I have a row of mice that I knitted ages ago that live on top of the fridge, just back from the edge of the freezer door. I whipped the freezer door open to find something for tea and a grey mouse flew past me. For a mad moment, I thought a real mouse had leapt out of the freezer - then sanity returned. Do wish some newsreaders would realise that the letter a is not always pronounced ar. Heard one the other night read out that the Marllee had received some rain. Another fellow pronounced Kakadu as Karkardu. Private school graduates? Recipe hint in the brochure from WW this week - Try something new with your pork cutlets - potatoes! Who would have thought, Jamie? Thank you to the Marsdens for their explanation of the urns. I had noticed them before and wondered. Your restoration of the shop is great. I ve been interested for many years in the parts of old buildings that are above the verandahs. They are usually quite lovely, but can only be seen properly from across the street. This can cause problems if you wander along staring across the street and not watching where you are going (Country Bumpkin)! Maryborough has some nice building tops, and of course Ballarat s are magnificent. Nearly got hit by a smoke detector last week. Heard a plasticy sort of noise as I walked up the passage. Mr ramble called out, That was close. We went back and there was the detector on the floor - it had just missed me.! I put it back up and it still works (as I found out when I did something silly with the toaster). 3 23 September 2015 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 30 Issue 36 Page 3 LETTERS TO THE VOTERS OF MARYBOROUGH Ex-councillor Ian Robertson was in court again last week; guilty of another count of conflict of interest whilst a Central Goldfields councillor. He had voted that the shire pay $70,000 to cover his own legal expenses. That works out at about $140 per ratepayer. Previously I wrote that this was done at a secret meeting. It transpired in court that it was at a workshop. This was a workshop attended by Cr Ian Robertson and some of the long term Maryborough councillors that approved payments not included in council meetings. It was also noted in court of the use of acronyms that made items difficult to identify. It was not discussed in court if the intention was to hide these items from other councillors, the residents, the Local Government Inspectorate, or all of the above. The real story here is the current Maryborough councillors part in this and the attempt to cover it up. I asked the councillors if they intended paying for Ian Robertson s current legal expenses. No response. John Tully, Carisbrook TILLY ASTON ROSES On Tuesday 15 September Tilly Aston Roses were planted out at the memorial site in Carisbrook. These roses are a gift form Rotary Maryborough, and were grafted by specialty rose grower Stan Niewesteeg, who is the brother of the originator of the Tilly Aston Rose. The roses took two years to effectively grow from graft, so we had been waiting patiently for some time. Rotary President Thea Allan, and Carisbrook Historical Society President Judith Healey took part in this special occasion. Councillor Helen Broad attended to endorse our endeavour. In her book Memoirs, Tilly Aston recollected a story about roses: Lady Carmichael gave me a smiling, kindly promise to perform the official opening of our Home, and in addition sent me away pleased and gratified with a gift of beautiful roses. In after years I heard something more about those roses. A blind friend of mine told me the story. Her sister had been a maid at Government House at the time, and had been present when the gardener brought in the bouquet to be taken up to her Ladyship. Of course, the girls went into raptures over the flowers, as I did later, but the gardener was doleful, indeed he was just a little resentful about it all. "Yes," he said, "they are fine blooms, some of my best; but isn't it a shame! They are for a blind lady, and she won't be able to appreciate them. Just wasted!" - Tilly Aston ( ) Sue Tully EXPLORE TRUE CRIME WITH AUTHOR GIDEON HAIGH Murder mystery enthusiasts are in for a real treat when renowned Melbourne journalist and writer Gideon Haigh speaks about his new true crime book, Certain Admissions: a Beach, a Body and a Lifetime of Secrets, at Bendigo Library. Based on real events, the intriguing plot centres around the story of 24 year old Melbourne radio announcer John Bryan Kerr, who was charged with the murder of 20 year old Beth Williams in A long time cricket devotee, sportswriter, journalist and author, Gideon has penned over 30 books, the majority of them about cricket. Bendigo Library Adult Programs Coordinator, Sue Mooney, says that Gideon is also a long established journalist, having worked with many major newspapers, magazines and websites. Gideon Haigh is a real coup for Bendigo Library, says Ms Mooney. We are delighted to give the community the opportunity to connect with such a well-known literary identity. Gideon s book will be on sale at the event and signings will be available afterwards. The session is free, and will run on Wednesday 30 September from 6.00pm-7.00pm at Bendigo Library. Bookings are required and can be made by telephoning or by visiting the Goldfields Libraries website DUNLUCE FARMER HAS STATE S BEST VETCH It s official, Mark Mortlock has the best looking vetch crop in the state. Can be found growing in coastal areas, dry inland woodlands, grassy open forests, and mountain regions in NSW, Vic, SA and Tas. Mostly as an understory plant, growing in well