1 April 2018 Volume 48, Issue 8 Encore Club Dear Members, President s Message I am pleased we were able to donate $3000 to Wilton Community Assistance Fund (for Wilton Social Services) and $200 to the Wilton Senior Center with funds raised at the October luncheon. I have included the details from our Treasurer, Karen Birck, so you understand how we arrived at that amount. Attendees enjoyed the evening and several new & potential new members volunteered to take leadership roles in club activities. Thank you to Chairperson Holly and the nominating committee - Carol Comiskey, Alice Morgan, Joyce Ploder, and Bonnie Thompson - who worked hard to confirm nominees for all board and activity chair positions. The Proposed Slate for the Executive Board and Activities Chairpersons is included in this newsletter. Members will vote at our Annual General Meeting which is our May luncheon to be held on Thursday May 17th at Silver Spring Country Club; save the date! This spring we will visit two American Impressionist sites. The Bush Holley House and the Florence Griswold in May. Chick Flick Date: April 10 Time: 11:00 a.m. Fee: $7.00 A National Historic Landmark and member of the American Association of Museums, Bush Holley House is well known for its collection Book of 19th Discussion century Impressionist paintings. Built in the 18th century, by the late 1800 s it had become a gathering place for artists and writers and remained so for nearly a century when it had become known as the Cos Cob Art Colony. 5 Page 5 Mah Jongg The Encore Mah Jongg group meets every Wednesday at 1:00 pm at the Wilton Senior Center. If you know how to play Mah Jongg and would like to join the group or be a substitute, please come by any Wednesday afternoon between 1:00-3:00 to meet the Mah Jongg ladies. We most often have two tables of four players and would be happy to add another table. If you would like to learn to play Mah Jongg, training may be available at the Norwalk Senior Center. Participation at the Norwalk Senior Center requires that you become a member. For more information, please call Co-chairs: Gale Roeder Pat Wernig Loft Hopping May 1-Save the Date As the spring gardens reach peak bloom, we will visit the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, where Miss Flo, as her boarders called her, hosted annual gatherings of innovative American artists, including Childe Hassam. Included with a visit to the art-filled house is a guided tour of the adjoining museum and of course a stroll through the gardens. A fee off $13 covers admission and a guide fee. We will have the choice of several nearby restaurants as well as Cafe Flo on the grounds. Diana Reische has a 20 minute video of the museum for loan to anyone who would like a preview. But, Donal is not traveling alone Aunt Kate s husband has joined him. Along the way, the young boy and older man have a number of adventures. June selection is Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J. D. Vance. The book group is open to all Encore members!
