CRIME OVERVIEW / SUCCESSES No report no representation CPF COMMENTARY Representation Commentary Neil McMullen Patrol Cars o Neil asked for more patrol cars (shortage). SAPS understaffed and crime is rising in the area. o One dedicated patrolling car with 2 persons quoted at R4, 500 per month. All would like to hear more as the amount is reasonable. Barking Dogs o Every incident in the last few weeks has been preceded by dogs barking, and in the region where the jackal attacks happened. o We need to heed their warnings. Area Map o After the attacks on the 5th, it was decided to create a map. Gary Palmer sent Neil a map. o Neil now has a database of all the people on the nrah1 group with names, addresses and phone numbers and all the plot numbers. o Will be laminated and put in the police cars if a call comes through they the police will know where to go to. Best Practice - WhatsApp o Need to have several solutions for security Neil started a WhatsApp group a while ago. o This has been successful in getting people talking to each other and to be alert. o 58 persons our two sector police are on it. o Urged people to call him as events happen and not afterwards and Neil will call the police. o Neil has now started a new WhatsApp group for the non-security matters, i.e. a chat group. All transferred across. o The original group is now only for serious security issues this is for shouting help (no chatting on this group) so that the police can monitor it also and will send a car immediately. SAPS Participation o SAPS are on the group. However members have had no response from any of the two SAPS participants since starting the WhatsApp group. o If they do not wish to be on the group, Neil will take them off and ask the Station Commander who he can put on instead. Drug trafficking o Golden Harvest Park get car registration numbers and escalate to Sean Stadler who will escalate to Suren Naidoo. o Please note car colour and registration number and where seen get this to Carmel or Neil. o Neil has started a data base of drug deals being done 2
FEEDBACK FROM THE RESIDENTS ASSOCIATIONS Representation Community (Sean Stadler) (Pat Woods) Duiker Ridge (Craig Du Plessis ) Feedback One break-in on Tin Road One attempted high jacking two weeks ago Community is very proactive doing well at the moment all neighbours involved. Have a combination of WhatsApp have added a sms for sending out vital security information. Also have a Facebook page. Cars patrolling definitely works. This is a combination of everything looking out for neighbours, sending out Sms. Numerous illegal activities without having paperwork in order. CRSwart and Beyers Naude large development going about building illegally trying to fight this off for ages. Standing together with Boskruin. Lots of break-in attempts since the construction has started. They have a security company now who they work hand in hand with. Recent incidents hijacking where they took a car (reported). Two weeks ago mobilised the guys to start a neighbourhood watch. Only have 134 houses in their area so all participate. 4 5 shifts spread across the week. People committed - community taking part WhatsApp group taking off. Community effort and standing together is the strongest solution. Boskruin is setting a good example for them. Most effective form of combatting crime is alert neighbours. Problem is we have grown up behind walls and don t like neighbours. This is a challenge which they are driving to break down. Emergency WhatsApp group and Security Company have been put on as a shortcut on his cell phone screen this works well for instant dialling. San Marco (Roger Costopoulos) Ext 7 (Michael Frauen) Very active over past month 2 noticeable break-ins inside jobs. Pres Fouche and Kelly two houses: o 7.30 pm while occupants at home. Stabbed lady but not badly injured. Got away as Trojan were on their way panic button response. o Week later 12 lunch time, lifted the gate and went in. TV phones gone. The issue was the gardener who had been working and turned off the fence and didn t switch the fence back on. Key issue: make sure the fence is back on. Sonneglans Retirement village elderly European lady who rented at Sonneglans. Daughter came to stay and wanted to borrow a computer from a resident to do a payment. Wanted pin number. Young daughter arrested and mother has been removed as a tenant. Numerous challenges such as robberies through roofs, park issues, speeding. o One house burgled 6 times in a row. Last burglary cleaned out o 1pm, 10am pattern is that they enter through the garage roofs and enter the houses. o Loophole to escape is the Tourmaline Park. 3
Drainage pipe at is a concern issue vagrants come through the park. No fence. Trees fallen two years ago and not cleared up. Tourmaline Road, racing in street as well as night races. Cannot use the Tourmaline Park as the parents are concerned to bring the kids to the park. Domestic workers not safe 4 robberies, teenager robbed twice. Teenager hit against the head her mother was robbed a few days later at 1pm. Cell phones taken. Trying to contact the sector car number most cases no answer. Shooting across the neighbourhood across the park SAPS must get involved. Honeydew West Road no street lights. High speed cars, lots of truck traffic, no pedestrian pavements. If anything is reported to JRA nothing is done. Suspects in CJ71VK GP Hyundai Accent White Comment from Neil McMullen: Neil suggested that these issues be raised in the Randburg Sun get hold of Nicholas Zaal. All residents to him individually to solicit strong response. Off Kelly Road (Thinus Wentzel) Trojan Security excellent Saturday they escorted two intoxicated men out the area. Black Golf battered warning to be on the lookout for them. No street lights are a problem worried as the criminals go for the very dark streets. This impacts people working from home. Comment from Neil McMullen: Report all events to SAPS as there are patterns. If no written record of the complaint they won t do anything about it must be in the occurrence book. Northriding Agricultural Holdings (Neil McMullen) A month full of activity. 