintenance which should be good for 5 or 10 years. The spillway required an extreme amount of work in order to preserve the integrity for years to come. We used special packing and a caulking system to make these repairs up top and at the bottom of the spillway, where there were very large gaps. We used 20 yards of concrete to make the repairs. Security: Our 2015 budget for security is the same amount as Having gates, cameras and mobile security during the summer, we feel is sufficient coverage for our community. For additional coverage a panning camera was added at Crescent Beach which moves continuously across the Beach. Gates: The gates have special cameras that read license plates. If you accidentally hit the gates, call the office and inform them. If we have to review the recorded footage, there will be an administration fee charged to the person that damaged the gates. This administration fee will be in addition to the repair cost. Our maintenance crew received training to reset the gates when they are not working properly, so please contact the office if you observe the gates not working properly please call the office and they will attend to the problem. Recreation: We are purchasing a playground set for Eastwood at a cost of approximately $11,000, which includes installation. Oakwood will get a new kiddie swing set. Recreation also takes care of the Christmas and Halloween parties which are paid for mostly by donations and the balance from the Club s recreation budget. I would like to thank the volunteers that took care of these two parties, they did a great job! The Christmas party this year was on a Sunday afternoon and had horse and carriage rides which were exciting for all the children and adults as well. The food, games and Mr. & Mrs. Claus s yearly visit were all a hit. (President s Message continued on next page.) LAKE HAUTO CLUB PAGE 1 WINTER 2014

2 President s Message Continued: Fishing: The Lake will be stocked again this year with feeder fish and legal size for fishing. The fishing derby is held at Birch pool, where we continue to have great success. In 2014, the prizes were based on the size of the fish and not how many fish were caught. The fishing derby participants also enjoyed the pizza and drinks. We will continue this in Legal: We have one lawsuit in process, which is over the installation of a drainage pipe on Lake Club s property by a member. She had no permission to put the drainage pipe on Club property and the member is suing the Club for reimbursement of the cost to do so. It doesn t seem right that all the members should pay for the illegal action of one member. I will provide you the result of our appeal to the County Court. Member Picnic: 2014 s picnic had a great turnout. The food was served all afternoon, and once again, the ice cream truck was a big hit. The volunteers did a great job. We are planning to have the Members picnic again in July or August of Hope to see you all there! Community Center: We are taking out the louver windows in the library area of the coffee shop and closing them off. They leak air and some of them would not close. We are insulating the remainder of the wall and finishing it with T1-11 on the front. In the meeting room, we are taking the chandeliers down and putting up recessed lighting, putting new, high-efficient windows with low E glass and argon gas, taking out the air-conditioning unit in the wall that is no longer necessary because of having central heat and air. We are closing off the door for a concession booth, checking all receptacles and switches to be sure they are in working order, putting new fluorescent lighting in the ceiling, plaster boarding the entire room and finishing with a fresh coat of paint and new carpeting. The toilets and vanities in the restrooms of the coffee shop area are being replaced and the walls will be repainted. In phase 2, the coffee shop will be getting a new tile floor. Library: The library is completed. You now need to enter a code to get into the front door. The code is 1357 to open it and you need to enter the work Schlage and reenter the code when you are leaving to lock the door. Stop by at your convenience to take a look. We have three walls full of books to read. It was a long-time coming, but it was worth the wait. Walking Trails / Green belts: It is our intention to add stone on the trails where necessary, to make it easier for people to walk on. This has not been done for years. The walking trails are also known as the green belts. Lily pads: We are going to harvest the lily pads. We are looking at a machine to rent that looks like a paddle boat to harvest them. If that doesn t work, we will purchase a cutter that our maintenance crew can use to harvest them. Main Entrance: Rush Township is going to replace the guard rails on the right-hand side going into the Lake. They are 50-years-old, rotted out, and are not safe. Rush Township also gives us 2 truck axles (44 tons) of salt for us to snowplow and salt the portion of Lake Drive that Rush Township owns during the winter season. Leaf Dump: We had a temporary entrance to our leaf dump when we did the logging of the timber. When we fix the shoulder, the state will give us a permanent HOP (highway occupancy permit) for light use. When using the leaf dump, pushback as far as you can so we don t have to push your brush back with a bulldozer more than twice a year. No plastic bags, lumber, building materials, stumps or large rocks. This is for leaves only. Reserves: For the past five years, we were able to put money into the reserves for future use. We anticipate putting funds into the reserve again this year. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All!
