1 September 2015 Volume 12, Issue 9 Celebrating 30 years! Village Crier September, remains one of our favorite months, clear blue skies, crisp fresh air, mums, asters, ideal sleeping weather (coming soon), pumpkins, gourds and fabulous foliage in The Village and of course surrounding scenic Worden s Pond. We continue to welcome new residents, as we celebrate our 30 th anniversary as The Village. The Village Homeowners Association has numerous activities planned for September, we look forward to seeing you there, visiting with your neighbors and meeting some of our terrific new residents, have fun. The Clubhouse now has a fabulous new piano, donated to us by Brenda Leeber. Please be sure to thank Brenda for this very generous gift, which allows us all to enjoy this SAMICK Piano, a real jewel of an instrument. Piano players are welcome. NO SOLICITATION ON ANY KIND IS PERMITTED IN THE VILLAGE. OUR SIGN ON LEISURE HAS BEEN TAKEN AND NEW SIGNS HAVE BEEN ORDERED. ONE NEW SIGN WILL GO THERE BACK ON LEISURE, AS WELL AS THE CLUBHOUSE AREA. Please know, that I would never allow anyone to visit our residents door to door. If this happens again, don t answer the door, call the office and we will have them removed from the property. There are some very unscrupulous people out their, DO NOT TRUST THEM, they should not be in The Village. Bocce is in full swing, great to see all the players this summer. Neighbors with dogs, please remember that we are pet friendly and we do expect you to pick up after your pet, especially at the Bocce Court. Deposit your plastic bag in the trash tooter outside the Clubhouse, we appreciate your cooperation, we all need to have a place to walk and play. Great prices on oil right now, we had a delivery from Dial last week, as low as $ 1.68/ gal. Power washing continues with Dwight Kenyon, please call the office to be added to our schedule, ~continued next page...

2 ~continued from page 1 Book keeping time again: you are all aware that we did not increase the amount of the land lease this year, however, the $ 42 property tax pass through for last year was due in July, This is a once a year fee, so within the next month some residents will receive a letter or a call from us regarding a balance for either a missed pass thru payment, wrong land lease amount etc any questions call the office, The Village Newsletter continues to be online along with our monthly calendar, go to click on community. Thank you to our wonderful Editor, Marylou Butler, we couldn t do it without you, many thanks! CELEBRATE and ENJOY SEPTEMBER, Lisa and Anita VWP Women s Club President Keenan reminded the membership that the Women s Club has reserved two tables for the bake sale scheduled on September 12th. We will receive phone calls to remind us to bring our contributions on the Friday evening before the sale or early Saturday morning. Details regarding Granite Theater s production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels will be announced at the September meeting. It was then decided by the women that we were ready for the much awaited program- Our wine tasting event! Lois pointed out posters with information regarding the wines to be tested. Water was available to cleanse the palates of participants in the wine tasting event. Several varieties of both red and white wine were provided as well as non- alcoholic beverages. Check-off sheets were available to determine the winner(s) of the favorite wines. Results will be announced at our next meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 3, FLU CLINIC SAVE THE DATE Date: Thursday Oct. 8th Time: 4-6 pm Sponsored by South County Hospital Watch for more information. 4 Gardener s Corner By Nina Driscoll CATALOG TIME! This is the me of year many of us get excited about ordering spring flowering bulbs, but here at the Village, it s helpful to limit your enthusiasm to daffodils. The local animal life, including deer, rabbits, and mice, will be delighted to share your tulips, crocus and lilies, but not your daffodils. Allium, Dutch Iris, and Scilla are other safe choices. Daffodils come in a temp ng variety 25,000 actually. One may choose for size, fragrance, color, form, and me of bloom. Van Engelen and John Scheepers (same company ownership) are excellent sources. Breck s has nice bulbs, but high prices. Ice Follies, Mount Hood, and Thalia are among my favorites, but many other varie es are hard to resist. Daffodils are easy to plant and care for, loyally reappearing every year in increasingly large clumps. You might try for a naturalized look, plan ng in large free form groupings, rather than in rows. WARNING Have you no ced bright, round, yellow orange spots on the leaves of your crabapple trees. This is Cedar Apple Rust, a fungus disease that requires another host plant cedar or other ornamental junipers to complete its life cycle, spreading from the juniper to crabapple and then back to juniper. Look for masses of orange jelly like growth on the branches of your junipers, and cut back severely. WHERE TO DISPOSE OF TREE AND SHRUB TRIMMINGS Some in the Village may not be familiar with the drop off place for trimmings. It s on Li le Pond Road. Turn right a er the Clubhouse, drop off is on the le. The trimmings are composted for later use in The Village. No trash of any kind, especially no plas c bags or containers are permi ed. We may wishfully hope that trimmings thrown into the woods will just disappear, but most con nue to sit there, crea ng an unsightly view and a fire hazard, as well as housing for some animals you may not choose for neighbors. Early September can be some of the best beach times. No crowds, great weather and warm water. Don t put those flip flops away just yet! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY Best wishes go out to Art and Carol Dawley on their 60th wedding anniversary! Thanks for all your hard work in the Village!
