4 Vol. 53 No. 6 Rock Rollers June 2013 Page 3 BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING: Saturday, June 22nd at 10:00 am. JUNE PROGRAM Mike Shaw At the June meeting, Bruce Hurley will talk about the history and geology of the former Nevada Test Site (NTS), now known as the Nevada National Security Site. Approximately one thousand above-ground and subsurface nuclear tests were conducted on the NTS from 1950 through 1992, and geology was the most important component of radiation containment for the final thirty years of the test program. HOSPITALITY Bonnie Agee member ill, etc.,?? Call Bonnie Agee REFRESHMENTS Kathleen Govett A big thanks to David Camargo, Aaron Wigant, Jim Rundlett and Kathleen Govett for the May 28th General Meeting refreshments. As usual, we were treated to a good feast. Tom & M.J. Brown, Cathy Reynolds, Vonnie Dillion, Mildred Scheel and Marian Knack have signed up to furnish refreshments for the June 25th General Meeting. Just a REMINDER - the annual picnic is July 2lst. We plan on eating around 12:00 pm. The club will furnish the hamburger and hot dogs (and the fixings) and ask members to bring side dishes and desserts. Cathy Reynolds is running bingo this year and has gathered up some new prizes. She is asking anyone with some games, i.e., croquet, badminton, etc., to bring for us to play. Don't forget to bring rocks to swap. Hopefully the maintenance crew won't wash the area down before we arrive this year! Hope to see y all there! CLASSES Mike Shaw The Don Norris classes (silversmithing, lost wax casting) have been cancelled due to poor attendance. The summer time is not the best time for classes. SHOP NEWS Mike Shaw Don't forget the big shop cleanup on Friday, June 21st at 3pm. We'll be working on the equipment, cleaning it, replacing the sandpaper, cleaning out the slabsaws, going through the shelves and boxing up the rocks for the silent auction at the show. As you've noticed, we're getting more crowded on shop nights and don't have time for the little things. It's time to take care of them. Wear old clothes! Shop Realities If the club keeps growing as it has been, we're going to have to have more room and more power to the equipment. We have more equipment available, but we need to start thinking about how to have more room. Also, the equipment can't stand up to any abuse. If you wouldn't do it to your several thousand dollar machine, don't do it in the shop! Work larger rocks on the 8" wheels, don't do anything but cabs on the Genies. Don't use the fine trimsaws for anything over 1/2" thick. There is a trimsaw for that and we'll show it to you if you're unsure of which one it is. Only use one slabsaw at a time, unless you check first to see if anyone else is interested in using it. If you aren't using any equipment, sign out at the front desk. If you come over at the end of the evening and say you only worked a short time, you'll be charged for the entire time unless you sign out. You can always sign back in. If you forget to sign in, you'll be charged for the entire evening. We're unable to keep track of each and every one in the shop. Time is charged in ½-hour increments.

FIELD TRIPS Mike Shaw photos by Tina Long The trip to Squaw Valley was a beautiful day to be out in the woods. It was cool and sunny up in the mountains, with lots of great people to share in the adventure. Enough crystals were found to show us they were there, but the mother lode eluded us. We all had fun, though, and it was a real treat for the kids to be allowed to get as muddy as they wanted!

