1 NOC GEM & MINERAL SOCIETY NEWS Vol. 29 No, 5 May 2010 President s Message by Don Watthen It s Time for the show. We have just a little more than one month until the show. Things are starting to come together and I believe we are going to have a very fine show. We have four venues at the University (numbers are approximate) 1) In the Café, we will have 7 dealers and 10 cases, and in the room adjacent to the Café we will have 44 cases. 2) In the GYM we will have 26 dealers, the spinning wheel, and the Donation Drawing. 3) In the Pavilion we will have another four dealers and Walt s Wood display. 4) In the Speaker Auditorium we will have Walt Wright, Bob Jones, and Tony Finder. Robyn will have some special programs in the Herb Garden. Robyn has also lined up some great field trips following the show. Robyn has put a lot of effort in helping in more than one project and I Thank you Robyn. Our Daughter, Stella, & Ofelia s cousin, David, have worked diligently in making two great banners that will be installed at the University the week of June 1 st. Richard has been working very hard in creating some great advertisements coming out in most of the surrounding local papers. Yolanda and Randi have sorted and cataloged the items for the donation awards. There are still a few rough edges we need to smooth out. There will be a meeting next week to address some of these areas. We still need help with setup on Thursday and takedown on Sunday Night as well as help during the show with the doors, spinning wheel and other functions. A big item, we need Security Guards for all 3-nights. Please sign up. 3 May Education Report By Ofelia Warthen, Chairman April 27 ended our series of our Craft Project Classes at the Community Center. They were very well attended. Everyone was very pleased with what they learned that all have requested we have more classes later in the fall. One of our teachers, Fran Swanston will be demonstrating at Pomona Fair Grounds May 14 thru 16. Fran is a very special person and very excited to teach others. Thank you Fran! I heard from Ms. Judy Guy, teacher at the Brea Country Hills Elementary School, expressing interest in having the Club put on another earth science presentation later in the fall. So, you wonderful teachers start preparing, lets make this another exciting event for her students. Ms. Guy also desires information about our June Gem Show. I will take flyers and information for her students and families to attend. Lapidary classes will resume after our June Gem Show. May Birthstone is Emerald The name emerald derives from the Greek Smaragdos. It means green stone. Emerald, together with aquamarine and beryl, belongs to the beryl group, being the most precious of the group. Emeralds are formed by rising magma and metamorpihism. Deposits are therefore found mainly in or near pegmatite veins. The most important deposits are in Colombia, especially the Muzo Mine west from Bogota. Mined by the Incas, abandoned and later rediscovered in the 17 th century. Emerald deposits were discovered in 1830 in the Urals north of Swerdlowsk. The host rock is a biotite mica shale, interfoliated with talc and chloride. Good qualities are rare. Most stones are opaque, turbid and slightly yellow-green. Mohs hardness is 7 ½ - 8. Cleavage is none. Submitted by Ofelia Warthen, Education Chairman REF: Gemstones of the world by Walter Schumann Presidents Message Continued On May 14 th, 15 th, & 16 th is the commercial show at Pomona, we have a table there to publicize the show. 4 NOC General Meeting Minutes La Habra Community Center April 13, 2010 Nancy Bird for Jay Valle The meeting was called to order by President Don Warthen at 6:45 P.M. He led the Pledge of Allegiance.. The minutes of the last meeting were read by Dave Swanson standing in for Jay Valle. The minutes were approved as read. The treasurer s report was given. Don Warthen on the show reported that the gym building has less square feet than believed so cases qare going to be put where we were having the kid s room and the kid s area will be outside. In another development, the large glass building became available and Walt Wright will have 130+ polished and named petrified wood slabs and 3 dealers. Total we will have 33 dealers and all are signed up. This is a big show and we need a lot of people to help. Thursday before the show will be the the set-up and then food for the helpers. The grab bag bagging will be at the Warthens May A. M. then a pot-luck lunch. Please come. Good Morning La Habra will be May 27 where we will present our show to the Chamber and business community (and supply breakfast) at 7 A. M. We need people to attend, bring food, and sell tickets. We did the Spring Citrus Fair last weekend. We gave out 425 bags of Dino bone. A lot of club members were there helping. Don Warthen contacted the West Coast Gem and Mineral show to be held at the Pomona fairgrounds and they will let us set up a table to advertise our show. The committee reports Federation, field trips, library, education. Refreshments were brought by the Burns and Turners, next month the Warthens. All members are asked to come to the banquet the Saturday night of the show. We had a good speaker and slide show on the gems of Afghanistan with displays. Arianna Gems is usually one of our dealers. 