MONDAY, MAY 17, Gve em shelter say Terrace ]rouths " BY DANA SMTH One hundred and eghteen students at Caledona Senor Secondary School want a youth hostel n Terrace. Out of one hundred and thrtyeght students who completed a questonare about youth hostels, twenty were opposed to the dea. Of the 18 students n favor, most felt that a place s needed to aecomodate travellers at low cost for a few nghts. Students agreed that a cheap, temporary shelter would encourage more people to vst Terrace, and help people who were lookng for work n the area. One s:jde=~ wrote on hs questonare that a hostel was needed "to provde nexpensve aceomodaton for groovy people who are rdng across Canada on ther thumbs". Another student wrote that "Young people should come to Terrace to see the Pacfc Northwest and the beautful Skeena Valley." Another student wrote "Terrace s a nce place to be". One student suggested that a hostel could be a project for Terrace youth to support and partcpate n, and would provde an opportunty for people to get to know each other. WAT )O YOU TlNK? A few students felt that a hostel would provde recreatonal opportunty for people lvng n Terrace Others sad t s unrealstc to expect young students to pay hotel and motel rates--tha hostel charges should be not more than $1 a nght. Thrteen students beleve that hostel aecomodaon should be free. They wrote that the hostel should provde lodgng, food and recreatonal facltes. Students felt that rules governng such a hostel should be comparable to rules of other hostels; no booze, dope or sex, a lmted stay and a curfew. Others sad that people should smply "clean up ther own mess" and "keep t neat". "Puttng rules on people s no good but pople should respect the place and keep t decent." The fnal queston asked students opnon of the communtys responsblty to the youth of the country. The coneensus was that a communty should be responsble for ts youth, but one student represented the vews of many wth the statement "...the youth must also help the communty, not take everythng for granted." "Gve era shelter," was a vew expressed by one student" and shared by others.