6 Vol. 53 No. 6 Rock Rollers June 2013 Page 5 Emerald Creek Our next trip was to Emerald Creek in Idaho which rewarded us with some larger garnets this time. Ben Odum found a 3-ounce garnet, Dale Ruperd found a 2-ounce one and Vonnie Dillon found a partial one that weighed at least an ounce. It's going to be very interesting to see if there are stars inside. It was a warm sunny day, almost too warm. We all did well, though. Madras PowWow June Wednesday, 6/26 begins the big Madras PowWow, which is a huge gathering of rockhounds in Madras, Oregon. I've never been, but I've been to some of the places they go and the PowWow is on my bucket list of things to do. Some of the ranches they go to are only open during this trip. Here is information from their website: SUMMER EXTRAVANGANZA: June 26 - June 30, 2013, the Madras Pow-Wow Gem and Mineral Show is at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Madras, OR. Camp on a grassy field for a small fee. The grassy field has no hookups but water, showers and toilet facilities are close by. A sewage pumping truck will be available during the event and will pump holding tanks for a fee. The fairgrounds RV Park is adjacent to the event, has full hookups and is managed by the fairgrounds. The daily field trips (depart 8:00 am) to dig for agate, jasper, thunder eggs and petrified wood are on private ranches. There is a small fee for materials taken. Bring your rock hounding tools. Daily events include a rock toss for the kids, rock swapping for both kids and adults, free nightly entertainment starting at 7:30: movies with popcorn, bingo, door prizes or a great auction. Come visit the many dealers with everything from rough rock to finished jewelry and equipment to fill all your lapidary needs. Lolo Pass July Our trip to Lolo Pass for Smoky Quartz takes place on Saturday, July 13th and Sunday, July 14th. We'll meet at the Lolo Hot Spring Resort parking lot aross the street from the camping area at 9:00 am Mountain Time which is 8:00 am our time. You'll need to make reservations right away as RV sites are limited and the cabins may already be gone. The phone number for the campground is Lolo, MT, is about 1/2 an hour from the Resort and has many hotels. We've always found some smoky Quartz up there, but you have to shovel to find it. Lake Wenatchee July 27 We'll be going to Lake Wenatchee for Garnets on July 27th. These are different than the garnets found at Emerald Creek. They all will be almost perfectly shaped crystals. For those stretching their brains still, their shape is called a "rhombic dodecahedron". For those of us desperately trying to remember their own address like me, retention isn't required. Most are occluded (cloudy), but some are facet grade. I'm going to try panning, as there are literally thousands that slip through your screen that would be perfect for the treasure dig at our show. The basic tools needed are a shovel and a screen approximately 12 x 12 with 1/4 inch hardware cloth, similar to the ones at Emerald Creek. A box made of 2''x 2" s with a 1/4" screen bottom held on with thin strips of plywood is all it is. I'll bring one to the meeting so everyone can see it. Oregon Sunstones Sept Get prepared for the Oregon Sunstone trip to Pana Mines near Plush, OR, September 27th through the 30th. We'll camp near or on the Pana Mine property Friday the 27th and dig on Saturday. This will be a pay dig, with several ways of digging for different prices. The most expensive is $150 a day to stand at a screened table while they load sunstone bearing gravel for you to sort through. We'll stop on the way home Sunday to go to Glass Butte for obsidian and on to Hampton Butte for their colorful red and green petrified wood. We'll camp at Hampton Butte and continue home Monday.

7 Vol. 53 No. 6 Rock Rollers June 2013 Page 6 PANORAMA CLUB FIELD TRIPS Mike Shaw Rock Rollers joined the Panorama club for a May 29 trip to Blue Bird Mine near Loon Lake looking for azurite and malachite. photos by Jamie Dahlke A second trip was on Wednesday, June 5, to collect serpentine and pyrite at the Serpentine Mine near Chewelah. The remaining Panorama trips will be to Horseshoe Mountain (near Republic) for quartz and fluorite on Saturday, June 22; the Metaline Falls Quarry for trilobites on June 29; and a two-day trip to Idaho to the Clarkia Fossil Bowl for Tertiary plant fossils and Mica Mountain for pegmatite minerals on September 7-8. Additional information on these trips will be in upcoming issues of the Panorama Prospector newsletter. The June 29th trip will be lead by Bruce Hurley, the president of the Panorama Club in the Colville/Chewelah area and a member of Spokane Rock Rollers. He's very knowledgeable about trilobites and even can tell you what type of trilobites you're finding. You'll want to bring a hammer and cold chisel in order to split the shale they are found in. Also bring newspaper to wrap the shale pieces in, as they are rather soft and can be worn off the rock if they rub together. Meet at the North Division Rosauer s at 9:00 am near the Goodwill van. We ll join up with the Panorama club at the Tiger Store (Hwy 20 & Hwy 31) at 10:30 am. NFMS GEM & MINERALS SHOWS July Lower Umpqua Gem & Lap. Soc. Reedsport Comm. 9 CRATERS OF THE MOON NATIONAL MONUMENT in SE Idaho According to the sign, when it cooled, this lava tube shattered like pie crust and this lava tube collapsed like a soufflé. Spot the chipmunk (left photo) on the pahoehoe (ropy) lava formed when a thin skin of cool lava was shoved into folds by hot, more-fluid lava just below the surface.
