3 A letter from the President: Since we can t possibly get all members together at once at the membership meeting/ dinner I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Matt Shapley, and I am a lifelong resident of Saginaw County. At our Board of Directors Meeting in February, I was nominated to as your new Club President. During my time as a member and director at the club I ve met a lot of great people and have seen changes that we have undergone as a club. I want to keep those positive changes moving forward and implement some additional ones for the betterment of the club and our members. We are currently looking at ways to make membership registration and renewal easier and move to an electronic format. We are also looking to revamp our website to make it more user friendly and beneficial to our membership and the public as a whole. We want to continually make all of our ranges and facility safer as well as promote a safe and positive experience for those who use them. We have many different shooting and conservation groups that use our facility and it is my goal to enhance the experience of each and every one of them. I also want to express my appreciation for the assistance and support I have received from many of you through this transitional period. I have a very aggressive agenda planned out for the year so we can constantly improve our club for all who use it and bringing us current with the times to make us more efficient and effective in all that we do. I look forward to working with all of you and meeting those who I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting and keeping the Saginaw Field & Stream Club truly an amazing piece of Saginaw County for us all to enjoy. Matt Shapley President

5 The Women s Shooting Alliance For two months in a row, we got lucky with the weather. Another beautiful day for our recent meeting of the Women s Shooting Alliance allowed a good couple of hours on the range. February was even warmer! Love the sunshine. If you are thinking about purchasing a firearm, or getting proficient with the one you have, please think about joining us. Each month we have new women, many who have never picked up a firearm. We will work one on one down at the range to help you learn the ins and outs but to also learn to shoot. This past month s group was shooting a hole out of the bull seye. They did a great job for their first time plus got shoot a variety of guns in different calibers. We meet the third Sunday of the month at 2:00 in the club house. Because of Easter we will be meeting the week before Easter on the 9 th of April. We hope our weather winning streak continues and you ll consider joining us for an afternoon of good education and empowerment. You do not need to be a member, everyone is welcome and we look forward to seeing you on the 9 th. Fire On Club Property. March 8, 2017 during the wind storm that day a tree branch knocked down two 9,600 volt power lines near the archery building and started a fire. While at home I got a phone call that there was a fire at the club so I rushed over there. When I arrived the Thomas Township Fire Department was already there. I meet Jerry Rodriguez a member of the club who called 911 and stayed at the club to make sure the Fire and Police Departments could get access to the club property. The Board of Directors would like to thank Jerry Rodriguez and the Thomas Township Fire Department for there quick response, preventing the ground fire from reaching the Archery Building. 12 Spring, and Your Fancy Turns to Yes, spring is here and most of us have heard the line from Alfred Tennyson s poem about a young man s fancy turning to thoughts of love. Well, this got me pondering on love and how love stories come to be and I thought maybe I d share a love story with you. The year was 1998 and cowboy action shooting had just begun at Saginaw Field & Stream. Bad River Marty was one of the gang from the beginning and was having a good time out on the range, shootin up a storm. At that time, I just watched and thought I would never be able to shoot all those guns, let alone fall in love with cowboy shooting. But Bad River Marty was as silver-tongued as any cowboy could be and kept asking me the same old question..when? And in my mind, the answer was never, never, never! Well, never say never! A year passed and spring had come to town, with love drifting like gun smoke in the air. I m not certain exactly when it happened; maybe after the first hit on the target and the ring of lead caressing that steel plate. Love certainly can hit with the speed of a bullet. It will be 18 years this spring when I changed my name to Katie Callahan and said I do love this cowboy shooting!! Yee Haw! Maybe Alfred Tennyson wasn t as knowledgeable about love as his poem portrays. Had he been a cowboy at heart, he would have known that cowboy action shooting was the real love on that young man s heart and would have written about it instead. We ll be starting our 2017 Wednesday night practices on April 19 th at 5 p.m. Spring is already here so why not stop on down to the cowboy range and see where your fancy lies. Until then, remember to live life.give it your best shot! Happy Trails from Katie Callahan Around The Fields by Frank Doozan The month of march has been slow due to rain, snow and wind. The Field & Stream club is there regardless and in most cases, will give you the needed attention to shoot better to receive better scores. It is believed someone is using the skeet house to shoot off hours and leaving a mess for others to clean up. To those who are committing this act you will stop because we will find out who you are and you will face consequences for your actions. On a final note the skeet house is done with heat a few chairs and windows to see the entire field. If anyone has a refrigerator, outdoor carpet and maybe a couch and upholstered chairs please contact myself at One person attained a perfect score this month for trap and that is Bill Otter 2/28 25 straight, and one person for skeet and that is Don Selley 3/18 25 straight. Sincerely Frank Doozan