draining sand stone, shale, or clay soils. This is a dense, very low growing woody shrub only reaching about 50cm in height and one metre wide. Its leaves are small, blue-green in colour, narrow and prickly around the edges. The flowers are red and tubular around two cm long followed by small grape size green fruits, turning reddish when ripe. Although there is only a small amount of pulp around a rather large seed, it is quite sweet and tastes a bit like apple. Most of the native heath plants bear edible fruit; however, the cranberry heath is the best of them. The fruits were eaten by aboriginal people, and the sweet nectar was sucked from the flowers. They like full sun to semi-shade and are drought and frost hardy once established. They also attract nectar-eating birds to your garden. Even though the fruits can be made into jams, I think I ll just be eating them fresh, and having fond childhood memories of a beautiful honeysuckle my mum had growing on the side fence of our family home, I may even show the grandkids how to suck the nectar from the little flowers. Participants are encouraged to bring cuttings (and tubes or pots to put them in) of any plants they would like to propagate. This event will be held at the Talbot Community Centre, Cnr of Scandinavian Crescent and Fyfe St, Talbot. Our resident historian John Tully showcased the works of his great, great grandfather, Charles Nettleton, who was a photographer during Mr Nettleton was the creator of many historic photographs of the era; his most well-known probably being the one taken of Ned Kelly the day before he was hanged. The exhibition drew a crowd of almost 100 people on Saturday and 45 on Sunday. You still have a chance to view these rare photos next weekend - 26 and 27 September. Despite the inconvenience as the machinery moved along Broadway the workers were cheerful, courteous and helpful, making sure the entrances to shops were useable. Now we can park with ease and walk and cross Broadway using our crossing. Lets all get back into good habits as we use the shops. Congratulations to everyone for your patience adhering to the speed limit and watching out for pedestrians. IS THAT DOOR LOCKED? Some residents in Dunolly have reported to police that they think their locked car door may have been opened over night and items disturbed within the car. These vehicles are usually parked in the driveway and sometimes behind gates that were shut: this is disturbing. It is one of those things, locking the car door, that we might do on automatic while the brain is busy with other thoughts, so it is worthwhile stopping a moment to register locking the car door so we can be sure. Some of these car models are older ones so using a steering lock and not leaving valuables in the car when parked is a good practice, to deter would be thieves. Reporting any act of illegal behaviour is important as it gives Police a pattern of behaviour when solving crimes. Members are reminded that they need to be at the hall on Saturday, 10 October by 9.30am to prepare for the Saints and Sinners Bike Ride. Further, our general meeting has been moved to Monday 28 October and will take place after the AGM. Hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner. As usual, our Christmas Concert will be held on the first Friday in December, i.e. 4 December. In line with the festive season, our shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child are packed and ready to go. A special thanks to Jenny Lovel for filling the boxes with the goodies donated by members and for wrapping the boxes in Christmas paper. I m sure there will be a lot of excited and happy children when they open their parcels. Earlier this month it was Bealiba s turn to organise the Craft Day for the East Wimmera Group. There were three crafts on offer: card making, a scarf knitted with one s hands and arms or an owl chatelaine. It was a great day and people seemed very pleased with what they were they were taking home. A big thanks to our Craft Leader, Pam Brightwell, for organising everything days like this are a lot of work. At our general meeting, Pam reported that 16 knee rugs had been delivered to the Salvation Army, and 15 baby blankets and an assortment of babywear had been sent to the Frankston Hospital. If anyone is aware of a local organisation who could use any of these items, we d be pleased to hear from them. International Officer, Maureen Wright, continues to keep us updated on Cameroon. This week we learnt how cronyism, corruption, secessionist movements and the lack of infrastructure are holding development back. The International Monetary Fund is pressing the government to introduce reforms but I suspect they ll be a long time in coming. Our competition for September was a recycled item and there were some interesting objects on offer. Yvonne Best s dolls pram made from a wooden planter box and half a flower pot (beautiful covered in black satin) was a worthy winner. I liked the sheep s head made from corrugated iron and mounted on a wooden stake. Lyn said her husband, Ricky, had warned her not to come home with orders. Shame! I wanted one. There was also an 80 year old scoop brought by Joyce (who else) made from a small, disused can. It was beautifully made and very functional and I thought how inventive people were in the past. And they certainly never threw anything out that could be re-used. 14 Page 14 Volume 30 Issue 36 THE WELCOME RECORD 23 September 2015 DUNOLLY RURAL TRANSACTION CENTRE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2015 Report from President, Committee