1 March 2016 Volume 38, Issue 3 A Diablo Valley Mustang Association Publication Car of the Month Hugh and Sally Blackwell s 1965 Coupe This 1965 Mustang was purchased new by my father in Tucson, Arizona where I grew up, went to college and met my future wife. My Dad gave the car to my younger sister, to go to college in Tucson, around When she finished college and got married, my father asked for the Mustang back. My sister and her new husband moved to New Jersey for jobs and then back to New Mexico for jobs again. My Dad asked her if they wanted to buy the car for $2,000 in My sister drove the car to New Mexico and put it in her garage. She started it up every week but didn t drive it much because the gas cap kept being stolen. In 2005 my sister asked my daughter Susie, who lives in Lafayette, if she wanted the car, under the condition that it stay in the family. My daughter had the Mustang shipped to Oakland by car-carrier. When it arrived, they backed it off the carrier forgetting the brakes didn t work well. The results were it wouldn t stop and slammed into the semi-trucks hitch. It had substantial damage done to the bumper, trunk and rear end. Now the restoration story starts. The body damage was repaired, by the transport company, at a body shop in Oakland that is no longer in business. A different color paint was put on. It was white but a new blue was picked out. 3 DVMA Dispatch March 2016 COMMUNICATION: defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary as the ways of sending information to people by using technology. DVMA is committed to communicating effectively to both our current members and our potential future members through a number of methods. Up until recently our newsletter has been our main communications tool. Ed Guldner spends many hours each month assembling and editing our newsletter and it is very effective at keeping our club members well informed. But the Board has recognized the need to communicate to other Mustang lovers and those looking for info about DVMA from outside the club by means of a website and Facebook pages. Jim Blair is taking over the new webmaster position and we now have a classy-looking website that we really want you to check out. To do that just go to Jim Blair and Dave Miller have also opened up Facebook accounts for members and people looking for a Mustang club. To go to the Facebook pages just type in DVMA in the search space. This will give you two options. One is listed as a closed group which is for current members who s dues are paid in full. All club members can go to this site and click join group. All info on this site will only be shared among other members. The second site is open to outsiders who are looking for a club in their area or info about our organization. This site also has a link to the Mustang Club of America as we are a regional MCA club. We see these recent moves as a positive step toward reaching out to other Mustang owners, growing our club and bringing us into the 21st century! If you were at our February club meeting you were treated to a talk by detailer-extraordinaire Ron Morse. He has detailed many award-winning cars including cars at Pebble Beach Concourse. Ron let us in on many of the processes that he s spent a successful career developing. We hope to have him back to a future meeting to give us more tips on detailing and news about new products. So join us at our March meeting at Fuddrucker s, March 9 at 7 pm. See you there! John Haugrud , hogdude@astound.net You Can Now Use Pay Pal to Enter DVMA s 18th Annual Show and Shine Back to Le Mans Saturday, May 7th As you read above, Jim Blair has done an outstanding job revising our Web Site. In fact, our old website, DVMA.ORG is now redirected to the new one. One of the great new features is you can fill out the entry form on line and pay via Pay Pal. This makes it really easy to enter your car in the show. You can still enter by printing out or copying page 6 of this Feed Bag, or download a copy of the entry form from the website and mailing it in. Work on the show is progressing, we have sponsors, we have entries and we have vendors for the midway. National Mustang Day Sunday, April 17th What are you going to do for your Mustang on Sunday, April 17th. We will keep you posted here and by on any events. Golden Hills Biggest Little Car Show Saturday, May 21st Golden Hills Mustang Club will be holding their 32nd annual Biggest Little Car Show on Saturday, May 18th at the Waterfront Plaza in Suisun City. It is open to all Ford makes and pedal cars. In fact, there is a pedal car to be raffled off at the show. Check in will be from 7 to 9 am and the show runs from 10 am to 3 pm. It is a great show in a superb waterfront setting with lots of vendors. A portion of the show proceeds will go to benefit the North Bay Stand Down, a Homeless Veterans Resource Fair ( The entry form is available at Magic of the Mustang, June 3rd to 5th A Mustang Club of America National Show Hosted by The Reno Mustang Car Club What better place to join together to celebrate 52 years of our favorite classic automobile, the Ford Mustang and the 40th anniversary of the MCA, than Reno, Nevada? 4 Car of the Month Hugh and Sally Blackwell s 1965 Coupe (Continued) My daughter had no room in her garage to put the Mustang, so it was just sitting on the side on the house, uncovered, getting pine sap on it. I decided it was going to waste there, so I decided to take it off her hands and put it in my garage and see what I could do with it in It needed a lot of work! I started by having the transmission overhauled, new brakes, tune-up, shocks and the carburetor rebuilt at Mostly Mustangs in Oakland. Jack there told me about Bay Area Mustang Assoc. (B.A.M.A.). It sat in my garage until I got motivated to start restoring it to its original condition, which was in For the next 4 years I worked on the car and became the best customer Ken at Mustang Parts House in Dublin, ever had. I rebuilt or replaced everything on the Mustang, from front to back, that I thought needed it. I joined B.A.M.A. in June of 2009 for some