Our State Elks Convention was held in Caldwell the first weekend in June. Caldwell did a great job hosting the convention, the food was excellent. There were many new, young faces which is good to see. Among the many things covered at the convention was how the hospital is transitioning into a program supporting rehab across all the state. Individual lodges will have the opportunity to obtain a $1000 grant for a local rehab program this summer. I have one proposal for that at the time of this writing. For making our ENF goal last year, we received a check for $413 to go into our charity account. Steve Johnson is the new V.P. South (our district) and our new District Deputy will be Lyle Gesford. We were also informed that we got third place in All American Lodge for our size lodge nationally! What an accomplishment! We did put in for a convention in 2016 however, the lodge vote the last of May was challenged (as is a member's right) and therefore we had to put the bid in as smoking. We were turned down based on our smoking policy. The trustees did an excellent job of preparing food and drink costs and there was not an issue with these. The State Association requires all lodges bidding on a convention be willing to go temporarily non smoking around the time of convention. In our July meeting we will discuss the option of bidding again and vote on convention/temporary non smoking again. The lodge does make a considerable amount, that goes into the general fund, from a convention (I have the profit statement from our previous convention several years ago). Of course, the staff gains hours and tips from a convention and it helps our employees families. I believe the lodge could definitely use the money!. Several members at our June 9th meeting discussed the positive business aspect of holding a convention. However, I do understand the smokers right to protest the convention, thus preserving their right to come here and smoke. They are members, too. The only way is for a vote and all involved compromise. That is how an organization works. It is not my organization, not trustees organization or any one person's organization...this belong to the members! All of you! Register at