6 May Armed robbery Engen garage CR Swart and Tin Road. 4 B/m 3 armed. Blue Toyota Corolla. 6.30pm 12 May Neighbour had a break-in at their house in Valley Road. Got through 6 dogs and 8 people in the house. Forced welded window open. Laptop from car gone. 1:43am this was the second one in a week. Other was across the road. (not reported) 19 May Jackals poisoned in his area no one really cares. SPCA not interested as the Jackals kill pets. Chris going to contact Jan Lehmer about Jackals. Response from SPCA was to contact Nature Conservation. 23 May Neil s gardener reported a man near the river at Zandspruit who was threatening people with a gun. 26 May Reported by Gary Palmer: 4 BM intruders on 394 Valley Road, on the run. Sent request to Sector Commander - W/O Nonyane for a night patrol. 27 May Reported by Andie Palmer: 2 BM in a hole on Cnr Aureole and Spionkop Roads. Look suspicious 30 May At Frank's house, intruders in his maid's quarters SAPS mobile on the way. Arrived in under 4 minutes. Next arrival, ADT 20 minutes after Police had left. 4
1 June Gary Palmer reported: Intruders at 395 Valley Road, mountain bike stolen. ADT was on the scene quick. No injuries. The success is the neighbour called the security company and then the police this is important as everyone is looking out for each other and not leave it to the police. No injuries. Spionkop Road reported suspicious people on road. Alarm at school went off the night before. Neil requested if they could get patrol cars to come around more often. The alarm at the school goes off on a regular basis. Perhaps they need on site security? 5 June Reported by Leigh Potgieter: her domestic witnessed a couple being hijacked by Tin and Kelly Roads. 7pm 6 June Reported by Maureen: Petting zoo had break-in last night. 13:24 Am. The 30 plastic chairs plus generator from the petting farm were recovered on the other side of reserve. The suspects were not found, but it was posted that the reserve is becoming a place for stolen furniture which is too big to carry down the road. Hiding it on the plot. Look for means of access which are not main tarred roads. 7 June Reported by Dave Tudor - he received a SMS from His neighbour at 360 Valley Road. Dogs barking around 12:15 am. Turns out the mesh fence and main fence were compromised and they used that section of the property to gain access to 361 Valley Road. Off Kelly Rd (Barbarossa Ntshingila (Russell van der Weide) (with Sean Stadler ) o Comment Neil suggested we concentrate on escape routes rather than access in criminals will always get in. Monitor the escape routes as one will spot them running with stolen equipment. Sean Stadler did not agree residents do not want unknown people coming in they have vehicle recognition stickers on all cars in the area. They don t want to have any escape routes. They have cars patrolling. His principle is to make it as uncomfortable as possible for unwanted persons in the area. Not too much on the crime front. Good progress at the end of Baleta - the neighbours cleared the area become open and one cannot hide there. There is still a problem with the vagrants around the green belt. Spoke to the Warrant Officer on Tuesday a suitable area has been found to move vagrants / homeless people. SAPS will be looking at all the areas where there are pockets of people the main problem is that criminals live amongst the homeless people. Encouraged that there is an area identified for the homeless to remove them and have a place to stay. Community group and security group set up. Works well and is monitored carefully. 5
FEEDBACK SECURITY SERVICES / COUNCILLORS / PARTIES / JOURNALISTS Representation Feedback Trojan Security (Ross Cronje) ADT (Nicholas Govender) Londoloza (Jono Rudolph) and Police Reservist (Martin Hirtenfelden) Boskruin and incidents - crime has quietened down due largely to Sean s initiative. Hijacking incident fired shots between the hijackers and the security. Few incidents, gate motors Valley Road lots of activity Some clients 9 attempts in the last 6 months Lots of activity in the areas attempted robbery white bakkie, two evenings in Suicide in (young man) Car thefts Attempted break in at Cash Converters never got in. They have put their control room onto a WhatsApp group 3 persons monitor the reaction side. Any security can add their control room to this. Comment: Very important to give correct information especially in a chase descriptions, clothing, rather don t post than post wrong information. Reservist for 10 years currently with Honeydew Cluster Have not been allowed to work SAPs say the reservists are incompetent to use a firearm and have to be trained. Between 40 and 60 hours a month. All they need is SAPS to give infrastructure car and firearm. They hunt drug dealers also. Would like the community to put pressure on SAPS to re-instate the reservists. Want to work, do good, work for free. Comment from Roger Costopoulos : Plight is well known. Lots of pressure has been put on Province. Brigadier cannot respond unless Province responds. We need reservists but we have to wait for Province. Suggested all CPF attendees write to the CPF office so that this can be escalated to Province. We need reservists. The more people we have supporting the CPF the stronger our voice with SAPS. Councillors Wendy Alexander is the DA candidate for the new Ward 134 She advised she is present to listen and residents can escalate issues to her. wendyrobyn@me.com Journalists/Parties No representation GENERAL CPF needs funds even R5 is acceptable. Do fundraising or ask people to donate on a monthly basis. This keeps the CPF office in operation. Debit Order forms available for facilitating donations. Donated Computers also available if Carmel would like any - Michael Frauen will contact her. 6
