1 Celebrating 30 years! VILLAGE CRIER Volume 12, Issue 9 October 2015 We have all enjoyed this glorious September weather, and now it is time to enjoy October. Fall foliage is on the horizon and the chilly weather will be more pronounced but October is still a wonderful month to enjoy the great outdoors. There are a number of local organizations that sponsor nature walks in our area and all over our incredibly diverse and scenic State, i.e. RI Wild Plant Society, Audubon Society and The South Kingstown Land Trust to mention a few. The fall decorations at the Clubhouse look great, thank you Donna & Vinnie Gentes and Joyce Noonan, for your design skills and willingness to transform the Clubhouse entrance. It looked wonderful for Saturday s 30 th Anniversary Barbeque and will for the rest of the Fall. Kudos to Victoria Clare, President of VWPHOA, and all of her fellow Board members and volunteers, it wouldn t have happened without you. Jack Rodway and The Larry Brown Swing Band were simply terrific, featuring on vocals, Jimmy & Carroll, and our own Kim Marcoux, what a treat. VILLAGE HOUSEKEEPING: New guidelines for recycling, PLEASE NO PLASTIC BAGS TO HOLD YOUR RECYCLABLES. There is a problem Statewide with other items being included in plastic bags that are not recyclables, the waste companies are being fined and will no longer pick up bags in the recycling bins. Please remember for those needing assistance with curbside toters, Joe Fuller is here to help, just call the office to be added to our list. We do have addition blue bins at the office if you need one. The Village tree service, Treeworks, continues to prune and remove trees as needed to protect our homes and property in anticipation of winter weather. Call the office to be added to the list. Generator installs in The Village have been successfully wired by Tom Truppi from Tru Electric. Please be sure to hire a licensed and bonded electrician, short cut are not the way to go, be diligent and safe. To protect the trees in your yard be sure to have the grass at the base of the trunk removed and mulched, so the weed eaters does not injure the bark, this is one sure way to kill a tree. Fall fertilizing by Fuller Lawns, will take place in the middle of October. This is a slow release winterizer, please let us know if you do not want your lawn fertilized. Thank you for your food donations to the Jonnycake Center, 95 lbs. were donated, this food drive continues with the donation box at the office. THANK YOU! Officials blame bathroom wipes for sewer clogs, towelettes labeled as flushable reportedly fail to break down. PLEASE DO NOT FLUSH THEM, THEY WILL DESTROY THE SEPTIC SYSTEM. Free notary service continues at the office, just give Lisa a call. Please leave your lamp post on for safe traveling in the evening. CELEBRATE and ENJOY OCTOBER, Lisa and Anita
2 Gardener s Corner by Nina Driscoll October, the month when the sun is gentle, the breezes dry and refreshing, and trees shower us with their brilliant colored leaves. It s also the me of year to approach the garden with a vigor not possible in the heat of summer. Have you ever no ced how few flowers, other than chrysanthemums, bloom in fall? Now is the me to look at the perennials in bloom at plant nurseries to plan or plant for a good late summer show next year. Ask for those that are deer resistant. This is also the me when we begin pu ng our plants to sleep for the winter. But just as hiberna ng animals gather food and water for their long sleep, so plants must have sustenance to reach spring in good condi on. Lack of water this summer has stressed many plants, and they need a good dose of water to survive the winter. In the absence of any heavy rainfalls, two or three deep waterings of valued plants should take place before the ground freezes. The other major assist in winterizing plants is mulch, obtained from nurseries or absolutely free from the fallen leaves in your back yard. Mulch offers protec on from the cold, but even more important, prevents damage from alterna ng temperatures and the resul ng heaving of the soil. Oak leaves make a healthy mulch, but should be shredded by your lawn mower or a leaf blower with a mulching a achment. Leave a few inches around the base of trees and shrubs free of mulch to discourage mice or chipmunks from chewing on trunks. Pine needles also make good mulch, but only for acid loving plants. (Oak leaves are somewhat acid as well. Azaleas and rhododendron love them, as do earth worms. Maple leaves are a bit more alkaline.) So as not to encourage new growth, wait un l the plants are dormant to mulch. For an early burst of bulbs, remove their blanket of mulch in early spring. LIBRARY: Several items were left in the library after the community yard sale of Sept 12th. These include a baby feeding seat, Grey colored hoodie, wooden wine tote, box of drinking glasses, and an assortment of items with a green dish as the major item. If these belong to you, please pick them up. They will be removed as of Oct 15th. Carol
