A Letter From The President On behalf of the board of directors and Saginaw Field and Stream, we pray that the good things in life may be yours in abundance, at Thanksgiving and every day. Happy Thanksgiving! If you missed October s membership meeting, you need to stop by the multi-purpose room at the clubhouse to see a scale 3D model of the board s plan to enhance our ranges. The plan addresses members desire for additional Flexibility, Improvements, Removal of windows, Environment, Access, Ranges with longer distances, Modernization, Safety and the board s obligation to ensure long-term preservation of the club. Based on the predominantly positive feedback received during the meeting, the board adopted the presented plan and we are taking the initial steps to implement the plan. Based on current estimates, we anticipate the completed project to be in the neighborhood of what the clubhouse cost. As I stated during the membership meeting, I did not join Field and Stream for the clubhouse so I welcome the commitment to our ranges. WE ARE NOT CONSIDERING A DUES INCREASE TO FUND THIS PROJECT. We are evaluating our financing options to determine what we can afford immediately and then we will establish a timeline for the subsequent phases. During the January membership meeting, we will be seeking consent to borrow up to $500,000 for the project. If you will be unable to attend the January meeting but you have questions or comments, please contact me at president@saginawfieldandstream.com. Can you identify what is wrong in this picture? GENERAL RANGE RULES (*available online*) 10. Prone shooting is not allowed on any range. If you recognize the shooter above in the pictures below, please contact me so I can ensure he understands our range rules. As a shooter, you must understand and obey all of our range rules. If you are uncertain about a rule, ASK. The range rules are easily accessible online ( Remember, safety is no accident!

By Mike Meyer We lost one of our long-time skeet and trap shooters last week. Bob Taylor passed away, leaving a large void in the camaraderie amongst the shooters. Bob enjoyed his Winchester Model 12 s and had several of them personally engraved by the man that Browning Arms employed for custom engraving. Bob will be missed by all of us that knew him and shot with him. A MPH wind sure makes trap and skeet shooting interesting. Depending on the direction of the wind, the trap targets can shoot up, or down, or do both -like a Frisbee. They can curve with the wind direction or go up and stop and wait for you to shoot them. On the skeet field, the same antics can happen. Plus, if you re shooting doubles, one target can go high and the other can be a worm burner. In addition, with a Westerly wind, the high house will go high and slow down, while the low house, with a tail wind, can go low and get by you before you re ready for it. It all adds to the fun and prepares you for some of the situations you encounter while bird hunting. Shooters that shot 25 straight or better from September 22 nd thru October 16 th : Trap Skeet 25 Straight 25 Straight Jack Armstrong Fred Senni Greg King Dave Pine

