This year promises to be another interesting year as our club continues to evolve. Our membership continues to grow and the Marine base will soon be auctioned off by the Navy. In an effort to increase tournament attendance, we have reduced our public tournament schedule to four events per year. Likewise, in order to increase work party attendance, we will have only four non-tournament work parties this year. We have also changed our work party credit policies and dues structure to encourage attendance. On another note, we now have 50th Anniversary T- shirts available. Please be sure to check them out at the next work party. The price is $10 each. So, once again, Happy New Year here s to another 50 years of field archery! Happy New Year! See you at the range! Club Donation to Marine Fund El Toro Archers President Jason Conner and Public Relations Officer Harry Parmer recently presented a check for $1,000 to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund. The donation, which includes the proceeds of the Witch Hunt Charity 3-D, was presented to Fund Treasurer Liz Quist at the Camp Pendleton Marine Base. The fund helps the families of injured Marines with travel and living expenses so that they can be with their loved ones during their recovery. As you may know, this year renewal dues will be reduced by $20 for each work party you attended in 2004, down to a minimum of ZERO! What a deal! We will also hold the Club Championship, Club Banquet, and perhaps other events for club members only. As usual, there will be a work party the day before each shoot. 5 El Toro Archers Newsletter Page 5 Board Minutes The October meeting of the El Toro Archers board of directors was called to order by President Jason Conner, with Darell Freeman, Sherri Schamel, Ron Benjamin, Marla Yoshida, Harry Parmer, Sherry Martin, and William Figueroa also present. Range Relocation Update - Discussed various updates on the leading relocation options. Field Range Maintenance - Field course has been renumbered and shooting stakes have been re-marked, many thanks to Charlie Layne. Sherry Martin is ordering a new set of paper field targets (10 of each size). Broadhead Range - Decided that it still needs to be moved upstream. We will do so at the next available maintenance work party. Club Charter and Field Range Certification - Marc Urias is updating both so they reflect the same date. 50th Anniversary Memorabilia - No progress on stickers, buttons, and refrigerator magnets. Decided to order T-shirts as follows: Color = First choice is Hunter green or forest green (dark green). Second choice is navy blue. Pricing: One-time setup fee = $125; per shirt cost = $10. William Figueroa will place the order and coordinate payment with Darell Freeman. Turnaround time is two weeks from placement of order. Witch Hunt 3D Prep-Course layout, map, scorecards, and scoresheets are being produced by Ron Benjamin and Sherri Schamel. Darell Freeman will not be able to attend. He will transfer the cash box to Harry Parmer. Remember to place two ice chests at remote locations, like Shaw Canyon or Nichols Canyon. 5 The November meeting of the El Toro Archers board of directors was called to order by President Jason Conner, with Marc Urias, Eric Hoffman, Sherri Schamel, Ron Benjamin, and Marla Yoshida also present. Tax Filing Update - Filed Restated Articles of Incorporation to support re-filing with the Franchise Tax Board Relocation of Broadhead Range - Eric Hoffman will scout out a new location upstream from its current location. Club Charter and Field Range Certification - Club Charter expires July 31, Field Range Certification expires April The 3D ( Bowhunter ) course needs to be recertified; Ron and Sherri will send the supercourse information to Marc so he can send it in. Charity Check Delivered - Harry and Jason delivered a $1,000 check to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund last week at Camp Pendleton. Fall Hunt 3D Prep - Will use Shaw Canyon and the Upper Range. William will contact Ron to discuss transition of RTournament Chair duties. Advice from the Bard on Finding Lost Arrows Was Shakespeare an archer? He certainly used archery imagery in his plays. In these lines from The Merchant of Venice, a character tells how he found a lost arrow by shooting another arrow after the lost one: In my schooldays, when I had lost one shaft, I shot his fellow of the self-same flight The self-same way with more advised watch, To find the other forth; and by adventuring both I oft found both.

Roland Fraterrigo: (949) The copper weathervane on top of the Grange Hall in the village of Gilbertsville, New York, is an impressive sight. Standing almost five feet tall, it depicts an Indian in a feather headdress with a bow at full draw and a quiver full of arrows. The weathervane was erected in 1902, when the building was Gilbertsville s town hall, and soon became known affectionately as Uncas after the noble Indian character in James Fennimore Cooper s novel The Last of the Mohicans. But Uncas is not what he seems. He s a fake. In 2003, the original Uncas was spotted by Ray Egan, a weathervane collector from New York City, who offered the Grange $200,000 for it. To sweeten the deal, Egan offered to have an exact replica built and installed at a cost of $12,000. After considerable debate, the Grange decided to sell. After all, they could use the cash to maintain their aging hall and carry out charitable activities, and now that they realized the value of the weathervane, they couldn t really afford to insure it at a cost of $3,000 per year. Many citizens of Gilbertsville were outraged at the sale. A group called Friends of Uncas was formed, and the town sued to recover the weathervane, arguing that it rightfully belonged to the town, not the Grange. But things are not looking good for Uncas; the New York Supreme Court recently dismissed the suit. The real Uncas remains in Egan s collection, and the fake stands proudly atop the Grange Hall. So the hard feelings continue. I don t call it Uncas; I call it Buncas, grumbles one Friends of Uncas member. But the last laugh may be on the Grange; one recent appraisal puts Uncas real value at almost $900,000. Marla Yoshida
