Volume 2018 Issue 12 December December Dinner Menu Hot Dogs, Mac & Cheese, Chips, dessert & drink Special price $5.00 December will be worth $270 because Donald Dinninger wasn t in attendance at the November meeting. Congratulations to Jacob Lounsbury he won Ruger American 6.5 Creedmore Rifle December s Gun Raffle will be a Ruger American 9mm December Meeting Some may say it s beginning to look a lot like Christmas while others may argue it looks more like a winter wonderland as we let it snow, let it snow. Nonetheless, I wouldn t want you to have a blue Christmas so it s a good thing that Santa Claus is coming to town. Please join us Thursday, December 13 th as we are rockin around the Christmas tree. I ve decided not to hang mistletoe because I d hate it if I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus. That may certainly lead to someone s last Christmas and I d hate for that to happen as it s the most wonderful time of the year. So run Rudolph run because this is a party you won t want to miss but please be careful because I don t want grandma to get run over by a reindeer otherwise you won t get nothin for Christmas. While we wait for Santa thinking about all I want for Christmas and telling Christmas don t be late, we will be edutained by Jef Johnson, Senior Conservation Coordinator, Genesee Conservation District. Jef spoke to us in January about how he makes conservation fun and entertaining and gave us great ideas on how to engage youth in conservation. This time he is coming to demonstrate one of his programs with the help of Saginaw Field and Stream s young conservationists. It is promised to be high energy and very edutaining! Then before we adjourn for the evening to finish the twelve days of Christmas the big guy himself will show up to give each child a chance to speak with him. He will wish them a holly jolly Christmas on behalf of the club and provide a gift from the club. So don t be a Grinch or Scrooge and please hop in your sleigh for a sleigh ride. Put on carol of the bells or the little drummer boy and prepare to have yourself a merry little Christmas with Saginaw Field and Stream. Club Shooting Hours Are as follows, 8:00 AM until sunset, use you hunting guide to determine sunset. If there is an organized event under lights, that may go to 10 PM. The lights on ranges are for organized events only. Guests Anyone who is not immediate family is considered a guest and is required to pay the $5.00 guest fee. Mail Boxes are located on each range. Immediate family is defined as, spouse, and minor children.

A Letter From The President As deer hunting winds down for the season, I hope that you and your family had tremendous success. I have seen some very nice harvests. CONGRATULATIONS! Now I would be remised if I did not put a plug in here for Jim reminding those of you still hunting to get your deer checked for CWD. It s hard to believe but 2019 is staring us down in its crosshair! As we wrap up things for the year there are several housekeeping items that need to be addressed. Memberships expire DECEMBER 31 st, That means that if your membership has not been renewed by 12/31/18 aka DECEMBER 31 st, 2018 aka as the 365 th days this year you will be assessed a late payment fee. If you have a personal problem that will prevent you from renewing by the deadline but intend on maintaining your membership, please contact either the Membership Secretary Mike Keeler or me PRIOR to the December 31 st deadline. After the deadline, we will not be able to work with you to determine the best solution to avoid the additional fee. Please submit your nominations for any club and /or board member you would like recognized by December 31 st. That will allow the nominations committee ample time to review the nominees and prepare their respective recognition, which will be presented during our February 2019 business meeting. At a minimum, nominations should state why you believe your nominee should be recognized and provide an example(s) of support. Lastly, should you have any projects or ideas you would like tackled next year please submit them by December 31 st. Thank you very much for the support you have given the club and me this year! I hope that 2019 brings us even more success and improvement. On behalf of Saginaw Field and Stream, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Please note, during January s membership meeting we will vote on whether or not to take out a loan to support the Future Project Committee s plan. Regards, David Anderson, President