Safety First, Last, & Always As we wind down from our 2018 cowboy shooting season, along comes November, with one of my favorite times.thanksgiving. Of course, that got me pondering on just how blessed it was to have enjoyed so much fun shooting with our pards this year. Cowboy Action Shooting is a combination of historical reenactment and Saturday morning at the matinee that can only result in FUN. But, I also think a big part of being assured of that fun is the fact that we all try to put safety first in every practice, every match we do. SASS, the Single Action Shooting Society, which most cowboy shooters are members of, wants participants to be safe, have fun, and develop their shooting skills. They have always had the motto Safety first, last, and always and they reinforce it with strict rules. It just makes sense to follow those rules religiously; they keep us safe so we can enjoy shooting another day. And who isn t for that?!! In cowboy action shooting, we shoot two single action revolvers, a lever action rifle and a shotgun; each have their own specific rules. For example, a basic rule is we only load 5 rounds in our single action revolver, with our hammer down on the empty chamber. It s a great safety rule if the gun is ever dropped. We keep our finger off the trigger until ready to fire and we are aware of our target and beyond. We also do not walk around with ammo in our guns; we carry empty guns to the loading table, load and wait to be called to shoot. When finished, we go immediately to the unloading table and are observed by the unloading table official that all guns are empty. Our ammo also meets specific requirements: our targets are steel and only lead bullets can be used no jacketed, semi-jacketed, gas checked, or copper washed ammo is allowed. Lead splatters but the other mentioned ammo, when used on steel targets, can fragment and ricochet. Along with specific ammo, our pistols can never be cocked until they have cleared the holster at least a 45 degree angle. And in our game, no quick draw is allowed; cowboy action shooting is not a fastdraw event. Certain shooting style categories have additional mandated rules that shooters must follow to enhance fun while keeping safety in the forefront. The adrenaline is pretty high and these safety rules are meant for our own protection, as well as that of others. Saginaw Field & Stream is affiliated with SASS with a goal of helping to grow this fun sport in a manner consistent with all SASS rules and regulations. This affiliation ensures no matter where your travels take you, you know exactly what to expect in terms of safety and consistency in enjoying the sport. SASS has a Cowboy Action Shooting Shooter s Handbook that has 42 pages of rules and regulations that we adhere to. It is where beginners, as well as seasoned shooters, go for all cowboy action safety information. Their website is for you industrious readers who are also fond of shooting safely. Back to my pondering and blessings. The cowboys wish each of you pards a wonderful November. Good luck and safety to the hunters in their quest of putting that turkey or venison on the Thanksgiving table. And, of course, happy eating to those who get to enjoy the feasts that will be prepared. Give thanks for everything, big and small and don t forget to live life. Give it your best shot. Happy Trails from Katie Callahan

October, 2018 For legislative issues go to Lansing Watch on our web page: saginawfieldandstream.com On the fishing side, there have been very good reports of limit catches of Atlantic salmon. Very good takes of walleye and good size perch. There is an abundance of Lake Trout; however, there will be a reduced bag limit of 2 in northern Lake Huron. This is due to the 2000 agreement with the tribes as to the amount of Lake Trout that sport anglers can take. Even though the abundance is known, the tribe will not back off the agreed limits. Looks like they are getting ready for the 2020 negotiations. The First Nations in Canada have refused to allow the use of lampricide in two Canadian rivers. They claim there is damage to the environment. Lampricide has no impact on humans and breaks down and disappears quickly and there is no alternative. This could mean a large scale destruction of the fishery. If you plan on using any of the trails, you might run into washouts from the fall rains. It is reported that there are a number of such conditions and repairs may be slow in coming. A number of the parks have had similar problems, particularly in the U.P. Water quality sensors have been placed in the Clinton River and Lake St. Clare. This is a pilot program of 50 sensors. Eventually these units will be place in all the Great Lakes and tributaries. There is no evidence of Asian carp in the Great Lakes. There was a lot of discussion on the Brook Trout limits. The DNR has proposed expanding the bag limits on a number of stream segments. Those speaking at the meeting were opposed to the changes. The Michigan Director of the Humane Society of the United States spoke on the significant economic contribution of non-consumptive wildlife watching. The claim was around $60 billion. Didn t mention the billions contributed by the consumptive users which allows the watchers to enjoy themselves. I don t know about you but the only wildlife watchers I have seen are consumptive users and not just when they are consumpting. I d suggest a watchers license but then the hunters would have to pay twice and the non-hunters would become violators. Our C.O. s have enough to do without watching watchers. I will continue to warn about not eating venison unless the animal has been tested for CWD. Mad cow disease, a cousin of CWD, had raised its ugly head in England again. It was thought to not affect humans, until it did. Also, the DNR can use all the heads it can get so take your harvest to a check station. Jim De Clerck

