Three of our coaches Mick Woods Lawrence Alston and Evan Walsh went round with the shooters giving valuable advice where needed. The targets at Blackpool were ideal with a good mixture of easy ones combined with some more difficult targets go give everyone a chance to enjoy the shoo ng. Some had to leave early to a end a mee ng but others enjoyed a good lunch at the Eagle & Child Weeton. It was nice to see the return of John Taylor, one of our first members together with Tom Blackburn another one of our founders. Tom did not shoot but took great pleasure watching his grandchildren perform be er than he could. All present said they were in favour of the new format for our friendly shoots, travelling to different grounds. 2 Skeet Shooting Skeet is one of the three major disciplines of compe ve clay pigeon shoo ng. The others are trap shoo ng and spor ng clays. There are several types of skeet, including one with Olympic status. The event is in part meant to simulate the ac on of bird hun ng. The shooter shoots from seven posi ons on a semicircle with a radius of 21 yards (19 m), and an eighth posi on halfway between sta ons 1 and 7. There are two houses that hold devices known as "traps" that launch the targets, one at each corner of the semicircle. The traps launch the targets to a point 15 feet above ground and 18 feet outside of sta on 8. One trap launches targets from 10 feet above the ground ("high" house) and the other launches it from 3 feet above ground ("low" house). Skeet shoo ng was invented by Charles Davis of Andover, Massachuse s, an avid grouse hunter, in the 1920 as a sport called Clock Shoo ng. The original course was a circle with a radius of 25 yards with its circumference marked off like the face of a clock and a trap set at the 12 o clock posi on. The prac ce of shoo ng from all direc ons had to cease, however, when a chicken farm started next door. The game evolved to its current setup by 1923 when one of the shooters, William Harnden Foster, solved the problem by placing a second trap at the 6 o clock posi on and cu ng the course in half. Foster quickly no ced the appeal of this kind of compe on shoo ng, and set out to make it a na onal sport. The game was introduced in the February 1926 issue of Na onal Sportsman and Hun ng and Fishing magazines, and a prize of 100 dollars was offered to anyone who could come up with a name for the new sport. The winning entry was "skeet" chosen by Gertrude Hurlbu. The word "skeet" was said to be derived from the Norwegian word for "shoot" (skyte). During World War II, skeet was used in the military to teach gunners the principle of leading and ming on a flying target. Blackpool Gun Club founded in 1923 was used extensively for this purpose Join us on our friendly shoots - for dates see the website - Friendly shoot 21st October Report A visit to North Wales Shoo ng School at Sealand brought out our some of our members to try the spor ng layout & high tower. We managed to dodge the torren al showers by enjoying a full English breakfast in the clubhouse 2 Skeet Competition 28th September 2014 Another shoot off was needed to decide the second skeet compe- on held at Toplands Clay Ground by kind permission of the owner Roy Dransfield. Many of our new members turned up to have a go at this compe on and most fared very well. The favourite going into the compe on Graham Brereton, he had recently done a 25 straight, fell by the wayside early on leaving Evan Walsh & Jason Rhodes on 22 to e the lead. In the shoot off Evan beat Jason by 2 clays to 1. The Scores were: Evan Walsh Jason Rhodes Mike Casey 17 Mick Woods 16 Graham Brereton 15 Ian Turner 15 Chris Ridgeway 11 Peter Greathead 10 Peter Sayle 10 Trevor Hunt 10 Ed Fisher 9 The rest declined to have the scores published
3 The Watson Eden Trophy It was July 1984 when Rt W Bro Rev William E A Pugh the PGM for Cumberland & Westmorland challenged Rt W Bro Alan Fletcher Ferris, PGM for West Lancashire, to a Clay Shoo ng Compe on. West Lancashire Caps W Bro Tom Blackburn who was at the me the Provincial DC was given the instruc on Go and bring this trophy to West Lancashire The trophy in ques on is the Watson Eden Trophy. W Bro Bill Watson was a member of Ennerdale Lodge and Chairman of the Cumbria South West Group. His good friend W Bro Eden owned a Gun Shop and they provided the trophy which is s ll the coveted prize today. Tom Blackburn formed a team to shoot on behalf of West Lancashire at Cockermouth on 21 st October They brought the trophy home. The Second Shoot was held on the 13 th October 1985 at Caton, Nr Lancaster, when East Lancashire joined in and unfortunately they won the trophy. Since it s incep on West Lancashire have won the Trophy 19 mes; East Lancashire 7, West Yorkshire 3 mes and North Yorkshire once. Inter Provincial Shoot 5th October 2013 On Sunday 5 th October the Province of Cumberland and Westmorland hosted the 30 th Inter Provincial Shoot at Penrith Gun club, Bowscar near Penrith. The event, which raised over 1100 for Chari es, was well a ended by the Provinces of Cumberland & Westmorland, North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and West Lancashire. Over 60 shooters took part in the 50 bird compe on over 5 stands although as 2 stands used the same traps and this did cause quite a hold up and frustra on for some of the entries. The prizes were presented by V.W. Bro. Keith Young PGSwdB, the Deputy Provincial Grand Master for the Province of Cumberland & Westmorland in the Ullswater Suite at the Stoneybeck Inn where we enjoyed lunch. Thanks to the hard work of Eunice Wrennall, helped by Joyce Brereton, the scores were available a er lunch and once again West Lancashire showed the way, this me with a clear margin. Our team consis ng of Wayne Parrington, Jason Rhodes, Ian Heyes, Glynn Wrennall, John Whi aker and Mike Casey scored 243, Cumberland & Westmorland 184, West Yorkshire 183 and North Yorkshire 161. The Watson Eden Trophy came back with us. High Gun for West Lancashire, who won the Les Jennings Hoole Trophy, was Wayne Parrington who scored 45. Jason Rhodes with 43 won the Donna Heyes Trust Trophy and Andrew Smith from Hawkshead Lodge won the Graham Brereton Trophy. Winners of all our shoots, and all those who went to the Na onal Championships, this year have received a West Lancashire Cap. If you have not won one, and would like one please order via our website New Trophies for West Lancashire members Tom Blackburn and John Taylor, both of whom competed for West Lancashire, in the first Inter Provincial Shoot 30 years ago joined us for lunch. John shot the compe on as well and turned in a creditable score. Next year the compe on will he hosted by the Province of North Yorkshire 3

Some of our members shoot the Annual Gamekeepers Shoot at this ground but it is the first me we have been for the 50 spor ng targets held on the 1st Sunday of each month. Two stands in par cular were very difficult and brought the scores down but Graham Brereton shot well to lead Christmas Turkey Shoot 7th December A very cold day at Hesketh Bank for this years Turkey Shoot.. The much improved ground which now has 9 stands put on some very tes ng targets With 25 entries this was well a ended even though some old faces were missing.