Celebrating Christmas Our Christmas tree is up and I just love sitting in the evening enjoying the lights. The other night I found myself drifting into my habit of pondering. This time I got to thinking of the people of the Old West and how they celebrated their Christmas. It was much the same as we do now, only on a lot smaller scale. It was a quiet, simple time. Many lived miles from town and they didn t have much time or money to bring in many fancy goods. Christmas trees were small, set upon a table. Even the humble tumbleweed was used when nothing else was to be found. (Definitely a Charlie Brown tree.) The Christmas dinner table would be laid out with homemade bread and jam made in the summer and saved just for this occasion. Wild game, if available, was served along with whatever vegetables they had. They didn t have many gifts and most were practical, like warm stockings, a hat, mittens, or a scarf. Toys were also handmade. That was the way it was back in the 1800 s. Not a lot, but enough. They treasured the day and the people they were with. And that still holds true today. The Saginaw Cowboys wish each of you a most blessed Christmas. We hope Santa leaves you some cowboy guns so you can come and shoot with us next year. And remember to live life give it your best shot, now, and in the coming New Year! Katie Callahan By Mike Meyer The trap and skeet fields have been pretty quiet lately with all the various hunting seasons, especially deer hunting that have been taking place. Now would be a good time to come out and shoot some clay pigeons if you want to avoid the crowds. Or just come out and shoot the crap. We ll have a fire in the fireplace, hot coffee and maybe some cookies if we can talk some spouses into doing some extra baking. Speaking of spouses, if any of you are trying to think of something to get your significant other sportsperson for Christmas, we have everything for the shotgun shell reloader primers, powder, wads and shot. Or, we have loaded shells and shoot cards. Memberships, renewals and associate memberships also make good Christmas gifts. NEW PROMOTION - Anyone that shoots a straight in a paid-for round of skeet or trap in December will be awarded a free round. So come out and give it a try. Our Traveling Winter Trap League will be starting January 6th at the Shiawassee Club. Every other Sunday we will meet at Shiawassee, Brant or Saginaw Field and Stream to shoot 2 rounds of Trap. Call or stop out at the Club grounds for details. We will remain open thru-out the winter for trap and skeet shooting on Tuesdays and Saturdays. On behalf of the Saginaw Field & Stream Club Trap and Skeet committee, have a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!! 5 November, 2018 For legislative issues go to Lansing Watch on our web page: saginawfieldandstream.com The status of an endangered butterfly was reviewed. The Poweshiek Skipperling can be found in Oakland County at the Brant road fen in the Holly State Recreation Area. Cisco (herring) stocking is picking up. There are plans underway for long-term restoration. The perch bag limit is expected to go to 25 state-wide with no plan on the size limit. The Lake Trout bag limit is being reduced from 3 to 2 in northern Lake Huron. The consent decree with the tribes limits the amount of Lake Trout that can be taken by sport anglers. The limit has been exceeded every year for the past few years. The over harvest of one year reduces the allowed harvest for the next year. There is definitely a conundrum here as the lake trout have fully recovered in northern Lake Huron and there is an abundance of fish available which, most likely, accounts for the over harvest by sport anglers. The tribes will not alter the limitation regardless of the abundance of fish. They are gearing up for the 2020 consent decree negotiations slated to start next year. Even with the known Lake Trout abundance in northern Lake Huron, the feds are still stocking Lake Trout. I guess nobody told them to stop. If you are a Brook Trout angler and plan on going to the U.P. to fish, read the regulations very carefully. The bag limit will vary from stream segment to stream segment. Previously it was believed that a 10 fish bag limit would not hurt the population and would increase angler participation. So certain areas were opened to the 10 fish bag limit from five. Now it is believed that a 10 fish bag limit could hurt the population and could reduce angler activity. It is recommended that further evaluation might be beneficial. This discussion has been going on for quite some time. Since most anglers prefer the five fish bag limit I am a total loss as to why there has been any discussion at all. CWD in the U.P. Not a surprise. I hope those of you that have been successful this season have had your deer checked regardless of where you harvested it. It s best to know and be safe. I also hope you disposed of the waste in the recommended manner which helps to prevent the spread of the disease. Jim De Clerck