The Archery Report The rut is upon us. The best time of year to be in the woods with a bow in hand. I hope you have been able to get and hunt more than I have. As great of a time a year as it, it is also a busy time of year. With that said this month s article is going to be very informational so read carefully. Last year we brought back the Indoor 3-D shoots. We had good enough attendance at these that we are planning on doing them again this year. We do not have the dates set yet but on those weekends the indoor range will have 30 targets set up for you to shoot at with a max distance of 35 yds. There will be breakfast and lunch available to buy on both days. We always had a fun time at these shoots last year so I hope you can come out and join in on the fun. We are having JOAD again this year as well. The sign up deadline is December 15, see the handout later on in the newsletter for more information if you are interested. We just had the Saginaw Valley Archers Association meeting on October 28. There are a couple of take-always I wanted to share with you. First, we are hosting a Valley Shoot January 5 and 6 this year. I am going to need volunteers to man the kitchen, run the line, and do registration. Last year we had the second highest turnout of any of the valley shoots. Let s try to beat it this year and put on an even better event. For the young shooters in or entering college, the Saginaw Valley Archers Association has 2-$500 scholarships available this year. To qualify you need to do is shoot 3 Valley shoots this year and fill out the forms they have online. This is a great opportunity for you to help you with college tuition. Finally the first Saginaw Valley Shoot is on Nov 24 and 25 at Capital Area Sportsmen. I will try to keep you up to date on when the shoots are coming up. The information will be available on the Saginaw Valley Archers Association Facebook Page and website. It would be great if we can get a group together to go out to the other clubs and shoots this winter. Some more good news. We are hosting the R100 again this coming year. I signed the contract last week for August 24 and 25. Mark your calendars! We had a good shoot this last year despite the weather but we were still on the edge of whether or not they were going to ask us to host this year. Luckily we made the cut. We need next year to be a really good shoot if we want the R100 to continue to come to Saginaw Field and Stream. So begin to get the word out about the shoot for this coming year. Finally for 2019 there is going to be a re-organization of how archery is run. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to make sure that everything is run smoothly. Due to the work load I have seen certain things slip through the cracks that I want to take care of. To more widely distribute the load I am looking to form some committees to improve how archery is run. I don t have the details figured out, but there will be a committee for winter leagues, indoor 3-D, outdoor 3-D, competition shoots, concessions, advertisement/social media, and range maintenance/improvement. This is your chance to have a say in what you think archery needs to do to grow at Field and Stream. If you are passionate about any of those areas contact me so I can get your information. With that I hope that your arrows are flying true this hunting season. Ever forward, Andrew Flegler

2019 ARCHERY PROGRAM The Saginaw Field and Stream Club Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) program is an advanced archery program of USA Archery that teaches archery to young adults and provides great opportunities for awarding achievement. It also helps archers to enjoy the sport recreationally and progress to the excitement of competition! JOAD offers both recurve and compound archers the opportunity to learn range safety and proper shooting technique in an environment that also fosters focus, increased self-confidence, and team building skills. Saginaw Field & Streams JOAD is open to any youth archer ages 11 to 20 that has previous archery skills. This is NOT a beginning archery program. The archer MUST be able to shoot at 18 meters (20 yds.) and consistently group arrows the size of a full paper plate. The archer must have their own equipment (bow, matching arrows, side quiver, wrist sling etc.); that fits properly. The bow must be tuned and ready to shoot 20yds before the first night of class. This program will run 12 to 15 weeks long and will be on Friday evenings from 7 pm sharp until roughly 10:00 pm starting January 12, I only have room for 48 archers so first come first serve. You must be preregistered and paid in full by December 15, The cost of the program will be $60.00 that will cover the pins, lanyards and targets. You do not have to be a member of Saginaw Field and Stream Club to participate. However, this class does participate in the USA Archery pins program so before the archer can receive his or her white pin (approx. 3 weeks in) they must join USA Archery at an extra cost of $40.00 (you may check out USArchery.org for more info). You will sign up for this on your own. You will need the All Access Youth USA Archery Membership. If you choose not to join USA Archery you may still shoot but will NOT receive any more pins. To sign up or for more information call Scott Schrank at (989) or me at swsarrow@yahoo.com I will then you a sign up packet that must be filled out with a check and returned to me by December 15, Remember I only have 48 spots so first come first serve.