3 VWP Women s Club The Village at Wordens Pond Women s Club met at the Clubhouse on Thursday, September 10, The meeting opened at 7 PM with the Pledge of Allegiance led by President, Lois Keenan. The Women s Club has planned a bake sale in conjunction with the HMO s annual yard sale. The membership voted to attend the matinee performance of Dirty Rotten Scoundrals at Granite Theater in Westerly on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at 2 PM. The cost for seniors is $22. Information will be posted in mailboxes which include sign up sheets. Attendees will car pool and were made aware that handicapped parking is available but limited therefore anyone in need should call the theater beforehand to reserve a spot. Pauline Rattey has volunteered to organize a three day/two night bus trip to Algonquin, Maine sometime after Columbus Day. It will include great meals and relaxation as well as shopping at LL Bean in Kennebunkport. This is a repeat trip which was a highlighted experience a couple of years ago thanks to our previous president, the late Barbara Keaney. Lois Keenan and Pat Douglas will visit Spain Restaurant to reserve December 10 th for our annual Christmas dinner. This event location was also started by Barbara Keaney and is favored by the membership. Thank you to Lois Christy and Pauline Rattey for providing tonight s delicious treats. Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 8 th at 7 PM. It will include our favorite Brown Paper Bag Auction program! Each member is asked to bring an item hidden in a bag that will be bid on by the group sight unseen. Your donation may include something old or new-serious or funny-handmade or store bought-big or small or whatever! Bring your change and dollars and prepare yourself for a bidding competition, surprise and laughs. Money earned will be donated to a charity. It s not too late the Women s Club. Join us at our next scheduled meeting: Thursday October 8, PM Craig Smith, son-in-law of Bill Lacasse, built this case dedicated to the late Dick Zarlenga. The glass case is finished with maple wood. It hangs above Dick s pool table in the basement of the clubhouse and contains Dick s pool stick. I thought this would be an appropriate memorial for the man that started the ball rolling by organizing a pool club nearly 20 years ago that continues today. House Powerwashing continues with Dwight Kenyon, please call the office to be added to his schedule, Dwight Kenyon will also continue to check the condition of your heat tapes and furnace roof caps. The fee he charges is $ 25.00, call the office to be placed on his list. Checks are payable to Dwight Kenyon.
4 HI NEIGHBORS IT IS THAT TIME AGAIN COMMONLY CALLED AEP WHICH STANDS FOR THE ANNUAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD FOR MEDICARE. IN CASE YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH AEP, IT RUNS FOR ONLY 7 WEEKS FROM OCT 15th TO DEC 7 TH. THESE 7 WEEKS GIVE ANYONE WHO IS ON A MEDICARE PLAN OR WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO JOIN A MEDICARE PLAN AN OPPORTUNITY TO CHOOSE A NEW PLAN OR TO CHANGE AN EXISTING PLAN. IF YOU CURRENTLY HAVE AN ADVANTAGE PLAN WITH EITHER BLUE CROSS OR UNITED HEALTH CARE THEY RENEW THEIR PLANS WITH MEDICARE EVERY YEAR. AS A RESULT THEY USUALLY MAKE ADJUST- MENTS TO THEIR PLANS EACH YEAR, SUCH CHANGES USUALLY INVOLVE CHANGES IN PREMIUMS, COPAYS AND DEDUCTIBLES FOR BOTH THE HEALTH PORTION OF THE PLANS AND THE PHARMCEUTICAL PORTION OF THE PLANS. FOR THAT REASON IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU CHECK YOUR ANNUAL NOTICE OF CHANGE THAT EACH COMPANY IS OBLIGATED TO SEND OUT EACH YEAR ON OR ABOUT OCTOBER 1ST. IT LOOKS LIKE A LOT OF READING BUT THE IMPORTANT ITEMS ARE MADE CLEAR. IF YOU ARE HAVING DIFFICULTY WITH THE VERBIAGE AND THE MEANING OF THE PLAN, I AM HAVING THREE COMMUNITY MEETINGS THIS YEAR AT THE VILLAGE CLUBHOUSE AND I WILL BE EXPLAINING BLUE CROSS ADVANTAGE PLANS IN DETAIL. SHOULD YOU HAVE A UNITED HEALTH CARE PLAN I AM ALWAYS AVAILABLE BY PHONE OR A HOME VISIT TO GUIDE YOU. THE TIMES AND DATES OF THE MEETINGS ARE AS FOLLOWS: OCTOBER 16 TH ---10: AM NOVEMBER 3 RD ---10: AM DECEMBER 6 TH --- 1:30 PM YOU MAY NOTICE THIS YEAR THAT I AM WITH A GROUP CALLED DOCTOR S CHOICE USA.
