2 Greetings From Your Chapter Directors Tom & Colleen FitzGerald GWRRA NC-A Piedmont Goldwings 2 Well the weather has been interesting for another month but at least we were able to get some riding in! Of course, I didn t realize I d hurt my left wrist as badly as I did in the fall down the stairs at the end of May so that s restricting my riding a bit. We had a couple of visitors from Tennessee join us at our beach house for several days this month and really enjoyed the visit of Jim and Bev Rambo, former Region N trainers. They got to see the Grand Strand even if it was through a torrential downpour on Friday, July 20, 2018! It won t be long before many of us will be heading to Knoxville for Wing Ding. I ve heard some negative comments about the Drill Teams not performing. Unfortunately there isn t an area large enough to accommodate the teams and spectators closer than 20 miles away. That s why the drill team exhibitions were cancelled. They promise to return in 2019 s Wing Ding. I hope all of you take time to read the District newsletter and the information on the drill teams in Roy s article. Wings Over the Smokies isn t too far away and I recommend everyone who hasn t registered, please do so. It s a great help to the District Team to have the members register early and remember, they re volunteers, just like your Chapter staff and all help is always appreciated. We ll be handling the grand prize tickets again this year and if you haven t signed up for a 2 hour shift yet, please do so at the next gathering or simply drop me an . This will make our jobs easier in putting the schedule together. Those working at WOS also get their shirts at ½ price so make sure you get your shirt size into Colleen at the next gathering. Until next month, ride often and ride safe. Tom & Colleen FitzGerald NC-A Chapter Directors
3 Greetings From Your Ride Coordinator Paula Hines GWRRA NC-A Piedmont Goldwings 3 We ve had hot, dry, then wet summer weather. Now I m looking forward to Fall, but still have to get through August and September, which both can be very warm. I don t handle the high temperatures very well, so most of my riding heads me to the mountains, where it is a bit cooler and more comfortable and more fun, with the beautiful scenery and curvy roads! When you hear the mountains calling you, please call me, too. I d love riding with some friendly company. Last month, I gave some good advice in the newsletter article, which I hope you remember: We will need to be alert to signs of heat exhaustion or even heat stroke in ourselves and our riding companions. Being well hydrated and maintaining electrolytes is important, as we sweat to cool ourselves. If you notice signs of overheating, you stop sweating, feel very hot, become confused, experience headache or nausea, stop in an area where you can get into the shade, get in air conditioning if possible, drink fluids (water, sports drinks with electrolytes) and use ice or cold water in towels to help cool down. I was teaching an MSF Basic Rider Course last weekend, requiring that I be out standing and walking on blacktop pavement for 7 to 8 hours Saturday and Sunday. In spite of what seemed like gallons of Gatorade and water, I was sweating so heavily, I became dehydrated and came very close to heat exhaustion. One of the nastier problems caused by this is severe muscle cramps, which means you don t get a lot of restful sleep. This makes the second day even more difficult, and Monday was recuperation day. Standing on blacktop can actually increase the temperature by 10 to 15 degrees, and believe me, you do feel it. At least on the motorcycle, you are moving and getting some breeze, which helps cool your body a bit. On the 18th of July, I headed up to Asheville and Maggie Valley for MSF Quality Assurance training and an instructor update. Received a lot of good information that will be valuable in training new riders and helping current riders increase their knowledge and skills. MSF is expanding their 3-wheel training, as there is rapidly increasing interest. There are a lot of riders who are transitioning to 3-wheels because of physical issues, strength, balance, and endurance, in order to continue riding safely. Recognizing good safety decisions for ourselves is a very important part of riding and enjoying the ride. I ll be heading to Robbinsville, staying at the Two Wheel Inn, to ride in that area for a couple of days August I will be checking out the motel facilities and hope to be able to recommend it for a future weekend Chapter ride. The really unusual feature about this motel is that each room has a garage for your bike! High hopes! Quote seen on FaceBook: If you re wasting time having fun, you re not wasting time! Quote attributed to Tom Ferriss don t know him, but he sounds pretty smart to me. I m waiting for a call, text or for the Impromptu Ride Pool to get out and ride. Larry and I have several potential rides laid out, so if you don t have one in mind, and just want to ride, we can help! There s so much to do in our area that we can enjoy within a half-day to a full day round-trip ride, the biggest problem is deciding which one to do first. If you have any questions or suggestions, we re definitely open to that as well. If I m going to be sitting, I d much rather be sitting on a motorcycle, going somewhere with friends! REMEMBER, WingDing 40 starting August 29 hope you plan to go, it s right next door to us in Knoxville, Tennessee, lots of good riding. And, of course, remember our Wings Over The Smokies, September 27-29, at the Haywood County Fairgrounds, 758 Crabtree Road, Waynesville, NC. Hope to see you there! Join us on our Friday dinner ride this month for an enjoyable social dinner. Watch for impromptu ride notifications - and see you at our gathering! Ride safely, ride often! Paula, Ride Coordinator
4 Greetings From Your MEC Alice & Ron Myers GWRRA NC-A Piedmont Goldwings 4 Hello Everyone, We have some new members WELCOME goes to Fran Bonkowski and Joe McCaffrey. Thank you for joining GWRRA and Chapter NC-A. For those that have motorcycle tickets, please be sure to bring the stubs and money or tickets not sold to our August Gathering. We would like to get everything turned in to Ms. Libby before Wings. Finally, after eight months of not riding (the motorcycle), we rode to Randleman and had pizza and back home. Man, it did a job on both of us. When not riding on a regular basis, you sure get out of shape. Hopefully, we will be on the road again, when it cools off. 11 Summer Highlight: Farmer s Day Festival in Robbins 11 One of the highlights of summer in Moore County is the annual Farmer's Day Festival held every August in downtown Robbins marks the festival s 63 rd year ( ). The Southeast Tourism Society recently named the Farmer's Day festival one of its Top 20 Events in the southeastern U.S. for August The Southeast region includes West Virginia to Louisiana. The best events across the Southeast compete to receive the prestigious Top 20 Events designation. Through a nomination process, Southeast Tourism Society chooses the Top 20 events for each month of the year and publishes this list of winners quarterly. These events are important to the economic vitality of our communities and this is a way for us to acknowledge the time and resources organizers have tirelessly spent to create memories for their attendees, said Bill Hardman, president and CEO of the Southeast Tourism Society. This year s three-day Farmer s Day starts at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 2 and lasts until midnight on Saturday, August 4. The event typically draws more than 30,000 festival-goers to Robbins, a significant influx for a town with a population of about 1,500. Founded in 1955 as an agriculture-themed parade, the event has grown to a weekend-long celebration featuring live entertainment, food & craft vendors and other attractions. There will be a 5K run/walk, a Fire Fighter Challenge, a Lumberjack competition, and an antique tractor & farm equipment show. The festival includes a lineup of 14 bluegrass, gospel and classic rock acts from across North Carolina. Carnival rides will be available for the kids. But the true centerpiece of the festival is the unique parade on Saturday, August 4 th at 11:00 a.m. Don t expect to see any floats or pageant queens though. Instead, this parade is full of horses, mules, donkeys, and maybe even a fowl or two. The parade has grown significantly from the sixty-five participants in the 1958 festival. Jarius Garner, chairman of the Farmers Day committee, said an average of 400 horse-drawn carriages and other entries participate each year. Farmer's Day is a great opportunity for residents and visitors to celebrate local agriculture and this area's rich history. It will be a great day for the entire family!
