Greater Cincinnati BMW Club GCBMWC Carpe Viam Seize the Road GCBMWC e-letter neiljones@aol.com We re on the Web July 1, 2008 In this Issue: July meeting details page 4 Rally listings on page 5 Merrill Glos meets his Hero - pages 9-11 Membership List - page 8 RA in da UP pictures pages Eighth Issue by New Editor! Joe DeLuca and I rode to MI to the UP for the RA. Chris Long sent an important while on his way north, saying it was cold up there and there is a $38 rate for the Normandy Motel in St. Ignace. Both bits of information were helpful. My electric vest came in handy, as did a supply of warm clothes. About 12 members went to this rally. Most stopped to visit the Gay Bar. Steve Thoerner swears it was a Gay bar before he arrived. Look for pics elsewhere in this issue, including one of a club member caught with pants down. Neil the Editor GCBMWC 7/1/2008

Greater Cincinnati BMW Club 2008 Officers President. Bob Ulrich Vice President... John Fischer Treasurer... Tom Ritter Secretary... Neil Jones Web Master Mike LaBar New Members are always welcome! Bring cash or check to a meeting or mail a check to Tom Ritter, 9881 Voyager Way, Cincinnati, OH Single member $15. Couple $18. Club Breakfast & Ride Sunday, July 6 John Fischer, Vice President of Rides says: I just got back from Italy last night after two weeks in Tuscany areas. I hope everyone has a good & safe U.P. experience. I recommend 89 Octane [(R+M)/2 method] gasoline for most BMWs on trips. Since I will not be able to make the July 6 th due to a trip out west I would like to nominate Mr. Jones as the ride leader for the 6 th. Then it will be easier for the Secretary to obtain a ride report for the newsletter. Seriously Neil-thanks for the newsletters-they re good. Ride well. John F. Editor s note: We re looking for a volunteer to lead the ride Sunday, July 6. GCBMWC 7/1/2008

Stunning Lake Michigan shoreline reflected in Mike LaBar s face shield. While in Utah in May, I spent a full day touring Canyonlands NP near Moab. Touring this park is a worthwhile investment for any motorcycle traveler lucky enough to be in Utah. Early in the day while I was looking over a park information board, a motorcyclist came alongside on an 82 Yamaha. We ended up riding together through half of the park, swapping travel and life stories whenever we parked the bikes. In the background of this pic is a green man-made lake where they mine potash. Natural lakes are rare in Utah. Neil Jones

Next Club Meeting Saturday July 12! At the home of Gail Deatherage and Larry Lovejoy! 227 Carver s Trail, Warsaw, KY (Map available on club website) July meeting hosts Larry Lovejoy and Gail Deatherage, (seen here with Larry s aunt Phoebe, their constant chaperone, whose eyesight and hearing are thankfully finally diminishing at age 96.) Gail sez: Larry and I plan to have food for those venturing into the boonies of Gallatin County Kentucky -- here s the scoop: German Brats, metts, potato salad, plus the trimmings (including dessert) will be served on the waterfront at 6:00 pm prior to the meeting. First-come, first reserved on overnight sleeping - four bedrooms, two baths, (also living room floor to try out your new air mattress) plus shady camping w/ water and marina view for tents. Boat and jetski rides prior to and following the meeting.so come early and stay as long as you can. Larry sez:. You can take I-71 south to exit 57 (RT 35) and go west to Warsaw. Route 35 deadends into US 42, turn left on 42, 2 miles to Carver s Trail on the left. Or you can take I-71 south to exit 55, and take US 42 toward Warsaw east about 2 miles and Carver s Trail runs off to the right. My favorite way is down US 42 all the way to Carver s Trail. When you get lost, my cell number is (513) GPS Coordinates N W for the geek heads and technically savvy. GCBMWC 7/1/2008

