August 2015 President's Message July was another busy month to be a Meadowlark! Four Meadowlark couples completed a mile trip to Door County, Wisconsin and back in their Model As. It sounds like it was a fantastic trip as they visited a lot of interesting sites. If you haven't had a chance yet, check out their trip blog on our web site. A few of us ventured to Syracuse for Germanfest for their parade, show and shine, and other activities including the always popular Viener Dog Races. Unfortunately, my radiator and my fan got a little too wellacquainted with each other on the return trip. Fourteen Model As drove in the Gretna Parade, and enjoyed lunch and good company at the McKinney s afterwards. Thanks to Mary and Bob for hosting us again this year. Finally, I had the privilege of driving my 1929 station wagon out to Kearney for the arrival of my new granddaughter, Amelia Leigh Nelson, born on July 4th. I even took her for a short Model A ride when she was just three days old. Someday when she is all grown up, she will be able to truthfully say that she doesn't remember her first ride in a Model A! August will be another busy month, with the Hanshaws leading a group to Greenfield, Iowa on August 5th, and the Cahalanes hosting our annual club picnic on August 29th. On August 16th, we are co-hosting the annual Vintage Wheels at the Fort car show at Fort Omaha along with the Douglas County Historical Society. This is our second car show of the year and a major fund raiser as we will be providing all the concessions during this show. Barney Deden and his committee have worked hard to make this a memorable event. They have added several new features this year including vintage car rides for the public, kite flying, a brass band, Irish dancing, and a sideby-side 2015 vs 1915 car display, where kids (and grown-ups) can see first-hand just how much the automo- Meadowlark Model A Ford Club, Omaha, NE Contents: August Events Greenfield Tour Vintage Wheels at the Fort Club Picnic Events after August Past Events Door County Tour Boone IA Tour Gretna Parade Syracuse Germanfest Report on Cut-Away Engine Tech Tip Member News Ads bile has evolved in the last 100 years. Just as in our Gretna show in June, we need maximum participation from the entire club to ensure this show runs smoothly. Make sure you sign up on the list of volunteer positions, or talk to Barney about where your expertise can be used. Arrive early and bring your old car to display. It doesn t even have to be a Model A, as long as it s at least 50 years old. See you at Fort Omaha! Greg Bowden At the August meeting. Barney Deden will present a power point talk on Omaha s Autobiography which will also include some information on early car and truck related activities in the surrounding area. We won t be having the regular Tech Talk and Hen s Nest at this meeting. Meeting Treats Thanks to Linda Crisman and Anne Krueger for treats at the July meeting. August treats will be provided by Janet Graves and Melody Grigsby. WE NEED TREAT VOLUNTEERS FOR SEPT. & OCT. 1

No eat for August because of the picnic. Hope to see everyone there. September eat out will be at Parker s on 73 rd and Pacific. They are supposed to have great ribs. The August Board Meeting will be held at the Fort Omaha Campus after the Vintage Wheels Show bring your chairs. Greenfield Iowa Tour August 5-7 History...Patriotism...Old Cars & Planes..."The Duke"..."Here's Johnny"...Good Friends and Good Food! You can experience all of these on the trip to Greenfield. There is still room for anyone with their Model A or their modern car. If you are interested in joining the group, please call Gayle and Nancy Hanshaw at The plan is to meet at the Cenex/ Lakeside Country Store at 4040 S. Expressway in Council Bluffs (the intersection of the South Expressway and the South Omaha Bridge Road- HWY92) to leave at 9AM on the 5th. If you can t go, you can follow along via the tour blog, Hens Nest We finished cutting out the vests. I want to thank everyone that help with this. It was a big undertaking. Just remember we would like to have them all sewed so we can give them to Mr. Chase by the September meeting. He would like to get them together so he can do them all at once. He is charging $12.00 to put on the logo. Also remember to put a pin in the back where you want him to start the logo. He will start 6inches done from the top of the logo this is where you need to put the pin. If you have any questions just call me I don t have anything planned for August because Barney is giving a talk at the meeting. Hope to see you all then. Anne Quick Tech Tip: LICENSE PLATES AND OTHER RADIATOR OBSTRUCTIONS -- The headlight bar seems like the ideal place to mount the license plate, but the plate does block about 30% of the radiator s cooling fin area. A radiator ornament or plaque will do the same thing. During the summer, consider removing the ornaments and flipping the license plate into the horizontal positon to expose more fins to the airstream. Better yet, wire the license plate to the front bumper for those long summer tours. From the July 2015 Quail Call, the newsletter of the San Diego Model A Club, where Arlyn Bieber, a former Meadowlark, is the Technical Editor this year. 2

