2 KEEPING YOU INFORMED MOSC Newsletter June, July, August 2013 Page Annual Fireman s Street Dance a GREAT! success The Marine Volunteer Public Safety department would like to extend a special thank you to Loralee DiLorenzo, all of the volunteers and the supporters who continually dedicate their time and energy to make this event so enjoyable for everyone! Also a big thank you to all of the people who continually support this event with their attendance and donations. Over $7, was raised during this event. If you are still interested in making a donation to the Marine Public Safety Department you may send your donation to the City of Marine at PO Box 250, Marine on St. Croix, MN ROADS INFORMATION Public Works The seal coating for this year will be a Trap rock Seal Coat. The application is messy for about two weeks and then the excess is swept up and the road is left with a new surface that will be blue in color. The roads that are being seal coated this year are; Berkey, Holmes, Rose, Rosabell and Pine Street between Second and Third Street. Seal coating and crack filling is an important procedure to have done to preserve the roadway for years to come. Public Trail Announcement While the City encourages all residents to use and enjoy the City trails, there are a few guidelines to remember which will help improve safety and enhance the beauty of the trail system. If you have any concerns please contact Council member Chris Mowery at General User Guideline: No Horses! All Marine City Trails are Posted No Horses Due to trail damage and erosion concerns. Keep right so others can pass. Obey traffic signs and rules. Respect adjoining landowners rights and privacy. Share the trail with others. Enjoy the beauty of nature and do not disturb the plants and animals. No motorized traffic (except for motorized wheelchairs). Keep all pets on a leash and remove all waste. Pick up all garbage and litter. Warn other trail users when passing. Stay on designated trails; do not take shortcuts.

3 MOSC Newsletter June, July, August 2013 KEEPING YOU INFORMED Page 3 COMPOST SITE Wednesdays, noon to 7pm and Saturdays from 9am until 4pm. The City asks that you please abide by the following rules 1. No garbage bags. (Please take all paper and plastic bags home with you) 2. No sticks or brush! 3. No Trash! (This is NOT a dump. Please keep all glass, metals and plastics out of the compost pile) 4. The brush pile is available for Marine residents only! (The compost attendant will have a list of all Marine residents. If you are not on the list, please contact the City office.) 5. As always, the compost site will close during weather when there is thunder and lightening. Mill Site The Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) has approved funding for the Mill Site for the next 2 years. This will help us to continue our improvements at the Mill Site. We are in discussions with MHS for improvements to the trail to the river behind the General Store and are cautiously optimistic these will happen by this fall. A short grass prairie is being established on the east side of the upper trail, around the kiln ruins. All Fund-A-Tree trees survived despite last summer s drought, due to the watering efforts of volunteers, particularly Jack Warren, Anne Reich, Jim Schoeller and David Stephens. Quite remarkable. Removal of most large buckthorn, black locust and other undesirables along Mill Stream ravine. The Village Center Task Force and our Mill Site Committee are coordinating the efforts around the Mill Site. Mark your calendars for the 40th Annual Marine Art Fair on September 21th and 22nd from 10am- 5pm each day. Proceeds benefit the Marine on St. Croix Public Safety Department. Applications are available on the Marine events website marineonstcroix.org or by calling the city office during business hours at FIRE PERMIT FEE The cost per permit is $5.00 for piles or $15.00 for a prescribed burn permit. Each permit is good for up to 3 consecutive days. You can contact the City office during regular business hours Monday thru Thursday to obtain a permit. Every year, citizens of Marine are invited to participate in the annual event. Participants spend an evening getting to know neighbors and friends while progressing from house to house to enjoy appetizers, soup/salad, and dinner courses. The entire group gathers for dessert at the Marine Village Hall. This tradition has become an important fundraiser for the Restoration Society and this year raised over $2, If you would like to get involved in the Restoration Society or volunteer for an event please contact: Jennifer Holloway at or Ann Myers Historical Walking Tour Maps The Marine Restoration Society in conjunction with the Parks and Trails Committee of the City of Marine have partnered to produce an Historical Walking Tour Map of Marine on St. Croix. The map is available at local businesses and at the City offices for $5. Proceeds from the sale of the map support the work of the Restoration Society, which promotes the cultural and historical awareness of the village. Summer is a great time to explore the neighborhoods of Marine. Each of the walks takes 45 minutes or less. We also have a limited supply of flat maps (not folded) suitable for framing. If you are interested in these please contact the City of Marine.
