3 Today is Sep 2, Rick and my wedding anniversary. It's a bittersweet day. We celebrate on either or both July 1 and Sep 2. We were married by the Justice of the Peace on July 1, and in the church on Sep 2. So, if we miss the first one, we get a second chance. It is also the day we were supposed to be taking off to Wing Ding. We were really looking forward to it. However, our budget, vacation days, and spirit are all drained at the moment. Rick and I want to thank each and every one of you for your prayers, thoughts, words of comfort, and cards during the last few rough couple of weeks. For those that do not know, Rick's mom passed away in August after a long struggle with emphysema. We were in Sweetwater TN attending her funeral when our daughter in law passed way in Wapakoneta at the age of 32. She had been married to our son only 2 weeks and they were getting ready to go on a cruise honeymoon. It came to light after her death that she had a liver disease and an alcohol addiction. She was well loved, had a bubbly personality, and very pleasant to be around. It was a surprise to many of us that she had this disease because she was extremely adept at keeping it a secret. This has shaken us to our core, as well as our perceptions of alcoholism. She had a tattoo of a lightning bolt on her back, signifying strength, and many of us are getting lightning bolt tattoos as a memorial. Her favorite song sung in her church was Lord of The Dance. I would like to share a part of it here: "I danced on a Friday when the world turned black. It s hard to dance with the devil on your back. They buried my body, they thought I was gone. But I am the dance, and the dance goes on." Things come in 3s, right? Tonight we are attending a viewing for Rick's part time business partner in the lawn care business, who was a friend that lived just down the street from us. He passed away Monday after a few weeks in ICU after a motorcycle accident. We think he had a heart attack while riding. He was not a helmet rider, and not sure if that would have saved him in this case. So, as we try to settle back into normalcy, I know things will never quite be the same, but the dance goes on. I do have a few notes I made before all of this happened, and we were still planning on attending Wing Ding. Rick and I were discussing the route we would take to get to Wing Ding. I have a strong personal preference to avoid highways if possible, and found a website I'd like to share called myscenicdrives.com I also wanted point out a tip Sylvia spoke about at a meeting recently. She mentioned that one way to protect your financial security is to get a credit freeze. I had never heard of that when she mentioned it. However, since that time, I have seen articles and advice from both of my favorite financial people, Clark Howard and Dave Ramsey, about what a good idea a credit freeze is for protection. So, until next time Ride Safe!! Your ACDs Rick and Amy Jenkins 3

5 Subject: Keeping Your Co-Rider Happy When riding two up, both the rider and co-rider have responsibilities. In this month s article I m going to talk about the Rider Responsibilities with a Co-Rider. We all know that riding with a co-rider is more difficult than riding one up. The rider can make it easier for the co-rider by following a few simple guidelines. 1. Make your co-rider as comfortable as possible. If your co-rider is miserable, you will be too, so, do whatever you have to make her (or him) comfortable. Passenger floorboards or foot pegs should be adjusted so that your co-rider s thighs are parallel with the ground. If she wants arm rests put them on; it s a small price to pay for the added comfort and security that your co-rider will gain from them. Install Air Wings - your co-rider gets more windblast than you do because she sits higher, and she doesn t get as much protection from the fairing or windscreen as the rider does. 2. Carrying a co-rider tests your riding ability. You should be able to shift smoothly enough to avoid bumping helmets and your stops and departures should also be smooth and gentle. An added benefit is you will get better gas mileage by being smooth. 3. If there is a big bump in the road ahead, warn your co-rider. Her spine is right over the rear axle of the motorcycle. It hurts her more than you, when you hit a hard bump or rough road. When you warn the co-rider, she can get prepared to better absorb the shock from the bump and she will be more comfortable. 