I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season! Mine was amazing! Between my time here for our Resident Holiday Party, our New Year s Social Hour, the time I got to spend with the staff at our holiday party and time with my husband...i really had the jolliest of holiday seasons!!! Thank you for making it such a wonderful time of the year! I am anticipating 2019 to be even better! We will kick off the new year by serving YOU breakfast in bed...or at least breakfast brought to your apartment. We are so appreciative or your generosity during the holiday season, this is our way of saying Thank You for being you! We will also host our annual soup & sandwich luncheon. This is always a nice way to warm up on a cold day. Don t miss out!!! Crystal is also planning a fun craft for January. Get your photos ready to put on display in a nostalgic, cute photo cube. This craft will be super fun so don t forget to sign up. Lastly, although as of this writing the weather is sunny and warming up a bit, please remember if the weather gets bad (snow &/or ice) the bus will not run. Out& About Out on the Town in January! Join us every Wednesday for a fun outing to some of St. Louis best restaurants! If you have a suggestion, just stop by the front desk. We visit all over town, so be sure to sign up! Wednesday, January 2: Rich & Charlie s Known for being a St. Louis favorite, Rich & Charlie s is a must-visit Italian spot! With a delicious menu featuring Italian dishes such as pasta, seafood... it will be hard to save room for the cannolis! The sauces, sausages, salad dressing and pastas are all made in-house with only the freshest, local ingredients. Wednesday, January 9: Down Under This Wednesday we will take a trip to Down Under! This Aussie-inspired restaurant offers many choices from the gyro to burgers; you can t go wrong! Try an appetizer while you wait or save room for dessert; either way you re sure to leave happy. RSVP to the book to save yourself a spot. Wednesday, January 16: BrickTop s This week we will skip on down to BrickTop s in Frontenac. This upscale restaurant is known for serving gourmet New American dishes that will leave you satisfied and full! The fresh salads and made-from-scratch entrées are definite crowd-pleasers. The fish tacos are a must-try and the steaks are divine with a glass of wine. There is something for everyone at BrickTop s. Be sure to try the deviled eggs! Wednesday, January 23: C.J. Mugg s CJ Mugg s Bar and Grill offers an extensive menu which features appetizers, salads, homemade soups, pastas and risottos. They also offer fresh fish and beef, gourmet pizzas, quesadillas, sandwiches, and burgers... did I forget something?! We always have a fabulous time at C.J. s, so don t forget to RSVP to the book. 3 3 Wednesday, January 30: BRIO Tuscan Grille We will finish out the month of January with BRIO Tuscan Grille. Join your neighbors for an outing that offers a warm, relaxed atmosphere and authentic Italian-Tuscan inspired menu! Brio s emphasis is on prime steaks, chops and homemade pasta specialties. Don t forget to save room for dessert! Word Search Success A fun way to exercise the brain, expand one s vocabulary or just pass the time, word searches are one of the most popular types of puzzles. The earliest puzzle resembling a word search can be found in Everybody s Illustrated Book of Puzzles, published in 1890 in London. Titled Proverbs Within a Maze, the puzzle featured a grid of letters, and readers were instructed to wind their way through the puzzle to find hidden sayings. The American word search as we now know it first appeared in 1968, when Norman E. Gibat created a puzzle for a want-ad digest that he published for Readers Group Cozy up with a book with neighbors and friends of the library! This month our group will be reading, The American Spirit, by David McCullough. Not a part of readers group?? Just see the front desk about how you can join in the fun this winter! The group will meet on Friday, January 4 at 11:00 a.m. in the lobby. businesses in Norman, Okla. Calling it an Oklahoma anagram, he designed a grid of jumbled letters containing the names of 34 towns. The game was an instant hit, with readers demanding more and local teachers using it as a student activity. Gibat s puzzle design eventually spread across the country. Founded in 1991, the nonprofit encourages people to get together with friends and knit or crochet blankets, hats, scarves and other items. Blood Pressure Clinic A nurse from Martha s Hands will be here every other Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Wellness Center on the third floor for blood pressure screenings and to answer all your health-related questions. Passing Time With Cuckoo Clocks At the strike of each hour, a tiny toy bird pops through a door and cheerfully delivers its song: Coo-coo! This charming feature has made the cuckoo clock a classic timepiece. Historians say the wall clock s familiar design originated in Germany s Black Forest region in the 1700s. By using a system of bellows, gears and weights, clockmakers there were able to replicate the cuckoo s call and regulate when the bird popped out to announce the hour. Townspeople carved the clocks using logs from the forest. Be sure to RSVP to the book. Kolache Is Back! Let s board the bus on Thursday, January 17 at 10:00 a.m., for a trip to the St. Louis Kolache Factory. St. Louis Kolache offers sweet and savory fillings using local ingredients. A kolache is a type of pastry that holds a portion of fruit or cheese, surrounded by a puffy cushion of supple dough. There are so many to choose from, you can t make a wrong choice! See the front desk for a menu of what they have to offer or with any questions on how to order online for easy pick up!