of Management I am pleased to present a brief report of the activities of the Dunolly RTC for Perhaps the most significant development this year has been the arrival of the new community bus at the end of January, complete with the wheelchair hoist. The CFA has fitted a towbar so they can pull a trailer and the RTC is funding a bullbar. However, the new bus has not been without its own problems. First, the access door includes two substantial steps that are difficult for many people to negotiate. The RTC has researched and consulted widely to find a suitable and safe step for passengers, without success. However, the engineering and fabrication expertise of two local men suggests a purpose-built step that conforms to Australian standards can be built. We look forward to the step being built and installed for the convenience of all passengers. Second, many drivers struggle to fill the bus fuel tank efficiently. The company that installed the wheelchair lift has agreed to rectify the problem that was caused when they moved the fuel inlet point. Third, we are still waiting for the agreed signage to be completed by the Maldon Community Bank. However, that will be completed very soon and the new bus will finally be clearly badged as the Dunolly Community Bus. Special thanks are due to Rosa Halas for following up on these matters so diligently. All jobs will be completed in October. In addition, plans are underway to construct a secure busport behind the RTC before the end of the year. This will simplify access for volunteer drivers, enable easy inspection of the bus after it is used and will free up valuable space at the CFA shed for their own use. The RTC appreciates the CFA s generosity over many years to house the community bus. The RTC volunteers continue to provide the myriad of services we offer with good humour and efficiency. Considerable patience is required for most transactions with Centrelink and VLine and all staff and volunteers do a great job. Assisting people to use computers, offering information and brochures to visitors, providing a photocopying service DUNOLLY QUALITY MEATS and handling Town Hall bookings are just some of their tasks. The RTC has introduced a welcome kit for new residents to assist people moving into our community. The kit incorporates material provided by the shire, plus information about local groups and trades people. The RTC also provides occasional financial assistance to the Dunolly Primary School and Pre School through the Education Fund. This fund enables students to access resources and experiences that may not otherwise be available and is financed from community bus hire fees. Our current volunteers are Margaret Noble, Robert Brown, Marrie Veness, Jennifer Cook, Mark Mackley and Irene Meagar, all of whom do a great job. The committee also thanks several volunteers who have retired this year; Graeme, Monika and Steve, who all contributed their time over several years. Our volunteer bus drivers, Bill, Steve, Len and Shiralee, provide another essential community service that is greatly appreciated. Rosa continues to provide secure co-ordination of all aspects of the RTC s responsibilities and the committee appreciates her efficiency and initiative. Robert Brown is a very steady hand as treasurer, so the committee is confident that the RTC finances are well managed. Margaret Noble continues to be an exemplary committee secretary. The Committee has expanded during the last twelve months and we have welcomed Georgie Hall, Pam Brodie and Helen Jesser as new members. Georgie s background as RTC Coordinator is very helpful and Helen and Pam bring great experience to their new roles. Our major change this year has been Donna Mason s retirement from the Maldon Community Bank after 12 years managing the Dunolly desk. Donna was very much part of the RTC team and was liked and respected by so many in the Dunolly and district community. It s been a wrench for us all at the RTC, but it is certainly time for Donna to enjoy time away from work. However, we are also delighted to welcome Mel Rose as our new Maldon Community Bank staff member at the RTC. 15 23 September 2015 THE WELCOME RECORD Volume 30 Issue 36 Page 15 VICKY S VIEW NEW BUSINESS IN TARNAGULLA A very pleasant Saturday afternoon saw a large crowd gather in Jeff and Congo's newly cleared garden in Tarnagulla. After nibbles, drinks and a social chat it was time for the business part of the afternoon. Frances told the assembled crowd she first met Jeff and Congo nineteen years and nineteen days ago at almost that exact spot. She added that since then they have run businesses in Tarnagulla, Inglewood, Bruthen and Dunolly and it was great to see them back in Tarnagulla again. Frances then cut the ribbon to officially open Jeff and Congo's new business premises in Commercial Road Tarnagulla. A much smaller, cosier place than their big corner store in Dunolly, the new place still has DVDs and collectables. There were probably nearly one hundred people milling around to look inside, but despite the crowd nothing got broken and nobody missed getting inside. With this new collectables shop, Frances' vintage store, Birch and Wells gift ware, the Post Office, the pub and the community café, Tarnagulla will be looking a much busier place, especially on a Sunday. It was also very obvious that Jeff and Congo felt like they had come home. Things are sure to go well for them in Tarnagulla. 