AUGUST Events VINTAGE WHEELS AT THE FORT SUNDAY, AUGUST 16 10:00 AM TO 3:00 PM Preparations continue for the 4 th Vintage Wheels event and we expect this to be the best. The Community College has given us permission to block off more of the upper road than in past years so the fort will be an even better venue for the show. Please plan to bring your car and pass the word to all your vintage car friends to bring theirs. Spread the word to others to come to see the cars and to enjoy the other events at beautiful Fort Omaha. We have many events planned for the public to make this more than a car show and hope to have many more visitors than in past years. A food committee has finalized the menu and is looking for more volunteers to help cook and serve. Pork chops, sloppy joes, hot dogs, chips and drinks will be furnished. We would like donations of desserts in the form of individually wrapped servings of cookies, brownies, etc. Please do not include soft, sticky frostings or fillings or brownies, etc. which melt easily. We will also need help to set up tables, tents, PA system, and traffic controls, etc. Set up can take considerable time. Cars will probably start to arrive soon after 9:00 so we would like to begin preparing for them by 8:00. You can also help register vehicles, direct traffic and park cars, etc. Of course cleaning up and taking all these things down also requires many helping hands. If you don t know what to do simply sign up to help wherever needed! Meadowlarks have always pitched in and this has always made club events run smoothly and successfully. Your participation can help to make this another great event. Don t forget to bring your folding chairs and avoid sitting at the picnic tables except when you are a paying customer. Barney Deden Meadowlark Summer Picnic Saturday, August 29 Our club picnic will be at Mike and Marilyn Cahalane's acreage west of Plattsmouth. The club will supply the chicken. Everyone please bring a side or dessert. Drinks provided by the club will be iced tea and water. If you want something else to drink, please bring it. Also bring lawn chairs, if possible. Be sure and sign up. Anne Krueger The Cahalane s address is 6506 Mynard Rd., Plattsmouth. Here are Mike s directions: Via HWY 50: Take HWY 50 south to Louisville then east on HWY 66 towards Plattsmouth for about 6 miles. Turn Right (South) on 72 nd St. go 2 miles. Then, turn left (west) on Mynard Rd our house is the second driveway on the left at top of hill. About a half mile. Via HWY 75: Take HWY 75 south to Plattsmouth then turn right (west) on HWY 66 towards Louisville for about 6 miles. Turn Left (south) on 60 th St. Go two miles to stop sign turn right (west) on Mynard Rd. Our house is the first house on the right at the top of the hill. About a half a mile. Mike s A will be parked at the end of the driveway. If you need to call, the Cahalane s numbers are: Home Cell

Preview of Events coming up after August GRANDPARENTS DAY SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 Plan to join other Meadowlark Model A club members and friends from the Centennial Model T club on September 13 th while we show our cars to the residents of the Golden Living Care facility at 5505 Grover Street. It is logical to assume that many of the residents are grandparents and we can help them and all the residents, families and guests celebrate their day. The Director of Activities is planning activities for everyone and will have lunch for all. Plan to meet at Barney Deden s shop at 3301 South 66 th Avenue Circle any time after 1:00. From 60 th and Grover drive west to 66 th Avenue Circle, then north 1 block to From 72 nd and Grover drive east to 66 th Avenue Circle, and then go north to Have a cold soda there and visit with friends and we will drive together to Golden Hours a few blocks away at 2:00. Be sure to sign up so we can reserve parking spaces. Barney Deden INTERNATIONAL MODEL A DAY SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 Plans have progressed for an outing on Model A day at the Arbor Lodge in Nebraska City. The Lodge Coordinator is very enthused by our involvement in their festivities and has made arrangements for us to park our cars on the brick circle directly in front of the entrance to the Morton Mansion. This could be the very most impressive location anywhere for a Model A Day picture. We will be joined by members of the Cornhusker Model A club from Lincoln and possibly by a few cars from the Centennial Model T club. This is a 50 mile drive from Omaha and requires an early start because we are expected to arrive at the mansion at 8:30 AM. We plan to meet at a high school parking lot very near the mansion and drive onto the property as a group. Lunch will be available and we will leave the mansion around 2:00. Details will be provided in September. Barney Deden Eagles, Tractors, and Fords of Pottawattamie County Sunday, October 4th We will be touring to Griswold, Iowa to look at a couple antique tractor and farm equipment museums, as well as a private collection of Fords, including tractors, cars and trucks. This link is from a news article that talks about Griswold s various museums. On the way, we will make a couple short stops to view two of artist Russell Christensen s bronze Eagle statues, created as part of his "Eagles of Honor" project to place a large eagle in each Pottawattamie County community to honor of our nation's veterans. See Greg Bowden News about the Cut-Away Engine While in Kearney area recently I stopped by the Classic Car Collection to look at the cars and check our Model A cutaway engine. The engine is displayed very nicely, without a speck of dust on it. The museum staff told me that it gets a lot of positive comments from visitors. The collection of cars and related automobilia is fabulous, and definitely worth going through. Greg Bowden 4