5 A Field Trip to the Rocky Mtn Fed Show By Namcy Bird Last month I flew to to Oklahoma to visit friends who I helped move there last year. Deborah had become my rockhound buddy in recent years and she looked up shows in the area before I came and when she asked me if I d like to go to the Rocky Mountain Federation Show hosted by the Wichita Gem & Mineral Society, I said sure! So I contacted the show chair, Gene Maggard, for directions and in the course of our conversation he invited us to the Federation banquet and we got discount rates for being Federation people. We arrived at the show after a 31/2 hr. drive. We had lunch across from three fellows from the Tulsa club. The Tulsa club is the closest to my friend Deborah and she may join it. The title of the show was Tri-State Treasures (Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri), and the cases and exhibits reflected the theme. A featured exhibit was mineral and crystal specimens from the Tri-State Mineral Wing of the Joplin, Mo. Museum Complex. There was also a huge fluorescent room, a great silent auction, wonderful grab bags, and 23 dealers. There were hardly any dealers with beads but about 4 had meteorites and some were found locally. I got a wonderful shrimp fossil for $30 and a few other small things. So we had fun and met a lot of really nice people and got a few treasurers. Community Center Case I need someone to put in a fabulous case THIS WEEK in the community center. I just put in the big case in the library for the month of May and need somnething special to advertise our show. The display would be in there for 1 1/2 months and should be showy. If you can do this-let me know-thanks. Nancy Bird Mr. Green - Did you see the booth from North Orange County Gem Club. They gave me a piece of Whale Bone. Miss Orange - Yea! Me too, a very nice piece of Whale bone. They are going to have an All-American Gem Show with Gems, Jewelry, rocks and lots of activities for us kids. Professor Yellow - I got a piece of Dinosaur Bone to add to my collection. - They said that the show is going to be at my school -- the Southern California of Health Sciences, E, Amber Valley Rd. in Whittier. Mr. Green - I am going on Sunday (Fathers Day) - That way, I can get in free if I bring my little green leaf and wife green tree. Miss Orange - I am after the great Jewelry at the show and the great prizes they are going to raffle off. Professor Yellow - I am going to enjoy the Petrified forest displayed by Walt Wright. He has one of the largest petrified wood collections in the world and going to display over 130 specimens. He is a master at identifying petrified wood. NOC NEWS - May

7 Memorial Day Weekend Field Trip by Joe Goetz One of our most popular weekend field trips is to the beautiful Owens Valley. This trip will take advantage of Memorial Day Holiday weekend from May As your field trip leader, I promise a fun field trip for the individual or family - including a return to the great crystal-collecting site at Crystal Ridge. We will also collect ammonite fossil casts in Union Wash. Paul Wendling has volunteered to demonstrate how to separate the fossils from the matrix. The field trip team and I are fielding the options of a visit The Haystack and collect epidote and beryl specimens, collecting apache tears, exploring the Tungsten Hills where good garnet specimens may be collected. One tantalizing possibility is to a little-known petrified wood collecting site. There are many collecting places to choose and it should be a great trip. Travel+Lodging/Hotels+Lodging/Hotels+Motels for Big Pine motels, and for motels in Independence. Bishop is only 15 miles north and they have a lot of motels, subject to availability. The plan is for all of us to meet Saturday morning (May 29) at 8:30am at the entrance to the Glacier View Campground. Hope to see you there! Directions: Take I-15 or CA 14 north from the L.A. Basin to U.S. 395 north. Continue along this historic route until you get to Big Pine. Watch for the campground on your left as you pass Big Pine. The campsite is the Glacier View Campground, located one-half mile north of Big Pine, CA on Highway 395. The campground includes showers, 39 campsites - 9 with water and electrical hook-ups are available. Camping spaces are available for tents and larger RV s. No dump station available. Rates for dry camping is $12.00 per night and $17 per night for a space with hook-ups. They do not accept reservations, so folks are advised to arrive as early as possible - even consider coming in on Thursday night. If you are inclined to motel camp you had better make a reservation ASAP. This weekend is Bishop Mule Days and motels fill up quickly. As the Bishop motels fill, the overflow will stay in Big Pine or even Independence. As of April 25th there were a few available at the Starlight, Big Pine and Bristlecone Manor Motels in Big Pine and at Ray s Den Motel 26 miles south in Independence ($85 inc tax and breakfast).
