1 Sales overview, Christmas market stalls Winter in Antwerp General information The five locations that have become a cornerstone of Winter in Antwerp - Groenplaats, Handschoenmarkt, Grote Markt, Suikerrui and Steenplein, will remain in The Christmas market opens on Saturday 8 December 2018 and will be open every day until Sunday 6 January We aim to create the same atmosphere throughout all the locations with festive lighting and decoration, including fixed fire sources, warm-up areas, cosy seating areas, etc. Catering outlets located on squares where chalets will be erected will also have the opportunity to set up winter terraces from which they can serve food and drink. 1. Groenplaats The Christmas market on Groenplaats will be set up in a square around the statue of Rubens, between the rows of trees with an opening towards the inside of the square. The centre of Groenplaats will accommodate an ice rink for skate hire plus food and drink outlets operated under concession. Catering chalets will be grouped together along the edge of Nationalestraat, with views to a line of fire stretching 30 metres along the boarding around the ice rink. Merchandise chalets will be grouped together near the Hilton Hotel and the edge of the Cathedral of Our Lady. A number of chalets can have a side hatch, see the overview below. Handschoenmarkt Like last year, we will not be setting chalets up in Handschoenmarkt this year. The annual tradition is to use Handschoenmarkt for the nativity scene. There will also be a large Christmas tree. 3. Grote Markt Chalets will be set up in different zones. Some of the merchandise chalets will have the hatches facing the Brabo statue, while others will encircle the statue itself. We will also be installing an eye-catching installation around which the catering chalets will be set up. The side of the Town Hall will be kept clear. As in previous years, Grote Markt will also be home to the giant Christmas tree. There will also be a unique eye-catching installation to draw the attention of the media and visitors. The installation will be larger than in previous years, covering a large section of Grote Markt. The open nature of the canopy will keep the flow of visitors moving, and will also accommodate seating areas for visitors to relax whatever the weather. Catering chalets will be set up around the canopy, which will be illuminated with festive lighting. A temporary radio studio, Joe FM, will also be set up in Grote Markt from 14 to 30 December. Joe FM will broadcast live while the Christmas market is open, and will feature numerous guest appearances and promotions. Joe FM will also be a significant media partner for the event. Steenplein The chalets will be set up under the trees facing one another or facing the edge of the street. Two areas will be provided for winter activities: the wishing wall will be adjacent to Steen Castle. The open-air terrace with interactive elements will also be adjacent to Steen Castle. Winter activity with food and drink outlets will be located next to the pedestrian bridge. To improve the quality of the offering at the Christmas market, we intended to make stall rates less expensive for stallholders selling handmade goods (not food). Handmade goods are products produced by original and traditional means. Each product is unique as the maker pays individual attention to the production process and material (machine production is not permitted). Handmade goods are much more expensive than industrial (machine-made) goods, as few to no economies of scale are. 7