20 Page 20 Volume 30 Issue 36 THE WELCOME RECORD 23 September 2015 TRANSITION TO FULL NDIS ROLL OUT IN WANNON The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is set to start rolling out across Wannon from 1 January 2017, following an agreement for the full roll out by the Commonwealth and Victorian Governments. Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan, said the agreement for the transition to the full NDIS in Victoria was a huge milestone for the scheme. Thanks to this agreement, 105,000 people across Victoria will get the individual support they need, Mr Tehan said. Wannon will transition into the full scheme from 1 January This is great news for people with disability and their families across Wannon, and underscores our commitment to deliver the NDIS in full. This agreement delivers on the Heads of Agreement signed by the Commonwealth and Victorian Governments to implement the full scheme across Victoria by July It is a carefully managed roll-out designed to deliver an NDIS that stands the test of time. Ultimately around 460,000 Australians and their families will benefit from the NDIS across Australia, and with the agreements in the two largest states signed today more than half of eligible people in Australia will now be covered. The Coalition has already delivered, with its State and Territory partners, seven NDIS trial sites that now support close to 18,000 people. Negotiations are progressing well with the remaining states and the Northern Territory on the bilateral agreements for full NDIS rollout beyond the trial sites. DAN TEHAN REPORT NEW WEBSITE TO DRIVE HIGH EDUCATION QUALITY AND STUDENT CHOICE Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan, today welcomed the launch of the Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching or QILT website by Minister for Education, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP. Mr Tehan said QILT offers local school students access to independent information on the performance of higher education institutions, bringing together survey data from students at all Australian universities about their experiences and graduate job outcomes. The easy to use website allows students in Wannon and around Australia to compare institutions and study areas based on feedback from current and former students. This is a great new online tool that will help local students and their families make informed choices about their higher education options. I am pleased local Wannon students are now able to find out more about study options that are right for them, Mr Tehan said. I encourage all local students to use the QILT website to inform their future study options. The Australian Government is committed to encouraging a world-class education system that gets students the best results and giving them information and choice is a big part of this. You can visit the website at: Dan Tehan Media Release

24 Page 24 Volume 30 Issue 36 THE WELCOME RECORD 23 September 2015 A quiet Sunday drive on a warm Spring day in September. What could be nicer? The crops are looking great, even though we ve not had a lot of rain, and we ve also not had the early heat to dry them out. But it s all a bit hit and miss isn t it? Our destination is Inglewood to see the Kooyoora Wildflower Show and photographic exhibition, held this year in the EUCY museum. As we wandered through the big shed, it never ceases to amaze me, just how many of our native shrubs are flowering this early in Spring. All of these tastefully arranged in little stubby beer bottles. Someone had planted and nurtured pots of very cute little Bird orchids, as well as some Greenhoods and got them to flower in time for this weekend. I have always loved the Australian bush, especially our own Box Iron Bark forests with all of its array of flowering shrubs and native wildflowers and, indeed, even a lot of our weeds are pretty. Our many flowering ground Orchids are stunningly beautiful. Why don t you take a friend or friends out into the bush on or about the second week in October and see for yourselves. You ll be amazed! You won t have to travel far, and remember, there are many more flowers on the side of hills, rather than the flat ground. In the big shed there are flower and butterfly posters available, and also quite a variety of books on local flora and fauna. Vicky and I gravitate towards the native plants for sale. These are from the Native nursery at Newstead. Of course we buy a few for our gardens. Next we visit the photographic exhibition in the side room of the shed. Words fail me and I can only say WOW! The subjects all allude to nature and are of the highest standard. It s good to see the under 12 s and under 18 s are also getting out and about to improve their photography. We continue to wander and find a small display of mammals, birds and reptiles, perched on various stands. But I can t admit to being an admirer of taxidermy. I d just heard on Macka earlier that morning, that here in OZ we have more feral cats than people and that the wildlife is disappearing so fast, that it can t keep up. So please enclose those moggies, or everything will end up STUFFED. Out of the shed, we wander over to see the old EUCY distillery, pausing to watch young kids climbing on an artificial rock wall set up nearby. All safely harnessed of course and appearing totally unafraid. The old EUCY building has a dilapidated air, but it has had for as long as I can remember. It must have been akin to hell, working near all of that heat and steam. Probably good for the sinuses tough. The ancient blue truck is still parked where it was years ago. The whole park is well set up for the weekend such as this. And yes the car did start. Maz