July, 2008 July Black Hills BMW Stampede Spearfish, SD July BMW-MOA 2008 International Rally Gillette, WY July Top of the Rockies Rally Paonia, CO July Horizons Unlimited Travelers Meeting Robbinsville, NC Rallies & Events There is a trio of rally opportunities for July, starting with the Black Hills Stampede at Spearfish. See the marvelous Mt. Rushmore, tour the Crazy Horse Memorial Museum, ride up the canyon roads, not too far from the infamous Sturgis, SD, which actually is a pretty nice town. From Spearfish it is only 90 more miles to the MOA National at Gillette, WY starting July 17th. This will be the biggest gathering of BMW bikes this year. Expect 5000 or more bikes in attendance. Full selection of vendors, bike services, seminars on significant motorcycling issues, a few stunning babes walking around, great entertainment and prizes. Aw, you might as well hang out another week. You were going to lose your job sooner or later anyway. It s only one more state past Wyoming. The town of Paonia is one of the most scenic places in the Rocky Mountains. Top of the Rockies Rally is July 24 To 27. This is a highly regarded rally which attracts top notch vendors. Pick one, two or all three and have a great adventure out west. Stay east and get your eyes and mind opened up at the Horizons Unlimited meeting at the Iron Horse Motorcycle Campground in Robbinsville. WARN- ING: when you meet world travelers, you risk becoming one. GCBMWC 7/1/2008

Members present: Debbie Smith, Henry & Mary Pierce, Bob Ulrich, Tom & Cheryl Ritter, Bill & Shelia Wright, Joe & Chris Berry, Merrill & Diane Glos, Mike LaBar, Allen Leach, Bill Berry, Steve Thornier, Pete Wilton, Jim & Deana Smith, Neil Jones. No Guests. Next meeting will be held on July 12 at the home of Gail Deatherage and Larry Lovejoy in Warsaw, KY. Neil Jones read the minutes from the prior meeting. Minutes were accepted as presented. Treasurer Tom Ritter reported that the previous balance in the club account was $2,154 and that the club had income of $37 ($18 from dues and $19 from split the pot) making the new balance $2,191. The club has 37 paid members for The Treasurer s report was accepted as presented. Old Business Bob Ulrich announced that volunteers are needed at the RA rally in Michigan. Nobody volunteered. New Business Bob Ulrich expressed concern regarding planning for and selecting a location for the December 6 meeting & Holiday Party. Last year s event attracted people, costs exceeded the amounts charged to members and there were mixed feelings about using Destiny s again this year. Tom Ritter offered to check on a golf club facility near his home. Jim Smith will check out a place on Cin-Day Road. Debbie Smith suggested checking at the Brew House on Rt. 128, and Pete Wilton volunteered to check it out. Animated banter followed. Neil Jones gave a report of his Western motorcycle adventure. GCBMWC 7/1/2008