4. Communicate with you co-rider. If for instance, you are coming upon road debris, let her know. This should prompt the corider to be prepared for the upcoming evasive maneuver. This way both of you will be more in sync with the bike during the maneuver and she will not be surprised. Next month my article will be on the role of the co-rider when riding two up. 9 LINDA S LESSON: I am very conscientious about safety with the motorcycle and the riding gear. I had kept a close watch on my tires and after about 17,000 miles on the tires of my motorcycle, I knew at Region D I would be putting on new tires. I always tell the mechanic if I won t make it until the next tire change without needing new brakes to go ahead and replace the brakes. On my ride home from Region D rally it was nice to have new tires and brakes. As we were receiving s from the district team about everyone returning home, we received an from our District Educator, Robert G. and Angela Williams that they had a problem with a front tire on their motorhome. All of this information gave me an idea for my newsletter article this month. I have borrowed the following information from Robert G who pulled the following explanation from a website called Tire Rack.com Determining the Age of a Tire When it comes to determining the age of a tire, it is easy to identify when a tire was manufactured by reading its Tire Identification Number (often referred to as the tire's serial number). Unlike vehicle identification numbers (VINs) and the serial numbers used on many other consumer goods (which identify one specific item), Tire Identification Numbers are really batch codes that identify the week and year the tire was produced. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) requires that Tire Identification Numbers be a combination of the letters DOT, followed by ten, eleven or twelve letters and/or numbers that identify the manufacturing location, tire size and manufacturer's code, along with the week and year the tire was manufactured. "When it comes to determining the age of a tire, it is easy to identify when a tire was manufactured by reading its Tire Identification Number (often referred to as the tire's serial number)." Tires Manufactured Since Since 2000, the week and year the tire was produced has been provided by the last four digits of the Tire Identification Number with the 2 digits being used to identify the week immediately preceding the 2 digits used to identify the year. Example of a tire manufactured since 2000 with the current Tire Identification Number format - In the example below: DOT U2LL LMLR 5107 DOT U2LL LMLR 5107 Manufactured during the 51st week of the year 2007 While the entire Tire Identification Number is required to be branded onto one sidewall of every tire, current regulations also require that DOT and the first digits of the Tire Identification Number must also be branded onto the opposite sidewall. Therefore, it is possible to see a Tire Identification Number that appears incomplete and requires looking at the tire's other sidewall to find the entire Tire Identification Number The use of a partial Tire Identification Number on the one sidewall (shown above) reduces the risk of injury to the mold technician that would have to install the weekly date code on the top sidewall portion of a hot tire mold. Tires Manufactured Before 2000 The Tire Identification Number for tires produced prior to 2000 was based on the assumption that tires would not be in service for ten years. While they were required to provide the same information as today's tires, the week and year the tire was produced was contained in the last three digits. The 2 digits used to identify the week a tire was manufactured immediately preceded a single digit used to identify the year. Example of a tire manufactured before 2000 with the earlier Tire Identification Number format: DOT EJ8J DFM 408 Manufactured during the 40th week of the 8th year of the decade Rider Education - LINDA S LESSON continued from page 9: 9

10 While the previous Tire Identification Number format identified that a tire was built in the 8th year of a decade, there was no universal identifier that confirmed which decade (tires produced in the 1990s may have a small triangle following the Tire Identification Number to identify the decade). And finally, hold on to your sales receipt. Most tire manufacturer's warranties cover their tires for four years from the date of purchase or five years from the week the tires were manufactured. So if you purchase new tires that were manufactured exactly two years ago they will be covered for a total of six years (four years from the date of purchase) as long as you have your receipt. If you lose your receipt, your tires' warranty coverage will end five years from the week the tire was produced (resulting in the tire manufacturer's warranty coverage ending only three years from the date of purchase in this example). Paying attention to one s tires is extremely important since we only have two or three tires on the motorcycle. Yes there are a few kits that put four tires on the cycle which still means it is important to pay attention to tires. So it is important to keep the rubber side down. Linda Copeland Ch. F Senior CE (Chapter Educator June 16th: A beautiful day started out with 7 bikes and 13 people.