13 Notes from Your Range Safety Officers First, we would like to say thanks to our Club members for their general cooperation and inputs. We've made new friends and learned useful tips. Before heading off to the gun ranges, please, be sure that you have read and are familiar with the "Standard Operating Procedures" (SOP). And, also remember to take eye and ear protection. With the neighborhood, including the Great Lakes Industrial Park, growing closer to the Club's property lines, increasing concerns over the possibilities of bullets leaving our borders are in order. While the Club has had a training program through the NRA for RSO's for some time, you might be aware of the increased presence of volunteers on the ranges, who may be approaching shooters, regarding their membership statuses and shooting procedures. While we've seen a variety of "violations" of the rules, we are citing a few of the more common ones. On the rifle range in particular, but also on the pistol ranges, the most common errors are shooters who fail to stay away from their guns and ammo on the benches while others are down range checking targets. When the range is "clear," those that are not downrange need to make a conscious effort to stay significantly back from their guns and ammo, until everyone calls for the range to be going "hot." The windows on the rifle range benches are a common source of complaining by big guys or shooters with tall guns. But, until someone comes up with a better and economical solution to preventing bullets from going over the berm, shoot from the benches and through the windows. If that is not possible, seek out or arrange for the presence of an RSO, who can open the windows on the far right benches. Another problem on both of the upper ranges are targets being placed too low on the target stands, resulting in the bullets hitting the ground before the berms, and ricocheting, with some going over the berms. Each shooter needs to review and abide by the Cooper/NRA gun safety rules to help prevent such occurrences. We are somewhat amazed when shooters appear to be oblivious to where their bullets are ending their journeys. "Rapid fire" is another safety concern: if your bullets aren't safely hitting where you are intending to hit, you are shooting too fast. Particularly in the Fall, we see muzzle loaders putting all of their equipment on the shooting benches. If they could see themselves shooting in the dark, they would understand why it is important to put the powder and projectiles on the back benches (shelves) and the primers on the shooting benches. We could go on with less seen "violations," but instead urge shooters to review the SOP. And, think safety first. Remember, too, that when you see an RSO, he or she is there as a volunteer, and is concerned about yours and others safety, and about keeping Saginaw Field and Stream going for generations ahead. Submitted by: Jack Mosher and Carl Hubinger P.S. We need more RSO's, so if you can afford the time, please, volunteer

14 MARCH 9, 2017 NATURAL RESOURCES REPORT There was a lot of discussion at this month s NRC meeting on the bear regulations. Some said there were too many bears and others said there were too few all supported by the scientific view of the hunters. The regulation order supported the scientist s scientific view. Two major issues which have an effect on our members were discussed at the meeting: commercial fishing regulations and CWD. Over the past few years the DNR has been having secret meetings with the commercial fishermen. This was done in preparation for legislation to update regulations which date back to the 1920 s. There has been quite an uproar about the process used and the content of the new legislation. As you might expect, the sport fishing community is very upset. For my part it was the locking out of public input that set me off. Trust, integrity, credibility, and transparency seemed to have been ignored. I made comments at the meeting to those issues. The Director said the process used in this case would not be used in the future. That recognized the error and hopefully will hold in the future. The Senator who received the proposed legislation commented that there is no official legislation in the mill, but there is effort under way to work out an acceptable package. Many sports anglers are working on revisions to the original proposal. I believe the issue will be resolved with joint input from all interested parties. Kelly Straka, DVM, is the new wildlife health specialist for the DNR. She gave a presentation on CWD. I think we are all concerned about CWD but may not have much background. CWD is spread by close contact with an infected animal, urine, feces, or a carcass. The infected animal may be a carrier for some time. The only tests available are from dead animals so there is no way to identify a live carrier. As an example: Arkansas was considered CWD free until February 2016, when a hunter harvested an elk which proved to have CWD. That started an investigation which, by March 2016, resulted in determining a whitetail prevalence rate of 20% in does and 32% in bucks. CWD was rampant in Arkansas and was completely unknown to the resource managers. Actions enacted by the state include: a prohibition on baiting and feeding, antler point restriction (APR) removal, and a prohibition of carcass movement out of a CWD zone. This is pretty much the same reaction as Michigan except the APR removal. There is scientific support for these actions although they not readily accepted by the hunting community. There is some ongoing discussion about establishing a workgroup to study the risks related to CWD and to propose ways of minimizing those risks. Without a doubt baiting and feeding will be on the list and I suspect APR will also. The hunting community will have to decide which is more important hunting technique or disease free animals. The movement of carcasses is something we all must help prevent as it is the surest way of bringing in the disease. This disease is caused by prions. It is recommended that humans avoid ingesting prions even though the disease has not been found in humans. However, and I quote from a study by a group of scientists from the IRCCS Foundation Carlo Besta Neurological Institute, The findings [of their study] demonstrate that plants can efficiently bind infectious prions and act as carriers of infectivity, suggesting a possible role of environmental prion contamination in the horizontal transmission of the disease. So it isn t the direct contact with contaminated urine, feces, or carcasses that is the only way the disease can be spread. Plants can pick up the disease and pass it on to whatever eats the plants. I think we are all aware that diseases can and do change their make up to become stronger and have an impact on others besides the original victims. The worst areas of contamination in North America are in Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and the great plains of Canada. This is where we get most of our cereal grains which are used for both human and animal consumption. I have to quit now and go have a sandwich. Jim De Clerck