(Minutes of GCBMWC meeting continuation) Club President Bob Ulrich presented an award to Henry & Mary Pierce for their having ridden their motorcycle in each of the contiguous 48 states. Bill Wright had prepared and framed an impressive certificate for this presentation. Henry & Mary then kept the group in rapt attention with stories of their journeys, unemployment offices, motorcycle travel, breakdowns and repairs. Neil Jones asked about the September club meeting which is scheduled to be held at or near the Moto GP in Speedway, Indiana. Several members are planning to be at this event. Our options are to 1.) Hold a meeting at or near the speedway, 2.) Meet elsewhere, and 3.) No meeting in September. Plans will be discussed at future meetings. Bill Berry made a motion to adjourn, which was passed by voice vote. Meeting adjourned at 8:36 PM (After adjournment, members enjoyed homemade sloppy joes, a variety of dessert pies, cookies and brownies. The drawing was held wherein Neil Jones won $19. Lucky stiff.) 9 Who is Hubert? By Hubert I was born and raised in Paris where I lived for 37 years. In 1983 I moved to Los Angeles. 5 years later, I moved to New York city until February 16, 2005 at 6:04 am when I started my Ten Years on the Road! I have been married 3 times and have 3 great daughters that I raised in sidecar and one grandson; they live in Paris, Milan, Italie and on the island of Jersey, UK. I was a real estate broker for 10 years, ran a night club for 7 years, was a sidecar- ist messenger for 3 years and owned a graphic arts business for 12 years. I have been traveling on 2 and 3 wheels motorcycle/ sidecar around the world since This is the most important part of my life after my family. Hubert (say U-bear) Who is Hubert? By Neil Jones Hubert is a Frenchman, a funny looking guy who is often seen wearing round, red glasses. He is a rare individual who delights in adventure, who has a magnificent curiosity about our world, and is a genius about keeping a web site up to date with photos and stories. His bike is a BMW GS airhead with sidecar. If you have even a tiny interest in motorcycle adventure, you must look into his web site: This site is organized into a series of what I ll call photo books. The neatest part is the ease of use. You merely click anywhere on any photo and it brings up the next photo. Hubert has a knack of capturing the most amazing shots on his camera. You wonder how he does it. Merrill Glos, our resident adventure rider, follows Hubert s travels more diligently than I do. Merrill saw that Hubert planned to be in Kentucky in May. Merrill went, met Hubert and soon they became friends. Hubert came to Merrill & Diane s home, rode the big green lawn machine and included photos and stories of Merrill & Di on his web site.

by M.D.Glos Hubert got my attention three years ago when I found his web site: thetimelessride.com while he was on his way north of the Arctic Circle, on the ice roads, in the winter!!! Minus -40 degrees with nothing but clear ice under your tires makes what is a challenge under the best summer conditions, a real challenge. Since then, I ve been following his adventures and mis-adventures south, thru Central and South America and back during the last two years. When I found out he was attending the European Rally in Kentucky on his way to having the frame on his R100GSPD straightened I knew I had to go to this rally to meet him. It was posted all around the campground: Free Movie, World s Fastest Indian, AG Bldg. 7pm. Hubert looked at his watch and it was 7:20. He asked if I had seen the movie and I had, so he suggested that since we really wouldn t miss much, we go see it. We entered the AG building, the movie was playing but still on the extra features section of the DVD. There were only five other viewers and the lights were fading the screen. No one seemed to be tending the laptop, so at 7:40 pm I suggested to Hubert (pronounced U-Bear) that he click on play movie while I went to find the switch and kill the lights. At five minutes till 8:00, a crowd started to file in, most muttering, damn, the movie s already started. It was then that we first realized we had crossed over into the Central Time Zone. Meeting one s hero is a risky proposition. Was this Frenchman the same as he portrayed on his website? I can tell you that after sharing two days with him, that Hubert is the real deal. He s a man who likes to take risks while respecting the many cultures that he visits. I am proud to say that in his last blog, ( ) he called me a friend for life. Rally attendance was 266. Oldest rider was 85. I didn t win anything. merrill

Recent from Hubert Kriegel: Hello my friends, I am not sending too many s, but I always keep my web site updated! For the last 2 years, I was in Central and South America where I visited almost all the countries. My most memorable moments were - Crossing the Panama Canal with my sidecar on a tug boat - Riding Patagonia on Ruta 40 in Argentina - Footing Antarctica - Riding all the passes in the Andes between Chili and Argentina (15000ft.) - Sleeping in the middle of the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia - Penetrating by mules the Inca's territory in Peru I am back in New York and have been very touched by the true story movie "Into the Wild" (yes, I understand this guy completely). I am preparing my next ride to Siberia and Mongolia where I would like to be next winter! Hubert visits Blue Ash, trades a seat on his BMW GSPD for a seat on Merrill s Big Green Deere

Stunning R1100S $8, model, ABS, 13,700 miles. Over $2,000 in options including BMW saddlebags (used once) and a Remus sound system. Recent BMW service. Very, very nice motorcycle! (Will more pics upon request). Seller : Sabine Grand Call (937) sakesaba@yahoo.com
