2 Bits from Beth Foods that are at high-risk for containing e-coli According to Foodsafety.gov, e-coli is a very dangerous bacteria that can attack the red blood cells in humans, resulting in severe illness, bloody diarrhea, and potential kidney failure. Most e-coli infections are a result of consuming contaminated food. Here are some of the leading food sources that contain e-coli: 1. Ground Meat (beef, sausage, chicken, pork, or turkey) cook to an internal temperature of 160 o F 2. Unpasteurized milk only consume pasteurized milk 3. Unpasteurized juice only consume pasteurized juice 4. Fresh produce wash produce well by running under cold, running water for a minimum of 2 minutes 5. Contaminated water drinking untreated water and swimming in contaminated water 6. Soft cheeses both locally produced and imported 7. Sprouts alfalfa sprouts are especially bad Do not consume these unless they are cooked As you may have heard from the news, e-coli is very serious and it is easy enough to avoid by taking a few simple steps. Hoping everyone has a healthy 2016! Beth &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& News Blog from Sue Hatfield The weather is turning cooler as you know. The trees will be changing colors and you know what that means WINTER YUCK!!!! Can't change the weather unless I want to move to a warmer climate, so I will have to deal with it. I have my puzzles to do, quilting and other projects lined up to do when it is snowing. I hope you are preparing too. Preparation is everything. I am looking forward to the Branson trip with the Treblemakers. This should be a fun time. Thanksgiving and Holiday Fest are fast approaching and I pray I'm ready for that. We should all be thankful that the political drama will be over. Then we can get on to more pleasant things like COOKIES. Hope you have your recipes picked out. I passed out flyers to all the surrounding counties at District Day advertising our Holiday Fest. Well, I better close for now with this bit of history. In 2005 the rotary cutter celebrated its twenty-fifth birthday. Fact from The Quilt of Hope devotional by Mary Tatem Sue 2
3 HOMEMAKERS SPOTLIGHT: submitted by Regina Hawkins The group of ladies that we are spotlighting this month are all members of the County Chorus. They all started with the Chorus at about the same time and have always done a tremendous job. Our County Chorus takes part in so many ways in our state, county and local level at State Conference, at Achievement Day, at District meetings and so much more. They are also heading to Branson to put on a show know they will have a wonderful time. We are so fortunate to have such a strong Chorus in our county! Annetta Gregory over 14 years Rachel McKenney over 15 years Virginia Patch over 15 years Martha Rodgers over 15 years Cindy Shelton over 11 years Wanda Vandeventer over 15 years Miriam Rich over 15 years and is the leader of the gang! We have already spotlighted Helene Reyburn (23 years) and Donna Lawson (49 years) and we will also spotlight all the newer members. Thanks for each and every one of you for your dedication to Hendricks County Extension Homemakers. POLLYANNA HOMEMAKERS The Pollyanna Homemakers took a day and traveled to southern Indiana to tour Rob's Secret Garden. We enjoyed a personal tour by owner Rob as he explained how he, almost single handedly, planned and built several floral areas in a beautiful wooded lakeside setting. On the way home, we enjoyed a wonderful buffet lunch at Chamber's in Spencer. Earlier in the year some of our members enjoyed the annual Farm Women Seminar at the Beef House in Covington. Submitted by Wanda Vandeventer MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY Thanks go out to the members of the Hazelwood Club who made puppy pillows and neck pillows at their June meeting. On August 18, Hendricks County Extension Homemakers donated 21 neck pillows; 6 tote bags, and 23 puppy pillows to Riley Cheer Guild. Kudos to the clubs who prepared fabrics for puppy pillows, neck pillows, quilts, and baby hats and to the clubs that donated poly fiberfill for Make a Difference Day on September 8. We had 15 women show up at the Hendricks County Conference Center. Seven ladies came armed with their sewing machines, while others were prepared to stuff or hand sew the opening of the puppy pillows. We were able to take 168 puppy pillows, 29 knitted baby hats, and 4 quilts and 3 small rectangular pillows to Riley Cheer Guild on September 29. Reminders: Please tag your donations with a dollar value and volunteer hours donated to make the items. This information is needed for the reports that must accompany our handmade goods to the Riley Cheer Guild. Be sure to mark your calendars for March 9, 2017 for our spring Make a Difference Day. Hope to see you there. Submitted by Melissa Mikesell, Volunteer Community Support Chair 3
4 INDIANAPOLIS DISTRICT RETREAT The Indianapolis District Fall Retreat, September 13 and 14, had a theme based on the state s Bicentennial. The cook at Waycross Conference Center delights in making our meals go with the theme. She had food from Indiana like pork loin roast. She had blueberry muffins for breakfast just because they were yellow and blue. At one meal we had avocado salad - see the recipe below. Our classes were interesting and fun, and mostly crafts. We had a speaker from the state Bicentennial Committee who was very interesting and informative. Fall Retreat is a two day getaway from phones, TVs and a relaxing time to enjoy our homemaker friendships. Everyone should try it at least once. MANDARIN ORANGE & AVOCADO SALAD Dressing: ½ c. vegetable oil 2 tsp. minced onion ¼ c. vinegar ½ tsp. salt ½ c. sugar dash paprika Six hours or more before serving, put all ingredients into a blender. Blend well and refrigerate. Just before serving, blend again c. bib and leaf lettuce, torn into pieces 1 avocado, peeled, sliced and tossed 1 (11 oz.) can mandarin oranges, drained lightly in lemon juice 1 (3 oz.) can French-fried onion rings In a large salad bowl, combine lettuce, mandarin oranges, avocado slices, and onion rings. Toss lightly with dressing and serve. This is especially nice with chicken. Serve BRANSON BOUND---BRANSON