Door County Trip July 4-12 On July 4, Ed & Sue Dellinger, Charlie & Suzanne Earnest, Don & Janet Graves, and Bob & Mary McKinney took off for a 1600 mile trip. On our way to Door County, we visited the Wisconsin Automotive Museum in Hartford, WI. We saw this 1931 Special Deluxe Pickup that was one of five made for General Electric to promote their compressor top refrigerators in We also visited the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, WI. Some of us toured the USS Cobia, a submarine that fought in World War II. Once we got to Door County, we saw lots of beautiful water views of Lake Michigan and Green Bay. We visited a couple of lighthouses. We enjoyed plenty of good food. We ate breakfast Al Johnson s Swedish Restaurant at Sister Bay, WI. In addition, to great Swedish pancakes and lingonberry jam, we saw the goats on the roof. We ate dinner at a Fish Boil, another Door County tradition in which they cook the fish outside over a fire. Of course, there was plenty of cherry pie, but we were a little early for this year s cherry crop. We had plenty of time to relax and enjoy a glass of wine together. On the way home, we visited the Experimental Aircraft Museum in Oshkosh, WI. 5

Past Events The Meadowlarks and Rust and Smoke Tour to Boone, Iowa John and Kristy Leddy led a tour to Boone, IA in June. Dale Jergensen made the trip as well as members of the Rust and Smoke Car Club. You can read John s full story at These are some of the many places they visited: Coca-Cola Center and Museum in Atlantic, Iowa where they saw a lot of Coke memorabilia and even were given a Coke for the road. Guthrie County Historical Village, where they saw a really cool old town set up complete with depot, drug store, and log cabin. They even saw a factory made tractor with a Model A engine in it. Kate Shelley Depot, Hickory Grove school, and Battin Chapel. Kate Shelley High Trestle Memorial Bridge, the highest, longest double trestle bridge in the world. Ledges State Park, where they took off their shoes and socks and waded in ankle deep water Madrid Bridge, which is the tallest and longest walking bridge Snus Hill Winery, where they admired the grounds and tested the wine Boone Historical Center, where they laughed a little as they saw old beepers, bag cell phones, and a 50s hair perm machine. John even saw one of my child hood computers, a Commodore 64, which he did not realize was an antique. A ride on the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad train over the High Trestle Bridge, which John said was a little scary but riveting at the same time because it was up much higher than the trees, and they could see for miles and miles Iowa State Campus, where Dale led the tour Mohr family Minneapolis Moline Collection, which contained about a hundred tractors, and a large collection of models and memorabilia John said that he learned that if you have a good, fun loving group of people to travel with, you will have a great trip, and it sounds like they did. 6

Member News Call Mary McKinney ( ) if you have any member news, good or bad, that you would like to share. It sounds like Don Noodell is recovering well from his major surgery. Our best wishes to Don for a quick recovery. We heard that Ray Crisman is having surgery this month. Positive thoughts to Ray! If you see Don Graves wearing a strange work boot, it is because of a case of tendonitis in his foot. It is supposed to be a short-term thing. We hope so! Thanks to the Heerens for hosting the club for fireworks and to the McKinneys for hosting us after the Gretna Parade. Those who attended really seemed to enjoy these events and, of course, the awesome food. 9 Syracuse Germanfest Three Model As made the trip to Syracuse on July 11th to take part in Germanfest Those driving in Model As were Dale Jergensen, Greg and Julia Bowden, and Jeff Graves with guests Jenny Wulff, Courtney Wulff, and Tony Coniglio. Besides watching the Kiddie Parade and the Grand Parade, we also got to see about 60 nice cars and trucks that turned out for their annual Show and Shine. A nice selection of food, free watermelon, lots of craft vendors, and the ever-popular "Veiner Dog" races made for an enjoyable and relaxing day in Syracuse.