help on my restoration. I had Sure Fit Seat- Covers in San Leandro, Ca. do the whole insides, except the door panels which I did later after replacing the door hardware. My favorite tool for my restoration has been the Pickle Fork, which is used on tie rods. The Mustang s 1st award was a 1st at the 2012 MCA Show in Concord, CA. Since then it has gotten awards at several Ponies & Snakes, Silver MCA at the Golden Hills Show and was at the 50th Anniversary Shows in Las Vegas and Pleasanton, CA. I continue to make improvements after every show it is in. Hugh Blackwell Adopt-a-Street and First Saturday Breakfast Saturday, February 6th I want to thank everyone who helped do Adopt-A-Street on February 6th. In response to our requesting help we had the following show up: Carole Klevins, Brian Denning, Ken Anderson, John & Anne H., Harry & Karen D., Larry Booth, Ed G. Larry was a little late, and, as Larry says, If you are not there, we will talk about you. Well we talked about Larry until he got there. The Haugruds, the Davises and I went to lunch at Giant Chef Burger afterwards. After that, Harry Davis led a tour to the Califoria Auto Museum in Sacramento. See the pictures below and on the next page. The next dates for Adopt-a-Street are April 30, August 6 and November 5. Mark your calendar. 5 California Automobile Museum Free Museum Day The 18th Annual California Automobile Museum Free Museum Day was on February 6. The Museum is in Sacramento, next to Old Towne, and is a fantastic place to visit any time! Cars of all types and vintages were displayed. The display changes frequently. There is even a for sale area although it is roped off with cars placed closely together; see the website for all the vehicles and details. Harry and Karen Davis, John and Anne Haugrud, Lou and Lori Cooper, and Brian Denning met at noon and caravanned to Sacramento. Lori and Brian drove layed by a lingering traffic jam at the Highway 4 to I-80 junction due to another drive by shooting at Hilltop early Saturday morning. The best time for the leg was won by someone who went East and across the Carquinez Bridge and looped back, coming in at exactly the correct time. The next two legs were less eventful as we wound through Martinez, Pleasant Hill, Pacheco, Martinez again, onto Highway 4 to McEwen Road into Port Costa and back to Crockett. Several of us managed to do the minimum time on the last leg coming in around 22 minutes when we should have had 25 minutes. As I was told many years ago, If I am not disqualified, I m not going fast enough. There were 3 things we were to look for: On legs 1 and 3 were a barricade with a sign on it and on leg 2 the price of diesel at a Shell station. There were 3 Shell stations, each with a different price for diesel. Robin Paulsell, owner of East Bay Classics, and one of our advertisers, had an excellent catered Texas barbeque lunch with a choice of their beautiful Mustangs! The Museum was crowded for blocks in pulled pork, every direction, and parking spaces were available when some oth- chicken breast or trier car pulled out. There were lots of docents to ask questions or directions to see every display. Sitting in the café area at the end of tip sandwich with potato the afternoon was a welcome break! It was a sunshine day! Stangz Across the Straits salad and Saturday, February 27th drink. EveryThis past Saturday was Stangz Across the Straits VI at East one went Bay Classics in Crockett. It was a fun time with a large group. home with at The participation award was won by a new club from the Fresno least one door through Manteca area, Mustangs of the San Jouquin, who arrived prize. Particin a 19 car caravan. The overall winner was a young couple from ipating from MotSJ driving a Focus. In fact, MotSJ took all the awards for the DVMA were rally. The club was founded in 2014 in Fresno. The Manteca Belinda and chapter will be officially founded this month. Jim Blair, The first leg which went on I-80 for a short distance was delinda and Doug Gompertz and myself. Thanks Robin for putting on a fun rally, a great lunch and a good time. Ed G 5

7 DVMA General Meeting Minutes, Fuddruckers, Concord, CA February 10, 2016 The meeting was called to order by President John Haugrud at 7:00 pm at Fuddruckers in Concord CA. WELCOME to everyone in attendance. GUESTS Ron and Linda Morse, Joe Dunham, and Jay Costa BIRTHDAYS and ANNIVERSARIES Anne Haugrud announced the list of birthdays and anniversaries for February. Congratulations to each birthday person and anniversary celebrants. SPEAKER Ron Morse until recently the owner of Lamorinda Detail, announced that he will speak about car cleaning. Ron has just retired and closed his Lafayette shop on Nov 30. He spent years finding the right products for the right conditions and wants to share his passion for beautiful cars. He spoke about exterior and interior cleaning at past meetings and would like to discuss cleaning the engine area. To recap, remember that soap goes in the bottom of the bucket and add water. Grime and dirt settles in the bottom of the bucket, so keep your cloth high in the water. Does anyone wash their car with dish soap??? Washing with dish soap takes the oils out of the paint. Use another product by Meguiars. Use special nozzles on the hose a nozzle that swivels and can be disconnected is best. Use certain towels for the conditions. Dry the car with a synthetic chamois; the synthetic works just as well and costs less. Use glass cleaner by 3M; Ron has special microfiber towels for glass. For tires, use orange crush by Meguiars. Ron recommends putting down a floor mat or covering before spraying the cleaner. Use the citrus spray cleaner to take off residue of bumper stickers, etc. For an ultimate spray, use with Meguiars on a towel. There are towels for interior and dashboard, etc. Be sure to protect your hands and wear latex gloves to use all cleaning products. NEW SHOP OWNERS Joe Dunham and Jay Costa were introduced. Call J.D. Mobile Detail at and for the finest detailing available. WEBMASTER Jim Blair Jim has been appointed Webmaster with Board approval.