BOUND! Wow! What a trip! The Hendricks County Treblemakers and their travel companions left early Monday morning for Branson, MO. After arriving at the Radisson Hotel and a quick trip to our rooms, we boarded the bus and went to the Wildwood Bistro Combo for our first of several delicious meals. From there we were at the King s Castle Theater to hear Dublin s Irish Tenors and Celtic Ladies. Boy could those men and ladies really sing! This was a great show and when the host was recognizing the groups present, he asked our Treblemakers to sing something! They did and received an invitation to come back on Thursday morning as the warmup act for this show! What an honor---to be so good that you are asked on the spot to come and do a pre-show! On Tuesday morning we attended the Brett Family Show at Dick Clark s American Bandstand Theater. Three men and two ladies from the same family who are very talented entertained us. They are a great family show with audience interaction included. This was certainly a treat. Tuesday was free time until dinner. Many went exploring at the Landing and the Historic Downtown mainly for lunch and shopping. Dinner was at the Uptown 50 s Diner that still looks very 50 s inside and out! We were entertained during dinner by Cody Dooley, who did 50 s songs in the voice of the original singer. He was smooth and easy to enjoy. From the Uptown Diner we departed for the Sight and Sound Theater! This was the Treblemakers first preshow performance. (They were great), then we saw MOSES. Now, if you ever get the opportunity to attend the Sight and Sound---DO IT!!! What a production!!! And when the camels, horses, goats and or sheep come running down the center aisle, it is almost unbelievable! Moses staff turns into the serpent, the 10 Commandants are written on stone and WOW, the Red Sea parted!!! Hard to describe but just spectacular! 4
5 Wednesday we had a good tour of the Branson area. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and told us lots of history and stories of the area. We toured the main building and a church at College of the Ozarks. This is a university where all students work and at the end of four years graduate with a degree, experience and no debt. The buildings have been built by students, the craftsmanship is unsurpassed. The main building is built in the style of the great resorts of the west in the time period. Taneycomo Lake, now isn t that a good Indian name? Try Taney county Missouri (mo) instead! One main highway, US 76, goes thru Branson and all other roads make loops from that road back to it. It is hard to get lost in Branson because of this system. Our evening meal was at Pasghetti s and once again, great food. The evening show was Clay Cooper s Country Music Express. This was a fast moving, audience participation show. Lots of country songs and great comedy. I have a DVD of this show that includes the Treblemakers performance as well as interaction of some of our travel mates with Clay Cooper. Thursday until about 2 p.m. was free time for those who hadn t visited the historic downtown except the Treblemakers who went back to the Brett Family Show to do their preshow program. Many others went on the Branson Scenic Railway train ride through the country side around Branson. The guide shared many stories of the area and pointed out things of interest. That evening dinner was at the McFarlain s Restaurant for more delicious food. The show Thursday evening included the Treblemakers preshow at the Dutton Theater. The Dutton Family Show was outstanding. There are 7 siblings, 5 of whom are in the show along with several of their children and their parents. This is a stringed instrument group and they played all of the stringed instruments you can think to name. It was quite an experience seeing them in a line playing the violin held by the person on their left! This is where we met Julio. He was funny, played in-tune bicycle horns and you could recognize the tunes! Their parents also played in some of the numbers. If you miss them in Branson, go to Mesa, AZ for their winter shows. After the show, we went next door for an ice cream social with the family members. It was extra nice to get to meet and talk with the family. After one more large breakfast buffet at the Radisson Hotel, we boarded the bus and headed home. Back home again in Indiana, to family and friends, tired, stuffed from a week of eating great food and having fun. A special thank you to the Treblemakers for opening the bus to us, for the tour guide, Robert Lane and his wife and to our bus driver, Dan Morehouse! How many times did he tell us it is time to get off The Dan Bus!!! We had fun and enjoyed it all. Sharon Fruits, October 2016 BRANSON BOUND CONTINUED: The chorus has just returned from Branson. Wow!!! What a wonderful trip! We took a full bus of 56 which included 16 performers plus friends and family including several Extension Homemakers. We were entertained by the Irish Tenors and Celtic Ladies after a long bus trip and a delicious dinner. The Chorus performed for, and everyone attended, shows by the Brett Family, Moses at Sight and Sound, the Duttons and Clay Cooper. The last three were on our schedule and the Brett show was added after they asked us for a surprise song while attending their show and apparently liked what they heard. We were surprised by the large appreciative crowds for a pre-show and we felt like stars. Our accommodations were wonderful at the Radisson in the heart of Branson and our meals were delicious. We also had lunch with the Bretts and ice cream with the Duttons. Time was scheduled for shopping at downtown old Branson and at newer Branson Landing. Some took the scenic train ride into the mountains. Stops were enjoyed at Cracker Barrel and the Russell Stover outlet. Our tour directors, Robert and Kathy Lane, from Northwest Travel, had all the details covered and Dan, our bus driver, was a fun guy. Our choral director, Miriam Rich, did so much work making this trip such a success. Thank you so much for many who helped us financially or helped us fill the bus. We returned home about 8 on Friday, tired but exhilarated. Watch out Broadway, you may be next! Wanda Vandeventer 5