HELP WANTED! The indoor archery range will be closed Friday, December 28th from 9:00am to 6:00pm for cleaning. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Come on over & burn off some of that holiday cheer. Join us, you know it ll be fun! Archery News Welcome to indoor season everyone! We have officially started the indoor archery season with the first Saginaw Valley shoot taking place on November 24 and 25. There will be a Valley Shoot every weekend from now through March so you will have multiple opportunities to compete in them. To see where the shoot is every weekend look at the schedule on the SVAA Facebook page or we have the schedule on the bulletin board in the Indoor Archery building. We also are going to be starting up our indoor leagues in January. We will be hosting a league almost every night of the week and during two of the mornings. We have animal leagues and spot leagues for you to shoot in. All the information will be posted on the Saginaw Field and Stream website, the SFS archery Facebook page, and on the bulletin board in the indoor archery building. There will be sign up pages to the leagues in the indoor archery building, so if you are interested in a league please sign up so we can get a prediction of how many people will be shooting this winter. On top of the leagues we will also be hosting 3 indoor 3D shoots this year: January 19 and 20 th, February th, and March th. We had really good turnouts to these shoots last year so I hope that we can continue that this year. More information will be coming out on these next month so stay tuned to the SFS Facebook page and next month s newsletter. Finally there are 3 opportunities to have youth involved with archery this winter. The first is our Saturday morning archery classes that will start on January 12. This is for any beginner archer to come and shoot. The class is free but concessions are available to purchase during the class. For more information on these classes or if you would like to help out with coaching go to Saginaw Field and Streams website or contact Mike Juengling at The second is through our JOAD program. This is for kids and teenagers who have shot before, are decent shots, and are looking to improve. This class is focused on improving form and advancing the skill of each archer. The classes take place on every Friday night starting on January 11. For more information look to the insert in this newsletter or the Saginaw Field and Stream Website. The third is through Thomas Township. They offer multiple classes for all experience levels through the township. The classes are held on Thursday s at the indoor archery building from 2-9 PM. All the information for this class is located at Thomas Township s Parks and Recreation Website. If you have any other questions on anything else related to archery contact me through my phone or the SFS Facebook page. Ever forward, Andrew Flegler
2019 ARCHERY PROGRAM The Saginaw Field and Stream Club Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) program is an advanced archery program of USA Archery that teaches archery to young adults and provides great opportunities for awarding achievement. It also helps archers to enjoy the sport recreationally and progress to the excitement of competition! JOAD offers both recurve and compound archers the opportunity to learn range safety and proper shooting technique in an environment that also fosters focus, increased self-confidence, and team building skills. Saginaw Field & Streams JOAD is open to any youth archer ages 11 to 20 that has previous archery skills. This is NOT a beginning archery program. The archer MUST be able to shoot at 18 meters (20 yds.) and consistently group arrows the size of a full paper plate. The archer must have their own equipment (bow, matching arrows, side quiver, wrist sling etc.); that fits properly. The bow must be tuned and ready to shoot 20yds before the first night of class. This program will run 12 to 15 weeks long and will be on Friday evenings from 7 pm sharp until roughly 10:00 pm starting January 12, I only have room for 48 archers so first come first serve. You must be preregistered and paid in full by December 15, The cost of the program will be $60.00 that will cover the pins, lanyards and targets. You do not have to be a member of Saginaw Field and Stream Club to participate. However, this class does participate in the USA Archery pins program so before the archer can receive his or her white pin (approx. 3 weeks in) they must join USA Archery at an extra cost of $40.00 (you may check out USArchery.org for more info). You will sign up for this on your own. You will need the All Access Youth USA Archery Membership. If you choose not to join USA Archery you may still shoot but will NOT receive any more pins. To sign up or for more information call Scott Schrank at (989) or me at swsarrow@yahoo.com I will then you a sign up packet that must be filled out with a check and returned to me by December 15, Remember I only have 48 spots so first come first serve.
